I thought this was a lot of fun, but the humor is not for the sophisticated. Fantastic Frog and the Amazing Tad Lad are on a mission, and they want to do the right thing, but they're not very smart. I'm hoping these two get up to more hijinks and I get to read about it-- there were some good underlying messages.

This new middle grade graphic novel is a very funny take on superhero stories. Reminiscent of TMNT, these amphibians heroes walk and talk. Unfortunately, although they are superpowered, they are not very bright. The brightly colored comic book style illustrations will engage any youngster. The plot is silly, but the environmental message about the contaminated swamp does hold water. The puns and jokes made me smile. This book is aimed at kids who enjoy potty humor, but I thought that a whole chapter with the poop and puke went a bit to far. Otherwise, this cute book is a winner. I am looking forward to the next installment in the ongoing adventures of Fantastic Frog and Tad Lad.

First and foremost- graphic novels/comic books are not the genre I typically read. I am trying to break into them, but it's been tough. When I saw Fantastic Frog and the Amazing Tad Lad, I jumped at the chance to check it out. I struggled for a bit to figure out how Fantastic Frog and Tad Lad came to be, until they met the scientist who explained everything to them. While the story made a little more sense after that, I found the book to be sort of confusing overall.

The art and colour palette are really fun but the plot is all over the place. The themes are both simplified (in the superhero kinda way) and too scary for children. I am not sure who is the intended audience. This book is definitely a work in progress. I would be interested to read it again when the project is finished.

I freely admit this is a DNF at 50%. I just can’t take it anymore. Fantastic frog and amazing Ted Lad are experiments who have been given super strength and the ability to fly but share a brain between the two of them. I don’t like how the book is constantly using putdowns like dumb and stupid. And while I get that this is for kids, it feels like a grown-up talking down to kids instead of actually getting down on kids levels. It’s also overly long. I do think they should have kept this shorter than 200 pages instead of having two or three stories with an intermission, it should have stopped after they finished the first mission. Because after the first mission, I could not go on anymore. I wanted to like this and somebody will. I just don’t know who that is right now.

This book started out slow, and I didn't see the comparison to Dogman or Investigators. However, the potty humor and clever jokes began around chapter 2, and I really think that little boys especially ages 6-9 will enjoy this series. I chuckled a bit at the jokes that their scratch and sniff feature didn't work, and liked that the print was larger and allowed for a quick read for reluctant readers. I recommend this for public libraries and for any kids who like gross humor.

Netgalley ARC-
3.5 stars
I really enjoyed the beginning, but it became incredibly yucky 3/4 of the way in unfortunately.

What an incredible start to a new middle grade graphic novel series. Definitely in line with series like Dog Man and InvestiGators with a little bit of crude humour. But who doesn't love a good fart or poop joke now and again? This is certainly something we'll want in our collection and I'm looking forward to the silly antics these two amphibians will get up to next!
