One of those pocket books that only lead you to ask "how flipping big are everyone else's pockets?!", but where the description certainly seems to apply. There's not a heck of a lot to this, but we have 60 butterflies here in the UK and only need concern ourselves with three dozen of them. Here we even get a few moths of the day-flying temperament tacked on.
But what we do have is very friendly and amenable. Wonderful artworks are present for all the insects, of course, and opposite is a page succinctly telling us the basics about their habits and habitats – which plants they specifically prefer, when they fly, how often they may produce broods, what we might most easily see them do… You get a line to itemise when and where you got to tick them all off as a spotter, and scattered throughout this are a few pages of extra information about spotting them, and what our changing climate is meaning to the order as a whole. All told it's a book that may seem a bit too slender on first glance, but shows its warmth for the subject so gently you could easily get hooked. A great 'my first spotter's guide' title, for all but the youngest of ages.

My young Grandaughter was absolutely glued to this book last night. She was the quietest she has ever been and now wants to do nothing but look for butterflies and moths. The illustrations are a delight and make identification much easier than with some photographs.

The Butterfly Spotter’s Guide by Matthew Oates was a beautiful book and so useful I had to purchase it.
It is full of beautiful photos of butterflies, I just loved looking through this book especially as it is jammed packed with so much wonderful information on how to get more wildlife in your gardens, how to help the wildlife etc.
This small pocket book tells you everything you need to know about Britain’s butterflies. Whether you’re a beginner or an enthusiast, you will want to spot all of these winged wonders. A wonderful find.
Thank you NetGalley and Part of National Trust for my ARC.

This is a beautiful and useful book. I love that as well as the in-depth information on butterfly species it also has sections on how to spot them, how to photograph them and encouraging them to your garden. A must read for any nature lover.

A lovely book, full of beautiful illustrations, with descriptions of the butterflies found in Britain.
Lots of interesting background information and facts about butterflies alongside the pictures.

Such a beautifully illustrated book. This is a great butterfly spotters guide, with information on many different butterflies. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I wish I were gifted this when I was a child.
This is an interesting and illustrated guide with useful information, and some cute surprises.
A book to share with your child and across generations.

Very informative book, explains all about butterflies and their habitats, lifespans, flight seasons and broods, courtship and mating, and explains what the purpose of the book is, following on with different butterlies and a bit about them and a picture for easy identification, and when and where is best to see them. I also love the addition at the bottom of the page where you can record where and when the reader saw this particular butterfly. There are also odd pages throughout the butterfly sections giving hints and tips eg. photographing butterflies, which is a nice edition.
Easy to follow and beautifully clear illustrations. I would love to be considered for any hard copies of any nature / gardening books, as I live out in a village in royal wootton bassett and there is a multitude of wildlife here (and my wonderful garden birds) so would love to make some reels. Thank you
