A beautiful and well-written book that immerses you in the landscape of China past and more recent, stretching back over the story of a family's joys and suffering from China to the US.

I didn’t finish this book it didn’t appeal to me, I didn’t enjoy the story, so this is one that I gave up on. It doesn’t happen very often, it it did this time.

This is a story of a Chinese/American family where the mother is forced into the position of having to tell her daughter the secrets of her life in China , before emigrating. Great in parts, pointless in others and seemed rather prolonged.

This book was a freebie with the Times a few years back; I’m afraid i found it unconvincing and didn’t get beyond the first couple of chapters. NOthing further to add

Wild Swans was a good introduction to this author's work. If you enjoy books with a Chinese theme this will really not disappoint. The compelling and contrasting story of a family and the different generations raised in different settings will delight readers, particularly the way the author reveals family secrets as part of the narrative. A special treat is the way in which humour is artfully used to add to the story.
