Nina likes working the night shift. She can study in the quiet and on her own. Usually no interruptions. Well, not until this fateful night. Things start happening after a man brings a suitcase in. I couldn’t stop reading it my heart racing. Brilliant.

I really enjoyed The Night Shift. It was full of suspense, drama, and surprising twists.
I read it in one sitting. It was an adrenaline packed thriller, I found it hard to put down.

Gemma's writing drew me in immediately. It was a tense read, and I really had no idea what was going to happen.
I liked Nina, but sometimes I found her decision-making skills severely lacking, with her doing things that made me cringe, muttering about her stupidity. That is the only criticism I have, though. It's well worth the read.

I highly recommend it.

4 stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to Netgalley, Boldwood Books, and Gemma Rogers for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Nina has a dream of becoming a doctor and she’s studying medicine. She has her own health challenge as she’s diabetic. There’s good diabetes awareness via Nina’s story.

She works at a 24 hour storage company. I wasn’t sure how enthralling this was going to be, and Gemma Rogers makes even a storage company atmospheric. I was curious as what each customer would do. I found one man especially creepy…

Thanks to Gemma Rogers. This is my eighth novel by Gemma Rogers. Her books are always a hit with me. She’s a go-to thriller author for me.

4 stars.

Thanks to Gemma Rogers and Boldwood Books for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers was so good!! If you like mystery, thriller, high stakes, tension, action packed stories then you will love this book.

Gemma has a way of writing books that keep you hooked from the beginning. Nina is working her overnight shift at a Storage Queen. On her overnight shift a man walks in with a big suitcase, she doesn’t get a good feeling about him and she soon learns that feeling is right. Things happen pretty quickly, and it goes from weird to scary. She gets locked in the storage facility, with no lights, locked doors, a man with a suitcase that has blood coming out of it, and needing her diabetes medicine. She is locked in and has no way of getting out or calling for help. There were so many twists and turns in this book and I could not put it down because I had to know what was in that suitcase!! Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.

Gemma Rogers' 'The Night Shift' promises and delivers a pulse-pounding, cat-and-mouse thriller set over one long and lethal twelve-hour shift. The action revolves around Nina, a student at university who works the night shift at a self-storage unit to pay her way through college. In search of solitude and a quiet environment in which to work, her routine is disrupted when a suspicious man appears with a large suitcase, setting off a terrifying experience that will challenge her strength and ingenuity.

Rogers is a master at generating a sense of tension right from the opening scenes. The deserted layout of the Storage Queen center, with its black hallways and padlocked units, becomes a character itself, heightening the sense of exposure and suffocation.

The author makes skillful use of the time constraint of a single night to generate suspense, so that each creak and shadow appears threatening.
The full-ahead pace of 'The Night Shift' is cutthroat. As soon as the initial tension has been established, the story is rarely in relaxation mode, presenting Nina with obstacle after obstacle. This is a twisty-turny tale, complete with twists and turns that are occasionally predictable but tend to keep the reader guessing until the final page. The sense of claustrophobia that comes with following Nina through this ever-crises-ridden situation is wonderfully achieved, making it a genuinely thrilling read.

Nina herself is a strong protagonist. She's intelligent and resourceful, and also convincingly vulnerable when threatened. Her refusal to give up and fight back, no matter what the odds are against her, makes her easy to sympathize with. The addition of her illness (diabetes) provides another level of tension and realness to her plight.

Although the close concentration on one place and time period helps to build suspense, a few readers may find some of the plot points slightly repetitive or wonder at the total believability of all that occurs. But for those who want a quick, suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat thriller, these will not detract much from the overall pleasure.
Overall, 'The Night Shift' is a solidly constructed and highly entertaining thriller that makes excellent use of its limited setting and countdown ticking away to build a genuinely suspenseful read. Gemma Rogers has produced a page-turner that will have you gripping the last page until the very end, which makes it a good bet for anyone who enjoys the likes of Shari Lapena and Lisa Jewell.

Strengths:
Very good at conjuring up tension and suspense.
Gripping and fast-paced storyline.
Tenacious and interesting protagonist.
Claustrophobic and atmospheric atmosphere.
A lot of twists to keep the reader interested.
Potential Weaknesses:
A few plot twists may be somewhat predictable or less believable.
The closed-in environment may become tiresome to some readers.
In general, 'The Night Shift' is a good thriller that lives up to its billing of a tense and thrilling read. If you want a book that will keep you up late into the night, this one is well worth a look.

I’ve read quite a few of this authors books and enjoyed them but struggled with this one slightly. It started off well and grabbed my attention but felt it was quite repetitive and boring in the middle. I did however like the ending

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers is an entertaining, twisty read that kept me turning the pages, even if it took a little while to get fully into the story. The setup has a strong cat-and-mouse feel, with tension building steadily as the plot unfolds. There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing, and once the pace picks up, it’s hard to put down.

That said, I found the second half veered slightly into less believable territory, which pulled me out of the story a bit. While I enjoyed the ride overall, this one wasn't my favourite of Gemma Rogers’ books—but it still delivered a solid dose of suspense and drama.

The Night Shift is a gripping read that pulls you in with its eerie setting and slow-building tension. The idea of a quiet night shift turning into a nightmare is simple but effective, and the sense of isolation adds to the suspense. While some twists are predictable, the story keeps you engaged, and the main character’s fear feels real. It’s a solid thriller that’s worth a read if you enjoy tense, claustrophobic suspense.

The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers is a tense and gripping psychological thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The story follows the protagonist, who works a night shift at Storage Queen, a seemingly uneventful job that offers the solitude and quiet she needs to study while supporting her university degree. However, everything changes when a mysterious man arrives, dragging a large suitcase behind him.

From the moment the man walks in, the atmosphere shifts, and the protagonist’s instincts tell her that something is dangerously wrong. What follows is a harrowing ordeal that unfolds throughout the 12-hour shift, with suspense building steadily as the night wears on. The sense of isolation and vulnerability that comes with working alone during unsociable hours amplifies the tension, making for an intense, fast-paced read.

Rogers masterfully keeps readers guessing, blending moments of calm with sudden bursts of suspense. The protagonist’s emotional journey—from the initial unease to the desperate fight for survival—adds depth to the thriller’s fast-moving plot. The setting, confined within the storage facility, creates a claustrophobic atmosphere that heightens the stakes and keeps the reader fully immersed in the unfolding drama.

The Night Shift is a perfect read for fans of suspenseful thrillers, offering a blend of psychological tension, unexpected twists, and high stakes. Rogers has crafted a story that proves one night shift can indeed be deadly, leaving readers breathless until the very last page.
