I absolutely adored The Night Shift for its honest, empathetic portrayal of a neurodivergent heroine. Violet isn’t shaped to fit an ideal; she’s real, complex, and deeply relatable. It’s refreshing to see a story where her neurodivergence isn’t something to “fix” but something that adds richness to every interaction and moment of growth.
Set in a hospital, the novel beautifully anchors Violet’s struggles in her professional environment and showcases both her fraught and then increasingly thoughtful interactions with nurses and patients to the nuanced rhythm of daily life. The micro-details were spot on and made everything feel immersive and authentic.
Gus, the love interest, deserves his own praise: he’s not just kind; he actively learns how to show up for Violet. He listens, he observes, and he meets her where she’s at, with understanding that feels earned rather than performative. Their emotional journey is subtle, tender, and affirming in every way.
The supporting characters shine too. They’re not there just to move the plot forward and they genuinely enrich Violet’s arc through moments that showcase the quiet power of empathy, especially in a clinical setting.
Heartfelt, grounded, and impossible to put down—this is a must-read for anyone craving romance with soul, substance, and stunning authenticity.

50% DNF'd

I had extremely high hopes for this one, but it's kind of a mess. Violet is described as honest, maybe too honest. She's klutzy and isn't sure if this is the right career for her. Gus seems to fall in love with Violet after first glance. It seems like his admiration for her goes from 0 to 100. There's too much medical talk - I didn't care to know details about the patients specific medical needs - some of which is TMI. The pacing is SLOW. I wanted to keep reading until the romance started, but I ran out of patience.

I really enjoyed this book. As a medical person myself I enjoyed how they talked about the medical field and I liked reading about differences between US and England. The main characters Gus and Violet were amazing. I really loved how different they were and how they helped each other be better and grow. Mr. Zellers really had my heart the whole time. Highly recommend

I always love reading a book that is a bit different. Two doctors working a night shift, we get to hear about the patients they see but also each others side of the story. Each chapter is either Violet or Gus, and we see how their stories intertwine. I loved the first half of this book, it was a compelling read and you could feel excitement for Violet in your bones. However I felt as though the second half was lack lustre and did not really go anywhere, it was a shame really as it had good potential. I liked both characters and I liked how it was set around the hospital but it really slowed down too much for me on the second half.

DNF @ 13% - for a romcom, this was extremely slow to start and lacked chemistry. I had to stop after the first several chapters with all the back and forth about medical issues with the patients and so little about the two main characters. I was hoping for a charming little romance similar to something like Yours Truly but I could not get into this one.

I don’t typically leave star ratings for books I DNF but Netgalley requires this so I’m giving it 2 stars.

The Night Shift is a romance between a young doctor, Violet and an anesthesiologist, Gus. Violet is in her first year of residency and is trying to find her groove while on the wards. She is very blunt and trying to find a way to improve her bedside manner and her relationships with her colleagues. Gus is a people pleaser and trying to find ways to be more honest.

Gus and Violet meet the week of Christmas and due to outside circumstances(and Gus's interest in Violet) they are thrown together and find comfort in each other during this time.

This was a fun read! Violet is a refreshing character and I loved reading her dialogue and the way she pushes herself to be her best as well as everyone around her--including Gus. This was also fun to read and interpret the different lingo between British hospitals and hospitals in the US. This book has a lot going on and all the moving pieces made it hard to put down.

I recommend this book if you like medical dramas and especially if you are also a BBC fan!

I struggled to get into this book until about the 43% mark where the story picked up. The beginning was slow, a lot of dialogue and heavy on medical terminology and situations. I also had a hard time connecting with Violet, which honestly makes sense for her character so well done there.

However the second half of this book really makes up for the first half’s pace. The plots start to come together and the characters have excellent growth. I was pleasantly surprised with it!

For anyone who may need it, flagging a TW for on page sexual harassment by senior colleague toward the tail end of the book.

A feel-good festive slow burn rom com, i thought there were a few slow/boring patches here not going to lie, but overall enjoyed. I liked the neurodivergent tropes covered in this book and thought they were done fairly well.

Fresh out of medical school, neurodivergent FMC Violet spends the book navigating her first week of night shifts—and struggling with confidence and connection. Charming MMC Dr. Gus Jovic brings the banter and their chemistry is well written, The hospital setting is a new one for me, not sure i have ready many of this type so I enjoyed reading of the pressures that I am sure are all to familiar with our own health care professionals.

⭐️ 3.5 stars ⭐️
This gorgeous book tells the story of Violet and Gus, a couple of doctors working the night shifts between Christmas and New Year. They're both on the run of shifts for their own particular reasons, which they learn about each other as the week progresses. There is so much to like about this book. I especially enjoyed Violet as a character, she was so straightforward. As someone who worked most of their career on the front line of the NHS, the ambiance of a hospital at night worked for me, as did the exchanges between the interdisciplinary team on shift.
I did feel like some of the chapter endings read as clunky and the pantomime villain surgeon character (though well cast in his profession) was maybe too loosely charaiactured.
"The Night Shift" will be a perfect Christmas read for anyone looking for something a little different to the usual (and sometimes supernatural) romantic fare at the festive time of year.

Absolutely loved it! Especially being a nurse, I felt right at home observing the romance between Gus and Violet and adored the bedside manners and the difficulties you can face as a medical professional. It had me laughing out loud, kicking my feet with joy and holding back tears. I loved the neurodivergent portrayal (as I am ND too)(and with Violet being undiagnosed) as well and the challenges it can cause, but also loved how Gus can show Violet how amazing her qualities are and that being different doesn't always mean something bad.

Thoroughly enjoyable read and loved the ending, and with Gus and Violet in such a short space of time, providing so much guidance and opportunities for healing for each other, that they both didn't realise they needed so badly.

(Also in love with Dev and Marv!)

I received a free copy of, The Night Shift, by Nancy Peach, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Junior Doc Violet, is working the night shift on her own over Christmas, and she is very anxious. I did not care for the characters, asking someone for underwear is gross. I would never want to be at the hospital that Violet and Gus work at.

I liked what this book set out to do— it had an interesting setting and unique main characters. For most of it, I liked the main characters and related to them in different ways. I think the story benefited from the dual POV.

That being said, the story overall moves slowly and is pretty heavy handed both in the dialogue and inner monologues. I was flagging by 50% and it lost me by 75%. It would have been 3 stars for me until then. I still finished it and there were some cute moments with the side characters towards the end, but overall I think I would have been able to enjoy this more if it was about 20% shorter.

This is such a cozy, feel good read! I really enjoyed the mix of humor, heart, and slowburn romance. Violet, our neurodivergent main character, is starting her first week of night shifts at the hospital. She's fresh out of medical school. She struggles with confidence and connecting with people, both collegues and patients.

Dr. Gus Jovic is a cool, calm, and way too charming for his own good. Their chemistry is super cute, and I loved how their relationship slowly grew over a string of night shifts. The banter was great, and I definitely laughed out loud a few times.

The hospital setting felt really real, and I appreciated how it didn’t shy away from the pressure and messiness of life in medicine. Also, major points for how thoughtfully Violet’s neurodivergence was portrayed.

The only reason I’m not giving it a full five stars is that the pacing dragged a little in places. But overall, this is a charming holiday romcom with heart, humor, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.

I’m not typically drawn to books or TV shows with a hospital setting (too squeamish!), but I absolutely loved the setting of ‘The Night Shift’. Brilliantly cosy and somewhat reminiscent of Sunday-night TV, you could tell that the author had done her research here, in a way that felt authentic without being overbearing. I loved it!
Similarly, you could also see how much effort the author had gone to in painting an accurate representation of neurodiversity, and I loved to see that in Violet. It was so refreshing within the genre, and I hope we see more of it in the future!
The romance was beautifully done, as was the emotional journeys that the characters went on, both separately and together. Overall this was such a joy to read, and I can’t wait to see what Nancy Peach does next!

I’ve read two other books from Nancy Peach and rated them 4 stars. I’m not sure where this one derailed for me. The characters seemed a bit flat and the love story was just meh. This book felt rushed. I almost DNF as it was a slog to get through.

Working in a non-clinical position within the NHS, I found The Night Shift to be a genuinely touching and uplifting read that shines a light on the emotional realities faced by healthcare professionals.
Nancy Peach crafts a heartfelt and thoughtful narrative focused on Violet, a junior doctor embarking on her first night shifts. Right from the beginning, she’s thrown into challenging situations — from difficult patients to the constant presence of the charming and much-loved Dr Handsome.
What really stood out to me was the authentic neurodivergent representation. Violet isn’t your typical romantic lead — she’s not bubbly or stereotypically “flawless.”
Experiencing the story through the lens of a neurodivergent character was both fascinating and validating. I’m thrilled to see more stories like this where such perspectives take the spotlight.
Violet comes across as introspective, distinctive, and wonderfully relatable.
Following her emotional journey as she copes with the complexities of patient care, the demands of her job, and her own personal growth was both powerful and eye-opening — especially as she interprets and responds to the world in her own way.
Gus, the romantic lead, is kind and understanding. I loved that he embraced Violet for exactly who she is, without trying to change or “fix” her.
Their relationship felt authentic, tender, and refreshingly grown-up. Some may say the romance develops quickly, but I connected with that — my husband and I had a whirlwind romance too, and we’re still going strong after 11 years.
The festive backdrop brought a cosy, heartwarming feel to the book, but didn’t overshadow the deeper themes.
I also admired the realistic depiction of life in a hospital, particularly how the needs of real patients often go far beyond what textbooks prepare you for.
One of the novel’s biggest strengths was the depth of character development — not only for Violet, but for many of the secondary characters. Seeing them grow and evolve throughout the story added real richness.
Overall, this was a charming, sincere, and often funny read that left a lasting impression. I’m already excited to see what Nancy Peach writes next.

Violet is starting her first week of nights in the clinic and petrified. Dr Gus in calm and popular and signs up to work the night shift before christmas as well... Both work together and discover new things about each other.

Lots of fun and wit. Love Violet and Gus together. Their interactions are lots of sassy and romantic. Really enjoy it.

I DNF'd this one. The FMC was a little too much for me. I really hoped she would grow on me, but she didn't. I read 35% of this book and found myself falling asleep and rolling my eyes. I will not leave a review on Goodreads because I hate leaving negative reviews.

Thank you for the ARC!
