A very good, chilling modern mystery/crime novel. The story follows FBI Special Agent Gil Martins, who investigates domestic terrorism for the Houston office. He's assigned an investigation into a series of "liberal" deaths. As he examines what's been happening, and starts to gather evidence and leads, he is told a seemingly far-fetched theory. The novel examines a number of contemporary issues surrounding religion in American society, as well as Martins's personal struggle with belief - all wrapped up in a quite gripping suspense/crime novel. Well-written, but perhaps not as good as the author's Bernie Gunther historical mysteries.
