Krabat has some vivid dreams of a mill house and when he hears a voice telling him to go, he feels the pull and can't help but leave the only home he's known. He finds himself a slave to master, and along with 11 others, he is set to work. He can't leave or escape so he endured it. He finds out the master is a sorcerer and they are instructed once a week in the use of black magic. Krabat isn't like the rest of them, they use the magic often for entertainment and are designed to the evil. Krabat wants to use it to escape, but can he?

This was quite good!! The author builds the atmosphere right from the start and you are pulled into the world be created. You are immersed in Krabats life and follow him through figuring out if the black magic and the life it involves is actually what he wants. It's not till his friends start to mysteriously die that Krabat knows he has to leave. Plus his love for the girl in the village helps. He has to keep her safe!

In all, this was an enjoyable read. It's translated from German so I did feel like some of the words were a little stilted but overall it translated well.
