This was my first Detective Riley book by Anna-Lou Weatherley. I definitely felt like this book was a slow burn. It starts with a young teenage couple coming home covered in blood and someone is dead. The boyfriends parents are very protective and will go to any lengths to keep their son out of prison. They don't know the full details and doubt they are given the full story by the teens, but still decide to join forces with the daughters parents to keep everyone out of trouble. You immediately find out that the mother of the boyfriend actually works for the girlfriends parents. Low and behold, her parents are very wealthy and affluent, respectable, and powerful in the community. Little do they know who they are actually dealing with and at what lengths THEY will go to protect (not their daughter), but their own reputation and names. If you like a slow burn and doubting everything you think is going to happen, this is a great read! I am excited to check out more books by this author! I have already bought the previous Detective Riley books that came before this one!

A great thriller full of secrets and suspense, this book had me so addicted and gripped throughout. Will definitely be reading more by this author.

What a great story this is. Gripping from the start and some really evil characters. I was well in to the story before I figured out how the title fitted, but then it fell in to place. . I think this story would make a great film .

I chose this book because the description appealed to me, and when I saw the cover art, I felt drawn to that too.

This is part of a series featuring Detective Dan Riley, and I haven't read any of the previous books, but after reading this, I think I would be interested in reading more.

I took an immediate interest in Christine and her family. I felt that as characters, they were relatable, and their interactions and behaviours were quite realistic. I thought about Christine's situation, and how it might feel to be in her shoes, wondering what I myself might do. I also liked Dan Riley as a character; I enjoyed how he worked, and interacted with the other characters.

Once I became invested, I felt the need to read one chapter, then another, then another, until I reached the end. This was a page turner and a tense nail-biter, with some interesting characters.

Great to have Detective Dan Riley back - firm favourite of mine.

Got sucked into this book straight away, some truly vile characters - the Levinson's I'm looking at you, but was absolutely rooting for the Carter family..

Dan is not only up against a crime that at first seems cut and dried with obvious suspects to a uncovering more layers to the murder and not only that but police corruption.

All in all a fabulous read and I even felt a bit a emotional at the last chapter when more of Dan's family life was revealed.

Already waiting in anticipation for the next Dan Riley case.

This explored the dark side of the lengths mothers will go to in order to protect their children. Full of intense scenes and shocking twists, this was a worthy read for any thriller/mystery lover. The story flowed seamlessly, and each chapter left me wanting to keep going, refusing to put this down well into the night. Although this is part of a series, there is no need to read the others first and can easily be read as a stand-alone. I really enjoyed this one and give it four stars.

I have read all the books in the Dan Riley series and I have loved all of them. I think this series needs to be read!

I could not put this one down. What a great concept. Poor Christine wakes to hear a commotion downstairs and before she knows what is going on her son has confessed to murder and the police are knocking on the door... what lengths will she have to go to in order to protect her son?

I love the writing style and how we get to see the story unfold through detective Dan Riley, but also the family impacted by the events. It works beautifully in ramping up the tension as you the reader try to piece it together.

Dan is a great character and he follows his gut. I like that he seems relatable and fair in his decision making. I thought the author did a great job with the other characters especially Christine as she struggles to cope with her world falling apart.

Such a page turner with all the twists and turns I have grown to love from Anna-Lou Weatherley. She is a definite go to author for me. Highly recommend this if you love a great thriller/Crime read.

A parent, especially a mother would go to extreme lengths to protect her child.
Christine and Ed have already experienced more than most people are asked to handle in a lifetime.
I liked them and probably would have reacted and acted very similarly.
Helene was messed up and a very flawed character. Her maternal instincts were worse than a feral cat.
I liked Dan the best. He was dogged, determined, and a dad who faced with a major discovery in his own family, sees things from the parental perspective.
The book has lots of twists and unexpected angles!l

What kind of Mother by Anna-Lou Weatherly is definitely a suspenseful book full of twists and turns that I for the most part did not see coming. The twists occur throughout the book, but especially the last hundred pages or so.

We are introduced to a lady named Christine and her husband Ed. They have two children, but unfortunately lost their daughter Cora when she was very young. Their son Connor is a smart teenager with a scholarship and a bright future ahead of him. One night he goes out to a club with Paris, the daughter of the family that Christine cleans for. What happens that night, changes everyone's lives and not always for the better.

I was a bit worried at the amount of characters in the book at first, but was able to easily keep them apart. The book sucked me in quickly and kept me on my toes with twist after twist.

I first became acquainted with Dan when I toured with the seventh book, The Housewife's Secret, so I couldn't wait to catch up with him and Lucy again.

What Kind of Mother is the eighth book in the Dan Riley series and the second I've read from Weatherley. It easily reads as a standalone.

The pace is set from the off as we're thrown into an action filled plot of deceit, duplicity and reprisals.

Weatherley's characters are fantastic, the plot is intense and it had me gripped from the opening chapters.

What Kind of Mother by Anna-Lou Weatherley is another fantastic story. Full of twists and turns. I was so gripped and couldn't put it down.
A twist filled gripping book which worked perfectly as a stand-alone for me! The twists kept me on my toes and fully engaged.

Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of tis book and for letting me take part in this tour. I am a huge fan of Detective Dan and have been reading these books since the beginning of the series but this is not necessary to read this book. It could very easily be read as a standalone.

Detective Dan has caught quite the case this time. With lots of secrets and lies it's not easy for him to uncover the truth.

When I first started reading this series, back in 2018, I wasn't yet a mother. I now have a 15 month old and some of these storylines just hit different now. I could completely understand Christine's character and I empathised with her differently to how I think I would have done before having my little girl. During her monologue near the end of the book I felt myself nodding along with her completely agreeing with everything she said.

I consumed this book from start to finish. I don't always get as much time to read now, #toddlermumlife, but I made sure I got all those chores done as quickly as possible to I could get back to this story. I really struggled to put it down. Anna-Lou had me hooked from the first page and had me in tears by the last.

Yes! I loved this. The lengths a mother will go to protect their kids. Gives me shivers. Excellent read. It had me hooked right from the beginning, and kept me turning pages late into the night. A few unexpected twists and turns got me, too. Highly recommended! 5⭐

I didn’t realize this was part of a series prior to reading this book, but I was still able to understand and I don’t necessarily think you need to read the previous books to read this one.
This storyline was good and at times kept me needing to keep reading to find out what would happen next. I thought this book was very interesting and unique. It made me question how far I would go to cover up a crime for my child.

What Kind Of Mother, is the eighth installment in the Dan Riley mystery series by Anna Lou Weatherly, on a Sunday morning Connor Carter and Paris Levins, wake their parents up to tell them they think they’re murderers Connor‘s parents are shook, but Paris‘s parents go on immediate defense and it’s up to detective Dan Riley and his crew, to figure out what really happened. The case will bring Dan to the ugly underbelly of the town he loves but DNA will bring it right back to the teenagers. Who killed Matt Shepherd and why? I really like these books. I love that they’re standalone and read like thrillers and although there’s a bit far-fetchedness with some of the story, I would still absolutely recommend it. I love that. Dan is respectful to everyone until giving a reason not to be. I thought the intrigue with his boss trying to rush the case added another level to the story and I absolutely love the way. The book ended. I stayed up all night to finish this book and now have to work a 12 hour shift, it was definitely worth it.

Unfortunately, this book was a DNF for me. With this being said, I think I will be in the minority with this one, and a lot of people will enjoy it.

One of the reasons that this was a DNF for me was early on in the book, there was an extremely detailed description of a corpse. It felt unnecessary to the book to go into that much detail, and was rather disturbing. Every time I picked up the book, it was the first thing I thought of. I wasn’t aware of any trigger warnings going into the book (I may have missed them), but if they are not in there, I believe they should be!

Another reason is that I found it hard to connect with the characters in the book. As someone who does not have a child, it was not engaging to read a novel about the strength of the mother-son relationship and how far a parent will go for their child.

I do think that this is an entertaining and well-written novel, but just not the right fit for me. I recommend reading this is you like face-paced thrillers and novels that will draw you in from the very first page. I see a lot of people comparing it to The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden, and I couldn’t agree more!
