*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-arc*

This is a new favourite book of all time, and I was really not expecting it to be. I have had a hit-or-miss relationship with TJR's books in the past, so I was very hesitant when I requested this book on NetGalley, but the premise sounded so intriguing and unique that I thought I would give it a go.

From the very first page of this book, I was so invested in every single character's lives, emotions, and struggles. I went from being a girl who was afraid of flying and never really thought about life in space to someone who was in absolute awe of everything astronaut's do, and wanting to read up on everything space-related. (I will say, if you don't like flying, maybe don't pick this book up just before you go on a flight, cause I did and it made me even more afraid of my flight so I had to pause it until I returned home haha).

At the core of this story, TJR is truly looking at love and the feeling of belonging. She explores this in a multitude of ways, through friendships, through strained familial relationships, through romantic love, through love for the planet, and many other avenues. I feel like this is part of the reason so many people will resonate so strongly with this book, and more importantly with Joan as a main character, because all Joan wants is to be seen for who she truly is and to be accepted for that, and I feel like that is something that so many people can relate to.

The entire cast of characters were beautiful. From little Frances who just wanted someone to stick around and love her, to Griff who was arguably the first person to see and accept Joan for who she was. Even Lydia, who is arguably the most difficult character in the book, I grew to love, as TJR just has such a knack for writing characters in a way that makes you understand their motivations and feelings, even when you don't personally agree with their actions. And of course there's Hank, Donna and Vanessa too, but I don't want to give too much away.

This book made me cry probably more than any other book has. I found myself having to put the book down several times because I was too emotional regarding what was going on, and that to me proves how strong of a storyteller TJR truly is. I personally think this is her strongest work to date, and I can't wait to see everyone's thoughts when this book comes out. This was genuinely a masterpiece, and I know I will be re-reading this many times in the future, and recommending it to literally everyone.

This is the best book I've read all year.

TJR has singlehandedly written a book that will always be in my brain. Vanessa and Joan are so 3D that I refuse to believe they're not real. Go into this book blind like I did, and you'll have the best time of your life. I loved all the aspects about space, stars, love, religion and family. How sometimes your family isn't blood related, that you can love someone or something so much that it hurts, that your life doesn't end when you think it does. There's so much in this book that I could talk about it forever.

If you haven't read any TJR, this is your chance to experience something only few books have made me feel before.

Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me a copy, I loved it!

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this arc of Atmosphere! What a phenomenal ride. This book is about love in its purest and rarest forms and I dare all the homophobes to read this. TJR writes love, breathes love and merges love. Some of the sentences are so perfect up until their last letter. I am blown away by this. Absolutely, in every way.

Taylor Jenkins Reid does it again! Atmosphere is a beautifully written story set in the 1980s, following Joan—a fierce and inspiring woman training to become an astronaut. The dual timeline between her past and present life at Houston is woven with a love story so moving, it had me in tears. TJR’s characters always feel so real, and Joan is no exception. A heartfelt, five-star read.

Unbelievably beautiful and completely heartbreaking. A great hook that pulls you into the story, and keeps the tension high throughout. Joan and Vanessa's relationship was so well drawn and equal parts romantic and devastating. I raced through the story and was absolutely bereft to leave Joan behind when I finished. So gorgeous and captivating and special - will be recommending to everyone who comes near!

Nothing seems to hit quite like a Taylor Jenkins Reid when it comes to emotions and hidden relationships & Atmosphere hit just the same. A truly wonderful read packed with nostalgia for the 80s, strong female characters & a brilliant plot. A huge 5 stars from me & I can't wait to see what the author writes next

Atmosphere was an incredible love story, in so many ways. Set against the backdrop of the 1980s Space Shuttle programme, Atmosphere follows Joan as she joins the NASA space programme, among the first women to do so.

It was a story about friendship and love and fighting against injustice and it was beautifully written. Incredibly emotional and profound, I would highly recommend.

I was utterly thrilled to be approved for the new Taylor Jenkins Reid - my thanks to the publisher & NetGalley. You know you’re going to be in expert hands, with a gripping, race-through-the-pages, emotional read.
And so it was in this case, set in the surprising and rather unusual (for romantic novels) world of NASA and rocket ships (very timely of TJR!) There’s quite a lot of technical jargon at the beginning, but the author's love for her subject shines through.
Joan and Vanessa are trainees at NASA, and the story is told primarily from the point of view of scientist Joan. Her backstory is intertwined with the story of a space mission, so we gradually come to learn the history of the astronauts on the rocket.
I hope it’s not too much of a spoiler to say the central romance is a homosexual one – and very much not allowed at NASA. It was fascinating to be reminded of the views of the time, and it’s astonishing to realise how far we’ve come in four decades - and what we’re in danger of slipping back to in the current climate.
Overall I would say this wasn’t my favourites TJR novel, purely because of how much I love some of the others, but it was still an exceptional read.

Cinematic in scope, Atmosphere blew me away. Subtitled ‘a love story’ and so it is, in so many ways; romantic love, friendship, family and a passion for the stars. Joan and Vanessa meet when training to be astronauts with NASA. At this point I thought it would lose me, I can’t say space travel has ever done much for me, but I may need to revise that point of view as I’m looking at the night sky longingly and mulling over all the philosophical moments of the book. I was fully invested, desperate to read on and I loved the evolution of Joan’s character, who simultaneously grew, yet stayed true to who she was too. I loved Evelyn Hugo, but I love Atmosphere even more.

Yeah I'm going to need a tv/movie adaptation of this like right now. Taylor. Jenkins. Reid. You've done it again! I'm not a crier but man did I ugly cry at this. The pain in my chest! This has left me with a major book hangover.

Taylor Jenkins Reid's writing is once again phenomenal. I just want to bathe in it. This was different to any of her works I've previously read but at the same time it had the same voice, atmosphere and realism that her other works have. That gorgeous writing has made Taylor Jenkins Reid an auto buy author for me.

I really didn't enjoy this book to begin with, to the point I almost gave up. I struggled to keep track of who was who and found the technical / space information too overwhelming. I had to really push through.
I picked it back up a month later and at around 40% through things clicks. Despite the horrendous start I can't not give this book five stars, the last few chapters were so powerful and full of love, I cried multiple times....wow it packs a punch.

Wowee, Taylor Jenkins Reid does it again! This one gave me major Evelyn Hugo vibes - not just in the pace, but in the beautifully flawed and captivating characters. It started off a bit slow (first 20–30%), but I’m so glad I stuck with it because the last 20% had my heart in my mouth. Totally worth the emotional ride 🚀.

I loved this book - the main character was great and I loved the story of the women who worked in NASA and wanted to be astronauts.
There was tension with the ISS and what happened at the start of the book but I loved how it went back in time to explain how they had gotten to that point.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Taylor Jenkins Reid gives us another engaging read with a well thought out cast of characters that really takes us through it on an emotional rollercoaster, I was not expecting the relationship between Joan and Vanessa but it really enhanced the book for me.
I did go through far many tissues at end of the book so you can definitely say this book made my emotions fly high and made me want to feel my own ‘low-Earth orbit’.
Some of the more technical space jargon went over my head but at its core this was still a story that I was able to devour quite quickly.
It’s not my favourite book by her but I would still very much recommend it.

I was absolutely amazed by what I learnt about space in this book. I wasn't particularly interested in space, but now I am! I loved the warmth brought to the characters. A beautiful, tragic read. An experience I can recommend to anyone.

I loved this from start to finish. Fantastic story, great plot. You can tell the author has done her research into NASA and space. Loved the mixture of characters and some of the heartbreaking character stories. All over brilliant and can't wait to recommend this book to others.

I really loved this book! I was thrown initially by how different it was to TJR's others (not as glamourous, outside of a Hollywood setting, etc) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The relationships between the main characters and her loved ones are written so beautifully, you can't help but fall in love with them all.

As a huge Taylor Jenkins Reid fan and a giant space nerd I could not have been more excited when I heard her next novel was going to be a love story set against the backdrop of Astronauts training at NASA.

The book opens with an author's note explaining how she fell in love with the stars whilst researching and writing Atmosphere, and you can truly feel that love throughout. Whilst this is being pitched as a love story, I would say that the love between Jo and Vanessa is equal to the love you can feel TJR had for the world she was writing - making even the most heartwrenching moments beautiful to read.

The way this book is written - bouncing between the present and the past that lead there - has you utterly captivated from the very first page. It feels like a privilege to read Jo's story and see how she grows into the incredible woman we see in the present. And yes, you will cry. Yes, the more you know about the characters the harder you will cry. Yes, I sobbed so hard I had to take a break because I couldn't read through my tears. But I can promise you that you will want to thank Taylor Jenkins Reid for the pain she has put you through - as every second of heartache was worth it.

The most romantic and heartwrenching spin on Apollo 13!
