Let me just say this loud and clear: Tomi Adeyemi did NOT come to play.

Reading Children of Blood and Bone felt like diving headfirst into a world that was both wildly imaginative and deeply ancestral. It was like The Hunger Games got dipped in shea butter, wrapped in kente cloth, and blessed with the spiritual power of the Orïsha. The entire time I was reading, I kept thinking: this is what it would look like if Wakanda had a revolution led by its most powerful outcasts.

From the very first page, I saw myself in Zélie. Not just as a heroine with magic, but as a Black woman navigating a world that fears her power and punishes her joy. Her fire, her rage, her love, her resilience—it echoed something deep in me. She is not the “strong Black woman” trope we’ve been fed. She is raw, flawed, powerful, grieving, and still daring to hope. That’s real.

And can we talk about the world-building?! Orïsha is lush and layered. Adeyemi didn’t just write a fantasy novel—she gave us a spiritual landscape, a cultural tapestry that honors our ancestors while pushing fantasy to its future. The magic system felt sacred. The rituals, the languages, the griot wisdom—it all resonated with the weight of diasporic history, yet danced with the rhythm of an Afrofuturistic dream.

The stakes were real, too. This wasn’t just a cute adventure—it was rebellion, revolution, survival. Themes of colorism, state violence, grief, and generational trauma were woven in so seamlessly that I didn’t feel like I was being taught—I felt like I was being seen.

If The Hunger Games was a story about rebellion, Children of Blood and Bone is a story about reclamation. It’s about what happens when Black girls stop asking for permission and start remembering who we are and who we come from.

This book made me feel like I could do anything. Like my magic—our magic—is real. Like my Blackness isn’t just something beautiful, it’s something powerful. Something divine.

Tomi Adeyemi, thank you for giving us a world where we don’t just survive—we fight, we rise, and we reign. 🖤✨

Our book club’s experience with the Children of Blood and Bone Book Club Kit was nothing short of extraordinary! Tomi Adeyemi’s story is already such an epic, emotional journey—filled with magic, courage, heartbreak, and hope—but this kit transformed our reading into a truly unforgettable shared adventure.

The discussion questions were phenomenal. They didn’t just ask about plot points; they pushed us to reflect on the themes of oppression, justice, and resilience that are woven so powerfully throughout the book. We talked deeply about Zélie’s bravery, Inan’s conflict, and Amari’s transformation, and we found ourselves drawing connections between Orïsha and our own world today. The kit gave us a framework to have real, meaningful conversations while also celebrating the rich fantasy elements that make this book so unique.

What made it even better were the extras. The creative activities and suggestions helped us immerse ourselves in Adeyemi’s world. A couple of us even brought themed snacks, inspired by the kit’s ideas, and it felt like we were truly honoring the spirit of the story together. The kit encouraged us to think not only as readers but as participants—exploring culture, symbolism, and even our own perspectives through the lens of this incredible fantasy.

Another thing I loved is how the kit balanced depth with accessibility. Even those in our group who aren’t usually fantasy readers felt completely drawn in. The prompts gave them an easy entry point, while longtime fantasy lovers got to geek out about worldbuilding, magic systems, and favorite battles. It created a space where everyone’s voice mattered, just like the novel emphasizes the power of collective action.

By the end of the night, we weren’t just talking about how much we loved the book—we were talking about what it meant to us, how it made us feel, and how it changed the way we see the world. That’s the mark of not only a powerful story but an incredibly well-designed book club kit.

If you’re planning to read Children of Blood and Bone with your book club, do not skip this kit. It will take your experience from great to unforgettable, helping you unpack every layer of Adeyemi’s masterpiece while having fun and building deeper connections with your group. This was hands-down one of the most powerful and rewarding book club nights we’ve ever had. Highly, highly recommend!

This book club kit was a great tool to facilitate discussion for the book club. We were able to dive deep into the character development, world-building, and self-discovery that this book prompted.
I liked the interview with the author segment. I always wonder what inspired these stores and the author's thought process behind their characters. It was very insightful. I didn't care for the bookmarks for the simple fact that I prefer a plain bookmark.
I liked the Maji Clan quiz- apparently, I'm a winder :)

This was a great resource when teaching the novel. I liked the discussion questions and summaries. Will there be similar resources created for the other two books in the series?

The book has spawned a lot of awesome reviews. For a debut novel, Tomi Adeyemi has actually done quite well. The writing style is especially good. But then, most of the good reviews garnered by this book are from Americans and Europeans, not Africans (especially Nigerians). She has the right idea, blending Yoruba mythology with regular YA.
I loved the magic system, the world, the characters and cannot wait for the next book! And don't let me start with that GORGEOUS cover. This might be one of the most beautiful book that i own. But, even though and love it so much the reason why I gave it 4 starts was.... the romance.
In my opinion it was to forced and while I was reading I didn't care for any of the 2 couples that we have in this book. I usually am a sucker for romance but this book wasn't my cup of tea.

This one is super fun since it has word searches and quizzes with it. This would be super helpful not only for a book club but for teachers as well.

I especially appreciate the inclusion of trigger warnings at the beginning.
The author interview, of course, is a nice touch as well.
The book questions are helpful, but I think they could have been deeper.

It was a cool little guide. The interview with the author and the discussion questions where the best parts for me and my group. I could have done without all the extra games and swag. Will be checking out more book club kits in the future.

Great resource to have when reading the book and discussing it with others. I'm hoping to get more people who have read it so that I can hear the interpretation that other people have and what else they got from the book.
