The Secret Inheritance follows the interactions of three estranged siblings after the death of their father.

The description for the book makes it sound like the story is told from a singular viewpoint - Rosie's. However, the story is actually told from no less than six different viewpoints - Rosie, Hettie, James, Clara, Edward and Sarah. I found this made the book feel very convoluted and, especially in the first half of the book, near enough the exact same information was told from several viewpoints. This unfortunately made the very slow pace more obvious and tedious (the story doesn't really start progressing until about 45% of the way through the book, with the first 45% mostly being the same bits of backstory repeated by each of the siblings).

There is a lot of animosity, blame, secrets, jealousy and betrayal between the characters. Pitted against each other as children by their father, with a mother who was no better, the siblings learned to be distrustful of each other. The only characters I found likeable were Hettie's three children (who play a minor role in the story). I started off feeling sympathy for Rosie, but as the story progressed I found her to be as unbearable and unlikeable as her siblings and Clara, the housekeeper. I think the author was aiming for some sort of reconciliation and character improvement towards the end, but it felt forced and unnatural.

Unfortunately, I found the story to be very predictable, guessing most of the plot points way before they happened.

The Secret Inheritance by Rachel Lynch is an engaging and emotional read that kept me hooked from beginning to end. I loved the blend of mystery, family secrets, and personal discovery created a compelling story. While some parts felt a bit predictable, the characters were well-developed, and the emotional depth added richness to the plot. If you enjoy a good mystery with heart, this one is definitely worth reading.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to receive this book for an honest review.

I think I found myself a new author. I enjoyed this book.

It was about a fatherwho has died and requested that his three grown up children return to their family home and they have to spend seven days there together to benefit from the will. I did not realize it was a thriller. It was a disfunctional family that had a long history of issues.

It kept me wanting more.

I enjoy reading Rachel Lynch’s books especially the series featuring Detective Kelly Porter but this stand-alone book was equally as enjoyable. A father has died and has requested that his three grown up children return to their family home and they have to spend seven days there together to benefit from the will. We soon realise that they had a really traumatic childhood and had been estranged from their father. Rose left home when their younger brother Christian died, she also stopped talking that day and wonders how she will cope with the seven days. Soon secrets are revealed from their childhood with tragic results, I really enjoyed this book even though I disliked the family. A very good psychological thriller.
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this week,

3.5⭐️

This one was just decent for me. I felt the characters were real and raw but I also feel like the hatred the siblings had towards each other was too intense. Overall the story was pretty good.

I really enjoyed the layered mystery in this one. The writing pulled me in right away, and I loved the slow, almost haunting atmosphere that built as the story unfolded. The family dynamics were complex and felt authentic, and the twists kept me on my toes without feeling over-the-top. It had that classic, moody British suspense vibe I love, and while it wasn’t breakneck-paced, it was immersive and satisfying. A great pick if you're in the mood for a slow-burn thriller with depth.

Rosie Fitzherbert has recently been informed of her father's passing and must return to the family estate, Warbury House, accompanied by her siblings, Hettie and James, and their respective families, to receive information regarding their inheritance. Rosie departed Warbury House on the day her younger brother Christian died, and she has not returned since; it is also the day she ceased speaking, prompting her to wonder whether her return will precipitate a change. Upon arrival, the siblings are advised that they must cohabitate harmoniously for seven days to receive their inheritance. However, as past secrets begin to surface, it remains to be seen which sibling will crack first and whether the truth surrounding Christian's death will be revealed. The Secret Inheritance, Lynch's latest literary endeavor, is replete with suspense and intrigue. Through the perspectives of each sibling, the author delves into the Fitzherbert family's past and present, uncovering a multitude of secrets, some of which have remained concealed for decades. Jude Fitzherbert was not a decent father, and even in death, he continues to exert control over his children, contributing to the individuals they have become. This well-crafted book features dark twists, albeit unfolding at a slow pace, which made it challenging for me to progress. I failed to establish a connection with any of the characters; having encountered numerous dysfunctional families, the Fitzherberts surpass them all in terms of dysfunction.

On the surface this sounded like something I would absolutely love. Family Drama? Mystery? Emotional angst? Unresolved trauma? This sounds like a captivating dark domestic thriller, but in reality I really struggled to feel invested.

I hate writing this in a review but honestly? I was so bored for most of this. It felt like an absolute slog to get to any of the good bits and if I didn’t HATE DNFing I absolutely would have.

I personally don’t mind when a story has unlikeable characters (that is definitely the case here) but I struggled to really connect with any of them and that meant I just wasn’t that invested. And I think that was the crux of my issues.

This is a well written book. The plot is fairly interesting, the mystery and twists are really solid and the pacing was fair too. I think for me it all comes down to simply not caring about any of the characters.

The storyline itself was good but I found the characters lacking.

The book held my attention and curiosity enough to keep me focused and wasn’t super predictable, which I like. I like to be surprised.

Overall enjoyable enough to look up others by this author and to recommend for others to read.

Thank you NetGalley for the copy

Had all the pieces to be a great book, but just couldn’t get into it. Everything and everyone just felt tedious and overbearing.

This is one of the best books I have read for a while. The characters were well drawn and the story compelling. I particularly enjoyed the differing perspectives that each sibling had on their lives and their family. Highly recommend.
