Set in Cornwall, this is an emotional story that centres around a crumbling Cornish Mansion with an eventful past. As is often the case, the old building has a presence that defines it and a supernatural atmosphere. The story begins when Cordelia unexpectedly inherits the house. It has unsettling memories for her, and she wants to be rid of it, but others who love her want her to make her peace with it and move on with her life. The story explores her Cornish upbringing, life in London, and the relationships that bring her to the house. Its diverse characters, all complex and relatable, complement the vivid storytelling. It's a satisfying read following Delia's experiences as she renovates the house and starts a new chapter in her life. I like the characterisation, particularly Delia's emotional journey to happiness, the vibrant Cornish setting and the supernatural atmosphere the house engenders.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

I know more of Fern Britton from her TV career and this is actually only the second book of hers that I have read.
In 'A Cornish Legacy' the protagonist is Delia and during the course of the novel we learn about her early life, then her disastrous marriage, followed by her inheriting to her great shock Wilder Hoo, a country house in Cornwall that she has connections to.
A pleasant summer read with wonderful descriptions of Cornwall and I found the house and garden restoration details particularly enjoyable. If Cornwall, Gardening and Country Houses appeal then this is one for you.

I’ve always been a fan of books by Fern and it feels like there’s been quite a gap since the last. That said I was excited to receive an advance copy of this one.
It’s full of interesting characters and as we delve into their history we find sadness and difficulty but by the end it will warm your heart.

Fern Britton is one of my favourite authors, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading her latest book.
Set in Cornwall, Delia returns to the old manor house which she has inherited. Having mixed feelings about the house, she is determined to sell as quickly as possible, and forget the past which still haunts her.
The book explores her past maturing into the top hair stylist she becomes, and the disturbing secret which her mother and Auntie Rose kept hidden.
All the characters are well described, and I enjoyed the humour and banter between Delia’s Aunt Rose, her best friend Sammi, and the mysterious housekeeper Mrs Joy. All offer support, and are people you can depend on. The rugged Cornish scenery brings it to life with its outstanding beauty, you can almost feel the rush of the waves as they crash on the shore.
The book is heartwarming and mainly lighthearted, exploring Delia’s feelings for Johnny, but also explores domestic abuse. As Delia matures her character develops and the second part of the book brings in new characters who add depth and interest.
Although, at first, Part 2 of the story lacked pace, I found this to be a compelling read which keeps you turning the pages.

Thank you to Netgalley and Harpercollins for an advanced copy of this beautiful book.
Delia has been left a crumbling Manor by her ex husband and her first instinct is to sell however with her aunts help she comes to terms with her past and with the spell of Cornwall and the magic or romance this makes the book a lovely read Fern Britton!

A happy ending after a sad and unfortunate life for Delia. Set in Cornwall and London, a story about being brought up by two sisters with no knowledge of a Dad, except that he was away doing good deeds in far of places, or so the story was spun by her mum. Basically her mum, Christine fell pregnant after a brief flirtation with a local guy, who when he found out told her that actually he was going out with someone else too and was about to marry that someone else!!! So she made up a story to tell Delia about a fabulous Dad who was always busy elsewhere, which amazingly Delia bought! Until she was 17 when her mum had an accident on the small holding they had and died. Her Aunt Rose then told Delia the truth. Leaving Delia reeling and angry, she went off to London and became a fantastic hairdresser of great renown. Met an actor, married him after only a short time and regretted it later as he turned out to be quite a cad, along with his parents. Divorced. Then a few year's later, her Ex died and left her this great big house in Cornwall. The rest of the story is about her doing up the house, on a tight budget and meeting all the locals, including Mrs Joy, who would appear to be a ghost??? or certainly having other powers! Never really explained, left up to one's imagination.
An intriguing tale, fun happy read as it all comes good in the end.

Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I have really enjoyed all this authors books and this was up there as one of my favourites. Great characters and storyline

This looked like a cosy read from a respected and well loved writer. Lots of themes and timelines cross this novel set in cosy Cornwall.
Rejection. Deceit. Threats. Rape. Alcoholism. Delia inherits a wrecked ancient house & wants
to sell immediately due to its bad memories. Her best friend's reaction is the opposite & he tries
to persuade her otherwise. Delia’s Aunt helps her come to terms with the lies of her upbringing &
a father who didn't want her or her mother. But confrontation can erupt into a violence. Does she
find true love and peace in this sweetest of locations?
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collin's for a digital copy pre publication. This is my own honest
review.

You only have to say old manor house and Cornwall and I am immediately drawn in. A lovely story in past and present that is not fast moving but still had me hooked from the beginning. Great characters and setting makes this a perfect book for this summer

It's time to fall in love with a visit to Cornwall all over again with A Cornish Legacy.
Cordelia Jago is an interesting character. She doesn't wear any make-up, is a bit fed up and all is a bit ordinary. She's also not had things easy, having lost the major thing in life, so you really can feel for her. Things, however, change when she discovers she's been left a manor house in a will. This manor house, Wilderhoo, like the setting in Cornwall, seems to be quite a character in itself and has quite profound effects on her, which in turn makes things quite thought-provoking for the reader.
What makes this inheritance really different is that Cordelia doesn't actually want it. She remembers it from another place in time. It becomes quite a mysterious book in that way. It sweeps you up because by this time you want to know why she doesn't want this big country pile to do up, apart from it being a money pit. Makes you want to read more into what the memories its bringing back as the house then appears to also have a life of its own... It really seems to go with the saying of "walls have ears". This country pile just knows things and there are conscious and unconscious thoughts that Cordelia then has about it.
The book is succinctly set in both the past and the present, giving a whole picture about what's been going on. It's told in a very compelling way, and much like the house pulling Cordelia in, it draws you as a reader into its depths of emotion and life opportunities and life matters.
Fern Britton weaves the seascape, the manor house and the power of memories expertly together, creating a highly atmospheric, highly adept and compelling book.

Written between past and present, Cordelia Jago has to confront her ghosts after her ex-husband Johnny Carlisle-Hart leaves her his family home - Wilder Hoo. At first she is reluctant to accept it, determined to sell it and walk away from the negative memories which are invoked the moment she walks through the door. But with support from her long term friend Sammi Hashmi, and a sprinkle of fate, Cordelia stays. There are some great characters here - including her Aunt Rose, someone who supported her through childhood after her mother's tragic death, and Mrs Joy, the indispensable housekeeper at Wilder Hoo, who always seems to be able to anticipate everyone's needs. It's an entertaining read, and set in Cornwall, ticked all the boxes for me. Recommended.

A great slow read, like a huge landscape portrait that you want to take your time over to savour every bit. This was beautifully written with strong characters that the author spent time exploring and giving the emotions and reactions and thus sucked me in. The house that is in disrepair is also a character and the mixing of the different strands is well done. There is pain, family hurt and bruises but also joy and hope sprinkled into the plot. A few kisses, a lifeguard and a bit of royalty makes this a lovely read.

This was an engaging read with an interesting variety of characters. Cordelia ( Delia) is the main character. She had a very loving family growing up with her mum and aunt. I did feel for her in her marriage with dreadful in-laws and her husband with his moods. However, she did have a good friend in Sammy. Her aunt was very supportive and quite a character, who was enjoying her latter years to the full. I loved the descriptions of Cornwall, I could just imagine myself there. Mrs Joy, the housekeeper, was an interesting character, always popping up just when she was needed. I was pleased that this story had a happy and well deserved ending for Delia. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have never read a novel by Fern Britton before but the synopsis of this book was appealing.
Delia, is a middle aged woman who inherits Wilder Hoo, a dilapidated house in Cornwall and from there the story transports you back to Delia's cornish past and childhood growing up on her family farm with her mum Christine and her Aunt Rosie.
The characters of the novel are well rounded, very loveable and interact well to build moments of tension and tenderness throughout the novel. Sammi, the best friend of Delia is a lovely recurring character and acts as her cornerstone to guide her in her emotional decisions. I loved the sense of place in the novel, Wilder Hoo becomes a character in itself, with the book talking to you about it's empty rooms and aching desire to be restored and lived in and the restoration was satisfying hearing about the rooms and how they were being re-furnished.
The "villains" in the novel were archetypal - Harriet the old childhood friend, Jonny the ex husband and Delia's dad but again were well shaped - you loved to hate them!
A lovely, well paced and thoughtful novel which readers of romance, family drama or regionally set stories would enjoy

Cordelia Jago would be happy to never set foot in Wilder Hoo House again. When Delia’s late ex-husband unexpectedly leaves the cottage in her name, she wonders if it is one last cruel joke from beyond the grave.
Determined to quickly sell-up and burry the memories of her past forever, she begins to restore the crumbling beach house brick by brick. With the help of the locals Delia breathes new life into the home, An engaging & enjoyable book, it charts Delia’s life so shifts backwards & forwards in time. I really liked Delia & loved getting to know her, there is also a delightful bunch of secondary characters. There are secrets but there’s also a new beginning. This is an ideal book to while away some hours relaxing outdoors
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
This was a loving read, set in Cornwall. The story is told in the past and present.
Delia receives news that she’s inherited a house, which is in need of a lot of work. But, it also doesn’t hold any happy memories for her.
We read how Delia’s childhood was as she was growing up and everything that happened in her life, she didn’t have an easy life.
But, she’s determined with the help of her friends, some of whom she’s known and some she makes along the way, along with Mrs Joy to bring the house, gardens and outbuildings back to how they used to be.
In doing so Delia finds herself healing from all that’s happened.
I highly recommend this book.

A lovely summer read, set in Cornwall.
Lots of great characters most good, some bad.
Set around an unusual premise, but an enjoyable easy read.
Thanks to Netgalley for an early copy.

Another lovely read from Fern Britton. A heartwarming story with amazing characters.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for this arc

This is very much a book of two parts. Part 1 explores Delia’s early life with her Mum and Auntie Rose, how she met her husband Johnny and was introduced to Wilder Hoo.
Part 2 is the restoration of Wilder Hoo House and Gardens and with the help of family and friends the revitalisation of Delia.
Fern Britton shows her love of Cornwall with beautiful descriptions and an almost travel agency vigour..
I found both parts of the book interesting , but the restoration of the house and gardens grabbed my attention. I would have liked to more details in this area.
Overall an enjoyable summer read.
