Did not receive/read in time due to technical error on kindle/tablet. Not having left feedback has due to error has impacted my shelves. Leaving 4 stars.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. It is the first in a trilogy but could be read as a stand alone. Not everything is tied up at the end but enough of the major things are that you could stop if you wanted to. On the long side and something was just missing, but I can't put my finger on what. Not a bad read if you like dystopian fiction.

I tried very hard to like this book, and there were some things I did like (the world-building, the depth of some characters, the writing) but it felt too 'young adult' with way too much dialogue and large swathes of nothing much happening.

Although the premise initially sounded intriguing I soon found many faults - if it was known that a twin being seriously injured or dying would cause the same to happen to the other twin, surely society would make certain that both twins were looked after? Also, the idea of the parents being happy to banish one of their twins at a young age just seemed ridiculous. Perhaps as a mother of twins myself, it hit a raw nerve. Perhaps these things are explained in the following two books of the series but I'm sorry to say I won't be continuing with it.

Surprisingly good! At first I wasn’t sold on the concept but as the rhythm of the storytelling drew me in that didn’t matter as much. A lot happened for it to just be one book and just the opening of the overall story. Fast moving, interesting, great characters. Overall a good story.

This was an interesting concept for a YA story. The MC was slightly too annoying for my taste but The prose was written well and was overall enjoyable for a quick, fun read
