Frostfire is a sweet story of two sisters enjoying time together in a frozen garden covered in snow. The older sister, Miriam, is a self-proclaimed snow dragon expert and the younger sister, Celeste, asks lots of questions as they explore and play.
I loved reading this with my kids! With its absolutely breathtaking illustrations, it showcases the magic of winter.
The artwork is whimsical! I love the frost illustrations! Charming story about two siblings. I would add this to my collection of Winter books! Next time I see mounds of snow, I might just think twice, whether there is a dragon hiding beneath. This book makes me nostalgic of when I would play outside in the snow with my sister, make forts and, wait for snow fairies to come visit. This book makes snow feel even more magical
I was immediately drawn to this book by the bewitching title and exquisite artwork. We follow two sisters, Celeste and Miriam, on their garden adventure in the magical snow.
This story was the perfect length, with enchanting drawings and an adorable plot with charming sisters.
Such a joy to read I will definitely be looking out for this book to read with my daughter. I could see it being a winter favorite.

This book stimulates the imagination of young and old alike. The sisters are foxes out for a walk. Big Sis spins fabulous tales of snow dragons and declares that the decorative frost on the windowpanes is Frostfire from the dragon's breath. But it is Little Sis who meets the snow dragon before they go home.
The unusual illustrations by the author are more than simply creative and practically glitter off the page. Well suited for reading alone or WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school, or your public library!

A story of sisterhood, imagination. Celeste is going for a walk in the snow with her, sister, Miriam, and are met by a snow dragon. Miriam shares the story of the snow dragon with Celeste, making the walk home fun and productive. This was so sweet and delightful. I would read this and share it with other kids. The illustrations are perfect for the book and well done and creative.
Recommended.
Thanks netgalley for sending this e-book ARC for review.

This book is so magical. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the story is sweet and fun to follow. I desperately want to sit and watch the snow dragon drift by in the clouds with Celeste and Miriam.
A cute story that follows two fox sister on their walk through the woods as they look for a snow dragon. The beautiful illustrations are whimsical and representative of that feeling of walking in the woods on a snowy day.
The ending was a little underwhelming and abrupt. I am not sure if I would recommend it.
There are also some opportunities to talk about imagination, telling the truth, and fact checking!

A cozy winter tale of sibling adventures and imagination, depicted in Elly MacKay's gorgeous paper art. The anthropomorphized fox characters are expressive without being cartoonish, and the rural winter scenery is a glittering wonderland. For some reason I was a bit less enthralled by the text, which seems to shift from poetic language ("The garden blossomed with silvery frost") into more casual dialogue that somehow doesn't quite match the beauty of the artwork. On the other hand, it does a nice job of capturing the relationship between the "wise" older sibling and the trusting younger one, and I love how the story turns this dynamic on its head at the end.
I suspect many families will find themselves embracing snow dragon lore after reading this story - I know I'll never look at swirling frost patterns on windows the same way again! And some of the explanations for dragon behavior are truly brilliant, like the idea that you don't see dragon tracks in the snow because they prefer to fly instead of walk. Aside from a subtle wreath in the window, there are no references to specific winter holidays, making this a great choice for all families to celebrate the snowy season. This is definitely a book to be read curled up with a steaming cup of hot chocolate in hand!
A beautifully illustrated winter fairytale filled with soft illustrations that spark the imagination and make you want to wander out into the snow to search for snow dragons in your own kingdom or garden. This sweet book about two sisters will be even more magical to read during the winter.
Thank you, Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley, for this ARC of Frostfire written by Elly Mackay!
Elly Mackay creates some of the most beautiful artwork, and when I saw this book by her, I knew I had to read it! Her artwork is unique, creative, and breathtaking! If you have time, check out her site to see how she creates these beautiful art pieces.
This story is illustrated with paper diorama art, which is neat and cool to discuss with your students or children. This process takes lots of time and patience, which is an excellent lesson for students to learn when creating art. It is not about the product but the process of how you get there. I could see this book spark my students' creativity and inspire them to make their own paper diorama pieces and learn more about this process.
This is a beautifully told story about two fox sisters, Celeste and her older sister, Miriam. The story takes place in the winter woods, and the older sister, Miriam, uses words to describe a magical world in which Dragons roam throughout the winter. This book was well written and made you feel warm and comfortable inside, yet sparking a sense of adventure. I could see this book being a great story time read-aloud with my students and or when babysitting in the winter. You could come up with creative activities and discussions around this book.
Thank you again for this ARC! I look forward to purchasing this book for my school's library in October 2024!
The Picture Book “Frostfire” by Elly MacKay tells the story of Miriam and Celeste on their journey through a snowy landscape in search of a snow dragon.
This book was so sweet! I loved the cozy atmosphere and colors. The illustrations are so whimsical and full of magic! Even though the story is set in winter the color palette is still warm like sunlight on a frozen landscape.
I also really enjoyed the short story about the frost dragons and the curiosity of Miriam for the wonders of nature.
This just made me happy and I can't wait for the first snow this year!
A big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Penguin Random House Canada for giving me the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Frostfire was a delightful book. It tells the stories of sisters Celeste and Miriam (who are foxes) as Miriam explains what snow dragons are to Celeste while they wandered a beautiful winter landscape. I thought the illustrations were beautiful and I look forward to the day when I can hold It in my hands to see the illustrations more completely.
Elly MacKay’s books are always exquisitely well done and Frost Fire is no exception. MacKay creates these intricate and detailed illustrations through a series of layers, lighting and translucent paper, if you haven’t encountered one of her books, you should! Frostfire is about a little fox and her family who are enjoying the forest in winter. She is unsure whether to believe her older sister’s tales of a snow dragon, until she sees one with her own eyes. This enchanting story comes to life with the unique artwork which is beautiful to look at and will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The font is a tiny but small, but is fairly easy to read and is probably that size so as to not take away from the beautiful illustrations. I could definitely see myself reading this to my class, and this would make an excellent addition to my classroom library. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this beautiful book.
When two woodland fox sisters set out on a wintery snow walk, they discuss the possibility of encountering a snow dragon. When younger sister, Celeste, asks probing questions like what do dragons enjoy, her older sister immediately has the answer --- diamond dust, of course. But when Celeste's imagination and curiosity create an actual snow dragon, will it be everything she was expecting? This story is so charming and will be requested over and over as a winter-time favorite read.
An adorable winter children's book.
The ending leaves it open ended, leaving the kids to imagine what happened afterwards.
Foxes learning about snow dragons on a wintery walk through the woods.
A sweet sibling tale of two young foxes with vivid imaginations. Gorgeous artwork as usual from Elly MacKay. This will make a beautiful Christmas gift, perfect for fans of Frozen.
Frostfire is a must buy for the littles this winter. I read through it once myself and absolutely loved the story and especially the illustrations. A very classic, winter whimsy.
The second time I read Frostfire was with my 3 and 5 year olds. They also enjoyed it and had quite the debate over whether the snow dragon would be real. The 3 year old won!
Looking forward to this book's release and coming across some frostfire in the real world this winter.
Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books and NetGalley for the eARC!
This beautiful picture book was written and illustrated by an imaginative and talented illustrator. This creative story follows 2 hopeful, adventuresome sisters spending some time in the snow. They create a world of their own and develop a sense of self throughout their adventure. The illustrations are part whimsy and part soft and are all encompassing of the softness this sister story shares with the reader.
This is a perfect book for young adventurers. It will be on my purchasing list for my two young nieces to enjoy while cozied up on a snowy day.

Elly MacKay has done it again! Every book this author puts out is gorgeous. Frostfire is a tale of two foxes in the wintertime, while the older fox tells the younger a story about a mysterious snow dragon, whose breath leaves frostfire on the windows. The images simply glow. A perfect cozy book for winter, utterly charming.
These were beautiful illustrations , with great detail. Great concept as well — two sisters out playing — the older sister telling creative story to inform her younger sister why things are looking as they are — I loved the idea of snow dragons and their fire breath was the patterned frost— and like all legends same parts are true and some are not. Very magical story for wintertime.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada | Tundra Books for this ARC . This is my honest review.
