I really tried but this book wasn't for me. Didn't like the writting, the story or the characters. I couldn't make myself read to the end because there wasn't a single element that hooked me. Life is too short to read books that don't captivate us, so this is a DNF for me.

I did not finish this book.

Harry Potter references in this day and age? As a queer person, I cannot stress this enough. NO. We don’t need it. While I appreciate the story did a lot for a lot of people, we cannot separate the art from the artist. Especially when that artist is as horrible as Rowling. Her internal misogyny completely undoes everything the author was trying to say about discrimination and patriarchy.

I really really wanted to like this book. I'm a sucker for a cute romance but I got so frustrated with Allie that I almost gave up and DNF.

How she could be so utterly clueless was just beyond reason, not the least for making decisions like a deranged teenager as opposed to a 30 something "published author".

The premise was promising but the execution was lacking.

It felt like there were too many plot lines happening and nothing overtly exciting happened with any of them...

Can't even say it'd make a good Summer beach read as I just found the book quite excruciating from about the third chapter.

Will actually seemed like a good character but we hardly find out anything about him for being the lead love interest.

All in all. It's hours of my life I wish I'd spent reading something else.

**Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for giving me an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

Loved the idea for the plot of this book, but the execution wasn’t there for me. It was a lighthearted and easy read, which I do appreciate. I just wish the romance had been a little more engaging. I didn’t connect with the main couple the way I want to when reading a romance.

3.5/5 stars rounded up!

A charming story with heart, humor, and just enough spice

The Plot Twist is a love letter to storytelling, unexpected friendship, and the magic that can happen when you step outside your comfort zone. I really enjoyed this one—it was witty, cozy, and had that perfect blend of warmth and romantic tension.

The dynamic between Allie and Martin was a standout for me. Their unlikely friendship gave the book an extra layer of depth, and watching their creative partnership unfold was just as satisfying as the romantic arc. Allie’s chemistry with Will brought the romantic comedy vibes I was hoping for, and the behind-the-scenes look at publishing and writer's block felt both relatable and fun.

It’s a story about writing, yes—but it’s also about growth, connection, and finding joy again in what you do and who you love. Highly recommend for fans of Emily Henry and anyone who enjoys stories about writers, love, and second chances.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This was such a fun, cozy read—like a warm cup of tea with just a hint of workplace chaos. I love easy romances, and if there’s a book about books (or, in this case, writers writing books), I’m immediately in.

Allie is a romance author teetering on the edge of burnout and low-key losing faith in love. Miles is a crime writer who hasn’t put out anything in years. Their editor (new publisher? Publishing overlord? I’m still not 100% clear) is steamrolling through staff like it’s their villain origin story, so Allie and Miles team up and genre-swap for fun and survival. He helps her rediscover the spark of love (thanks to his own long, happy marriage), and she feeds him twisty crime plots to get his creative mojo back.

Enter Will: a catering guy at a publishing event who is, frankly, dreamboat material. Their connection is instant but grounded—no instalove nonsense here—and he’s so wonderfully decent that you can’t help but root for him. Yes, there’s a touch of conflict (it is a romance, after all), but it’s small potatoes in the grand scheme of things and handled like emotionally competent adults (gasp).

If you like books about writers, quiet love stories, and characters who actually talk to each other, this one will go down easy.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for this honest review—more genre-swapping writer friends, please!

I loveeee a good romance author who has writers block trope. I eat it up. I also love when they seek help from another author who writes in a totally different genre than they do. This book was so cute, I absolutely adored it.

cute bookish themed book with a rom com writer who switches places with an old crime novelist to try and escape their writer’s block. It wasn’t my favorite and honestly I had to really focus to finish it so I think it’ll be a 3 star sadly! still a cool concept but it didn’t hit for me :(

I enjoyed this. I truly loved how the story was woven. It was relatable as well as inspiring.

Most writers face writer’s block at some point in their lives and it was so interesting and well done to see two vastly different authors face it at completely different ages and situations.

I also loved that issues within the publishing industry was highlighted.

The romance aspect was sweet as well.

I was pulled headfirst into this story and couldn’t put the book down! Goymer has crafted a compelling rom-com, with interesting characters, a strong plot with unexpected twists, and a perfectly obnoxious villain. Allie has believable-flaws, Martin proves an excellent mentor, and Liam is just the right blend of charming and mysterious without leaving the realm of reality. Overall, a solid rom com and really enjoyable book!

I am sorry to say that I DNF this book a short amount in. I just knew I was going to be annoyed with the FMC and after reading other reviews I know I made the right call. As much as I try to read the arcs I’m given to help the authors, sometimes I just can’t force myself. There are too many good books in this world.

In the short amount I read, the inner monologues were never ending and so whiney and woe is me. Also, some very weird comments about a boyfriend that should have been cleared up by the time I decided to give up but they were not yet.

I had the very wrong expectation that the author she’d try to help out of his book slump would be her love interest but nope he was a much older man. Instead, the love interest’s meet cute was terrible and there seemed to be no chemistry even though her inner monologue is panting after him. She also has a boyfriend when she is talking about how much she wants this new guy? I didn’t get far enough in for that to be explained but I wasn’t interested to find out.

Romcom author Allie Edwards and grumpy crime writer Martin Clark are both stuck with writer’s block and looming deadlines. At a party, they hatch a wild plan—swap genres and write each other’s books.
As they work together, Martin becomes a father-figure to Allie, and she meets Will, a dreamy caterer who might just be her perfect leading man—and the spark her love life (and writing) needs.
A heartwarming, quirky story about creativity, connection, and unexpected romance.

Okay, where do I even start? I honestly don’t think I have enough words to describe how much I disliked this book. It’s the first one that threw me into such a massive reading slump that I could barely make myself read anything afterward. But, as usual, I pushed through the pain and FINISHED IT.
And let me tell you—it wasn’t worth it. Not at all.
The plot? It's got a bit of everything—way too much, actually—and none of it connects or makes any real sense.
The characters? I found myself disliking Allie (the main character) more and more with each chapter. I actually liked the side characters more than her.
The blurb? Sounds appealing. You think it'll be interesting to see two writers help each other finish their books after getting stuck… Well, that idea shows up in maybe a few chapters. The rest? Just Allie rambling about who knows what.
The romance? Basically non-existent. You have no idea if Allie actually cares about Will until the very end—when everything’s already gone downhill and fallen apart.
It was just too much all at once, the characters weren’t likable, and I couldn’t connect with them at all. The story became hard to follow after a while, and even though it’s told from Allie’s perspective, in third person POV, it still wasn’t an easy or enjoyable read.
Do yourself a favor—don’t even start this book. High expectations, zero payoff.

This is the second book I've tried by Goymer. The first one i finished, but it was meh. This one sounded good though, so I decided to give her a second chance.

Unfortunately this was a DNF only a few chapters in.

A Harry Potter mention in 2025? Plus, I didn't realise our heroine would be in a relationship at the start when she meets her LI. I didn't get far enough to know if there's cheating or a break up but yeah...I was put off.

So sadly, not for me.

I hate to say it, but this one was a DNF for me. I tried, I really did, but the painfully slow burn and an unbearably unlikeable main character made it impossible to push through. I don’t mind a slow build if there’s a payoff, but this? I just didn’t care enough to stick around to find out.

The writing itself had potential, and I can see why some might enjoy it, but when you’re actively annoyed by the protagonist and waiting (and waiting… and waiting) for something to actually happen, it’s time to call it quits.

It's a heartwarming, predictable, but sweet story. I think there were just too many subplots—writer’s block, Allie and Will’s romance, Martin’s marriage, and an editor takedown. With so much happening, some storylines didn't get the spotlight I hoped for.

I loved the concept of this book but the execution kinda fell flat for me. I never really connected with the main character finding her behaviour very opportunistic, self-serving, and shallow. Her communication skills were so lacking too which was hard to read. So much of what happened was so easily avoidable with just a moment of communication and it seemed unlikely that a woman of this age would be so lacking here. The dynamic between Allie and Martin was somewhat entertaining but the relationship between her and Will was so up and down that it barely registered to me. I wish the author had spent more time building their relationship so I could have been more invested in them and their happily ever after. I think this one just wasn't for me but I'm sure others will enjoy.

I received a digital copy of this book through NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Such a fun read with a bit of an Emily Henry vibe. I’ve seen a few books lately with this plot line of an author having writers block and not being able to complete or start their book. The key difference here that made the book stand out was the introduction of martins character. Rather than him being the romance pair, he fit in so well as the mentor. Would recommend.

Romance, villainous bosses, secret identities, handsome strangers… what’s not to enjoy? In addition a sweet story reigniting a tired but lasting love. There were parts of this one that needed a it of suspension of disbelief but I was happy to allow that. Enjoyable and sweet, with a little bit of heat.

Thank you netgalley for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. The Plot Twist was cute, charming and emotional. This book will definitely tug and your heartstrings and the main character, Allie, will quickly work her way into your heart.

It was an adorable read, Goymer's characters felt a little flat at the beginning but soon the story picked up. The plot twist was...something!
