This collection of nine emotionally intense short stories form acclaimed Brazilian author Marilia Arnaud failed to hit their mark with me. They explore the darker side of human psychology through a diverse cast of characters and are lyrical and introspective, but I couldn’t relate to these characters and their turbulent inner lives. Although set against the background and culture of Brazil, they nevertheless have a universal resonance, but are more like vignettes than satisfying stories, and simply weren’t for me.
