The word that comes to mind for this book is self-indulgent. I went into it suspending all rational belief and allowed myself to be swept away by the drama of your long-time actor crush turning up in your rural hometown because he thinks he's turning into a werewolf.
This was definitely not so much of a cutesy romcom since both our protagonists carried pretty heavy burdens and/or grudges for a major part of the storyline, but I did find them both loveable in a "difficult exterior but soft-hearted" kind of way, although I will admit that the hollywood celebrity sleaziness kind of vibe didn't really do it for me with ou MMC.
This is my second Rosie Danan book and have enjoyed both, so will def be picking up more in future

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a very quick, easy read.

The characters aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, and both were quite childish, but it ended up making sense in the context of what had happened in their lives up until the events of the book.

I also thought the ways that text messages and wiki pages were incorporated into the book was really well done, and added another level of information in an interesting way.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I’ll definitely continue picking up Rosie’s books 😊

This was just really weird 😂 I really wanted to like it, I’ve loved this author’s romance books in the past but I just don’t think her paranormal/fantasy books are for me. The story felt quite slow and dragged out in parts, and I found it really hard to connect to the characters (I think this would’ve been a lot better in first person rather than third?). Some of the scenes between the two characters were sweet but then you would be reminded of the fact that he’s a werewolf and it was just a bit too silly for me…

Devin's career is flailing after spending his best years playing a werewolf on a long running TV show, The Arcane Files. But when he wakes up one morning after becoming a werewolf himself, his focus shifts to getting help from Alex, an expert on all things TAF and his only hope when it comes to understanding what is happening to him.

This was a pretty light and easy supernatural romance, although the characters had their flaws and we're not my favourite. The plot was good though and I did adore some of the side characters!

Fan Service by Rosie Danan is a hilarious, paranormal romcom with plenty of bite. I adored how outrageously camp and spicy it was. Alex is a tattooed self-confessed nerd and I could completely relate to her awkwardness. Devlin was a complete ass, but ultimately loveable and charming despite his tendency to be a bit of a privileged Hollywood douche at times.

I absolutely loved the whole concept. Alex is a small-town outcast who is obsessed with a paranormal TV show and sets up an online fan forum. When she finally meets its star, Devlin Ashwood, at a convention, he is needlessly cruel and teenage Alex is absolutely shattered. Fast forward seventeen years (I had to admit the age-gap made me a little uncomfortable at times) Devlin's career has nosedived and he desperately needs her help. He thinks he's becoming a werewolf.

I found Devlin to be very immature and selfish at times which made it a little difficult to root for their budding romance. I think I actually preferred him more as a wolf?! Despite this, Fan Service was entertaining as hell, super camp and genuinely hilarious. Millennials that grew up watching Buffy and Supernatural will adore this light-hearted entertaining romp.

I was really curious from the blurb as it looked like a crazy and funny story. I would say that I loved the humour, the book definitely delivered on both the crazy and the funny.

However it took me about 50% of the book before I got really interested by the story and the characters, for some reason I just didn’t connect well with either at the beginning. I also felt the bit in the blurb where it says Devin needs to convince Alex to help him because she hates him so much was rather inaccurate - it barely took any time, she was dubitative at first but didn’t really push back against it long. It always throws me off when the blurb doesn’t properly reflect the content of the book.

After the halfway point is when I started to really enjoy the book. I liked the characters and their dynamic better and enjoyed the self development of both, how their relationship evolves as they fall for each other and make each other better. I got a lot more invested in Devin’s fate and how this all things was going to end up for him. All-in, I ended up on a good note and thought the second half of the book was much stronger, but that took me pushing through the first half to get there.

What a fun and entertaining read! perfect mix of humor, heart, and spice. The chemistry between the characters is spot-on, and the banter keeps things light and engaging.

Highly recommend for anyone who loves a mix of laughs, love, and a bit of heat.

When I first started reading, I thought it was a teen book.

Until I got to the spice!

It's something I would have really enjoyed back in my Buffy/Supernatural/TeenWolf era.

I think anyone who enjoyed the late '00s early '10s would more than likely have a soft spot for this book.

I found it a little bit hard to get into, but I may give it another try once released.

Fan Service follows actor, Devin Ashwood and Arcane superfan, Alex Lawson. Alex is an outcast who set up the fan forum for Arcane. She was a huge fan of Devin as a teenager but after meeting him at a fan convention she developed a hatred of him. Devin’s career has tanked since Arcane went off the air but he wakes up naked in the woods and needs Alex’s help. He thinks he is turning into a werewolf due to his claws, fangs and howling and only Alex can help him due to her expert knowledge on Arcane.

I’m giving this book 3 stars because it was enjoyable but it wasn’t a new favourite for me. I would recommend this for fans of this author’s other work as well as fans of paranormal romance such as My Roommate is a vampire and The Fake Mate by Lana Ferguson. This was written well and the werewolf elements were interesting but I didn’t fully connect with the characters meaning I felt a bit distant towards this romance. Plus I didn’t love the way Devin thought about Alex in his inner monologue, it was a bit icky to me. Overall though, this was a good read that I’d recommend.

This book feels like a love letter to fangirls, fanfiction writers/readers, and anyone who's obsessed over fandom. The story follows Alex, a bisexual, edgy veterinarian in her mid-thirties, who has been devoted to werewolf detective showThe Arcane Files since she was a teen. She's the moderator for the top forum dedicated to the show, and like all other fans, she's harboured a massive crush on TAF's top star, Devin Ashwood, who plays the main werewolf lead, Colby. But, a bad meeting experience as a teen turns her crush more sour as the years pass.

Seventeen years later, burned out star Devin finds himself experiencing the same changes his character went through- he's turning into a werewolf. Scared and alone, he turns to the most valuable source he can find, the mod of TAF's biggest forum. This leads him to small town Tompkins, where he teams up with outcast and number one fan Alex to help control his wolfy instincts, which seem to take a liking to Alex.

The pair's dynamic starts off rocky, he's got the attitude of a pampered LA star, and Alex still kind of hates him for the cruelty he showed her when she was younger. Devin doesn't really act his age of forty-two, and to begin with the romance feels flat, until it gradually develops into something heartfelt as they help each other heal, grow and deal with their personal traumas. Eventually Devin is quick to defend and understand Alex’s quirks and defenses, and in return Alex supports Devin in his fall from forced fame. It had some really cute parts, both paranormal and typical, and the spice was enjoyable too.

The writing style did feel a bit strange at times, with slang and attempts at humour not really landing. There were also a lot of pop culture and COVID references that I personally didn’t like. The pacing dragged a little during the middle and the paranormal wasn't overly explained or delved into, but despite not being what I expected, I still enjoyed it for what it was.

There's third-act breakup, but it made sense given both characters’ flaws and old habits arising, however the confessions and apologies were on point. The ending was sweet and tied most things up, sending out the message that healing takes time and it’s okay to let things go.

3/5 🌟

Screaming crying giggling and kicking my feet. This story is perfection.
Rosie has perfectly encapsulated millennial love for fanfic and the long term impact it leaves on our souls in the best possible way.
Devin and Alex are adorable - grumpy/sunshine with a werewolf and a nerdy vet tech - I ate it up and I adored every single page.
The novel is funny, enchanting, magical and heart warming. I love love loved it.

A fun, lighthearted rom-com for the ao3 girlies that grew up in the 00s flicking between the team werewolves/vampire tv show/movie of the month!

Is the MMC abit annoying to start with … yes … isn’t that sort of how you expect the child star to be … also yes. And theres a surprising amount of heart of be found in the moments between him and our badass FMC too!

A fun time, with a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously, abit slow to start but well worth sticking with it!

Fans of Twilight and Teen Wolf, what if your favourite character destroyed your hopes and dreams and then transformed into something a hell of a lot less fictional?

Alex Lawson spent her childhood at the heart of a fantasy series fandom. She knew The Arcane Files better than the writers, actors and directors put together. Until, on her 17th birthday, she met Devin. The star of the show. And you know what they say - never meet your heroes.

"Fandom was everything when you were in it and embarrassing as hell when you weren't."

Fan Service jumps to a decade later. The show has come to an end, Alex is the towns outcast and Devin is a has-been who may, or may not, be in the midst of a mental breakdown. How else could you explain blacking out and waking up naked on multiple occasions?

A viral video of Devin having a very public breakdown results in him deep diving into what could possibly be wrong. His research leads him to Alex, the mod of the most detailed fandom for the show, and he reaches out, desperate to get the answers to whatever is going on.

"On paper, they might seem like opposites. Him - charming, shallow, ripped. Her - bleeding heart with the personality of a feral alley cat. But they both lost themselves in stories."

This book was the perfect combination of fantasy, reality and romance. A love letter to fan culture, whilst having a hilarious twist on the realities of the shows and movies us fellow fantasy lovers grew up watching.

I have never read a book with a premise like it. Granted, the romance genre can get pretty repetitive but the extra layer written by Danan made it impossible to put down.

Highly recommend!

Fan Service by Rosie Danan completely pulled me in with its perfect mix of romance, humor, and heartfelt moments. I loved how it explored the pressures of fame and the struggle to stay true to yourself, all while delivering sizzling chemistry and swoon-worthy moments. The characters felt so real, and I was rooting for them every step of the way. Danan’s writing is sharp and witty, but what stuck with me most was the emotional depth, this story isn’t just about romance, it’s about self-discovery. If you love smart, steamy, and emotionally rich love stories, this one is a must-read!

This book gave me major Teen Wolf vibes, and I wa obsessed with that show when I was a teenager! 😍

The premise of the book was so good, but I think the execution could have used a little more work. The MMC was kind of hard to like, he was just really immature and just generally unlikeable..? Maybe it was just me, I’m not sure, but I struggled with him.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

4.5⭐, had a great time, would recommend. This book is absolutely ridiculous and I loved every second of it.

Devin is 42, the washed up former child actor turned leading man in a long running supernatural CW (sorry, I mean TW) series. Weird stuff is happening, and he thinks he might be turning into an actual werewolf like the one he used to play. He needs some help, and who better than Alex, 'the Mod' of the Arcane Files wiki fanpage....

Fan Service is very much an homage to the millennial fan culture of 10-20 years ago. It's unapologetically ridiculous, the writing is witty and fun, and the story just peak nostalgia. Devin needs a therapist more than a girlfriend and Alex probably (definitely) deserves better, but this is fiction so we'll ignore all that. Will make you want to rewatch whatever you used to obsess over around 2010 (in my case, TVD, which I've just confirmed is on Netflix UK). Curious to see how readers who don't fondly remember this particular period in tv history will feel about it.

Many thanks to Little, Brown Book Group for the Netgalley ARC. All opinions are of course my own.

I loved this book so much. The way that alex's connection to fandom, and just fandom in general is presented was beautiful. I think it's common for those in fandoms to be viewed as crazy or obsessed but the way this book explores how fandom helped Alex and how she then used that to help Devin was incredible. It was such a fun read, but it still had emotional depth without being too overbearing.

Devin Ashwood is your classic pretty faced airhead and I absolutely loved him for it. Like a big lovable golden retriever he often means well but doesn’t think before he speaks especially when he’s around his Black Cat counterpart Alex. The amount of times he would say stuff to her that had me sucking in a breath, but he’s not unlikable at all especially when his primal brain kicks in and he goes looking for *DarkBitterDelicate 🥵*

It’s something I love about Rosie Danan’s writing, how well rounded her characters are. They have real flaws, say stupid things without thinking but also are honest and raw which makes for such genuinely enjoyable reading.

As a chronically online weirdo myself I loved all of the pop culture references scattered throughout the book, and I deeply resonated with Alex and her group chat of internet pals who bonded over one specific thing but grew into an important part of each others lives. Seeing those snippets in the narrative was so heartwarming.

I enjoyed every single second of this read and can’t wait to add it to my regular re read rotation.
