I read this a while ago, and forgot to post a review. (Oops)
An interesting start to a new (grimdark) fantasy series. The world is gritty, brutal, and the characters are put through their paces. Watson's writing is good, and the pacing was pretty good too - often, fantasy novels take a little too long to get going.

I haven't yet read the rest of the series, but I'm interested in doing so.
