The author mentions in his authors note that the original indie publisher he used called this story "weird." And weird it most definitely is, but in the most wonderful way!
Klune has such a unique ability at writing children. Especially children filled with foibles and quirks that, rather than irritate (although they often irritate one of the main characters at the start), just endear the reader towards them. Art, Artemis Darth Vader, is no different. I adored her and charm before Nate did.
There's also his special trait at writing found families and love in a way that is believable and wonderful to see. I want to find myself accepted and loved by these characters because I love and accept them for who they are. It's a special quality for an author to achieve, especially over so many uniquely different characters.
This story is action packed, and often felt like a rollercoaster. I never knew what to expect next. It was fun, as well as hilariously funny, ditsy and cute, paranormal and human, and as I said, weird in the most wonderful way.
That closing paragraph tore at my heartstrings, not with sorrow but pride. So much pride for these characters and all they achieved together. They will live in my heart for a long time to come.
The audiobook was fantastic! The narrator perfectly captured every character, ever emotion, every reaction better than I could have imagined! I implore everyone to listen to this audiobook for extra charm, humour and immersion into the story.

Honestly, TJ Klune can do no wrong! I absolutely loved this! The House in the Cerulean Sea was one of my most memorable reads of last year and I dare say The Bones Beneath My Skin surpass it! The found family and queer love was as always perfection. It's about friendship, love and being an outsider. I loved every minute I spent on the story and highly, highly, highly recommend it!

"The Bones Beneath My Skin" is a phenomenally great, heartwarming (and heartbreaking) book about the relationship between Nate, Alex, and Artemis Darth Vader. The dynamics between the trio are fantastic from the very beginning, and it was a joy to follow the characters from start to finish.
Although the story might seem a bit far-out, it doesn't feel strange at all when you read it. The story is about love, friendship, belonging, and togetherness, and it was incredibly touching and beautiful to read about everything the characters go through together.
There were several touching scenes, but also scenes that made me chuckle. This book is warm, cozy, sad, and action-packed—all at once. The epilogue made me unbearably happy. I am so incredibly glad I read this book!
The story is beautifully narrated and works very well as an audiobook. Kirt Graves has a very pleasant voice and reads the lines with great expression and well-done voices that are not over the top.

TJ Klune is a master at pulling off high stakes, yet cozy storylines.
Don’t read the summary. Don’t read other reviews if they give you a summary, just know that this is, at its basics, about a quirky young girl, a man who would protect her with his life, and a man who is looking for quiet after a personal tragedy who finds them living in his cabin.
Still reading?
Okay, so Artemis Darth Vader and Alex seem odd. First of all, Art is curious about everything. She asks about everything. She has weird mannerisms. Alex is cold and his answer to everything is to point a gun in your face.
There is more to the plot, but I don’t want to give anything else away. Especially as it takes a good chunk of the book to get to the meat of it.
This still had humour, but less so than Klune’s other books. This was more action-packed and almost like a movie playing out.
I loved Art. Klune is great at writing hopeful characters who see the best in the world despite their circumstances.
Also, she loves bacon. An unhealthy amount.
<b>"I don't... know?"
"Oh. That's okay. You know how to make toast. That's good enough for me."
Nate didn't think he'd ever received such simple validation in his life.
The toast popped up.

Big red flag for me: a random very intense sec scene. The romance was introduced in the last 100 pages and this sex scene felt so forced in and out of tone for the rest of this book.
I would recommend it to a wide range of readers had it not been for this. I don’t want my gran on my friend’s younger sister reading something quite as graphic as that in a book otherwise so sweet and lighthearted.
The ending was good but didn’t fully satisfy me, but I won’t go into details here!!!
First half was definitely four stars.🌟

I did not realize until now that the first publication date of The Bones Beneath My Skin was in 2018. After reading few books by T.J. Klune, I've come to the conclusion that they share many similarities. If you like his style, you will find this is a good book. I’m also pleased to see that Klune's writing and twists in stories have improved in his newer works.
Thanks to Macmillan UK Audio and NetGalley for ARC, I have given my honest review.

It goes without saying that I loved this as TJ Klune can do no wrong in my eyes! I’d say this is probably the darkest story of his which I’ve read, but it still has that classic TJ humanity and heart that I adore.
I don’t want to give too much away, because whilst you might guess what’s going on fairly early on in the story, I loved the element of surprise to it all - to begin with I almost thought it was going to be a totally different story and a bit of a murder mystery! What I will say is that it’s quite a slow build up in getting to know our core characters, and the early interactions between Nate, Alex and Artemis were some of my favourite moments in the story - there’s all of that classic TJ humour and a bit of grumpy/sunshine going on with Alex and Art that’s very entertaining! But then after all this slow build up, there’s suddenly all this action and violence that’ll have you blitzing through to see what happens!
As with all of his novels, it’s a story about acceptance, love, kindness and not being afraid of those who are ‘other’. There’s a queer love story and bit of spiciness, but mostly it feels like a story of found family and friendship, and it shares so many important messages about what it is to be human. Whilst it would probably come last in my rankings of his books (purely because it had more of a sci-fi than fantasy feel), I still absolutely adored it and it’s still getting all the five star treatment - make this man president please!!

Thank you macmillan uk audio and netgalley for the chance to listen to this audiobook.
The Bones Beneath My Skin is a novel apparently taking place in the same universe as the Green Creek series, but instead of being a supernatural fantasy, I think it can be considered more of a scifi book.
In its essence though, it's a story about found family, diversity, discrimination and love in all its forms, like all the author's work.
I was hoping for the narrator to be the same as the Green Creek series and it is in fact the same so if you, like me, enjoyed the Green Creek audiobooks, you will probably enjoy this one too.
Overall the book was good and it has some very nice moments, I do recommend you give it a chance especially if you are a fan of Klune's, but for me it is not as good as some of his other novels, personally I couldn't connect with story and characters the same way.
Story: 3.5/5

This will be a very long review—half of it will be me singing endless praises for TJ Klune. So buckle up, and thank you for reading! If you make it to the end, applause to you! 🎉👏
The Bones Beneath My Skin is the latest masterpiece from TJ Klune, releasing on February 4, 2025—mark your calendars! 📅✨ I am in absolute awe.
I’ve been a devoted TJ Klune fan since 2020, the year I rediscovered the joy of reading, and no author has impacted me the way he has. He hasn’t just entered my top three authors—he’s dethroned every other one, and I am not ashamed to say it. 💖
I tandem-read this book using both an ARC and the ALC provided by Pan Macmillan (thank you for making my year!). It was the perfect way to kickstart 2025, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
The story begins with Nate—a man who is jobless, parentless, friendless, and overwhelmingly lonely. Deciding he needs some time to reflect, he heads to his family’s mountain cottage, the only possession he has left aside from his truck. He’s hoping the isolation will help him figure out what to do next.
But life has other plans. When he arrives, he finds a brooding, quiet (and admittedly attractive) man pointing a gun at him... along with a child. This isn’t just any child—she’s precocious, eloquent, and undeniably weird. And in that moment, Nate can’t help but wonder what he did to deserve this mess of a life.
This book is perfection. 🌟
From the unforgettable characters to Klune’s signature writing style and the emotional depth of the plot, everything was pure magic.
🎧 Kirt Graves delivers a performance that’s nothing short of extraordinary. His voice captivated me during the Green Creek series, and once again, it creates the safe, magical space that only the combination of his narration and Klune’s words can achieve.
Klune’s writing is, without question, one of my favorite styles. I don’t typically enjoy third-person narration, but he makes it so personal, sweet, and entertaining that I couldn’t critique it even if I tried.
The plot unfolds beautifully. The fantasy elements emerge gradually, and while you can sense where the magic might lie, you’re never prepared for the emotional bombshell Klune will drop. As always, his writing is infused with reflective, profound, and jaw-dropping dialogues that feel like revelations.
The characters, though—they’re the true heart of this story.
Nate is all of us. He’s confused, messy, and clueless, but also curious, kind, and endearingly human.
Alex starts as the archetypal brooding, quiet MMC. But as the story progresses, Klune masterfully peels back his layers, revealing a man fiercely devoted to protecting those he loves.
Artemis Dark Vader. Oh, Artemis. She’s easily one of the best characters ever written. A 10-year-old girl who is witty, innocent, and curious, but also wise, perceptive, and incredibly powerful.
When this book is finally out in the world, I hope everyone will embrace it as much as I did. This is a masterpiece. 🖤✨ No one can—or ever will—convince me otherwise.

T.J.Klune creates these wonderful found families that you never tire of. A unique premise for a story told brilliantly. I listened to the audiobook of this and really enjoyed the narration.

A slow paced romance that shows how we can create our own family and how love can mean more than anything else. Alex, Nate and Artemis Darth Vader will make you fall in love with them, overcoming all the odds. I won’t repeat the synopsis here as I don’t want to spoil anyone, but if you like quirky characters and a gay love story, this is one for you. Full disclosure there is one fairly descriptive sex scene.
I received an ARC and audiobook copy of this via NetGalley and the publishers Tor, in return for an unbiased review.

Maybe it’s a bit too soon for a reread but when I got approved for the audiobook too, I just had too. Especially since it’s Kirt Graves narrating again, I had to listen immediately.
The second time around was somehow even beter, revisiting the characters instead of meeting them for the first time, noticing details I hadn’t before and being more prepared for the obligatory hard crushing TJ Klune is so great at.
Even prepared for what’s to come, it was not enough to hold my tears. I sobbed even harder than the first time. It felt like I already knew the characters for ages and that Nate and Alex have been married for years.
So I give this “action movie in book form “ yet again, 5 stars.

This is a high 4 for me. On one hand I’m not into sci fi alien stories but on the other hand TJ Kline is an amazing author with a talent for telling stories in the most beautiful ways.
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read and review.
