This is the second book I have read by Gemma Rogers, and she is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors. This book was such a rollercoaster ride. It was relentless with the heart racing, edge of the seat storyline that had me riveted from start to finish. There were so many points when I thought the story was almost over, everything was going to be ok, and Nina was going to be safe and escape this nightmare night shift, but nope, my heart fell to my feet again when there was another twist in the story. Cannot recommend this book enough to any reader who loves to be taken on a nerve-racking journey.

The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers is a well-written, locked room style thriller that is fast-paced and twisty.

Nina is studying to be a doctor but to make ends meet she works at Storage Queen, a 24-hour storage facility. A twelve hour night shift is usually a time where Nina can study for exams or even catch up on her sleep. But this night shift is different. A man arrives and is dragging a very heavy suitcase behind him. And is that blood trailing behind? Trying to maintain her blood sugar (she is diabetic) while hiding and trying to find a way out of the facility, will Nina be able to survive the night shift?

I really like this novel! The pace is fast and the plot is well executed. I absolutely love Nina's character! It was very interesting to see how having diabetes affected Nina as it's not really something that is in these types of books. Definitely adding more books by Gemma Rogers to my TBR list!

Thank you to NetGalley, Gemma Rogers, and Boldwood Books for this ARC. Publication date was March 6th 2025.

Nina’s working the overnight shift at Storage Queen when a man walks in dragging a giant suitcase—and instantly, the alarm bells start ringing. Things go from weird to terrifying fast, and suddenly she’s trapped in a maze of dark hallways, locked doors, and gut-level fear. What’s in the suitcase? Who really is this man? And is that blood trailing behind the path of the suitcase? How far will Nina go to survive the longest night of her life?

Creepy, intense, and full of high-stakes tension, particularly with the challenges of Nina's diabetes, this one had me holding my breath and flipping pages like mad.

Thank you to NetGalley, Gemma Rogers, and Boldwood Books for the chance to read this twisty, cat and mouse, engrossing ARC!

The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers
Fast paced lock in style book following Nina, a new college student studying to be a doctor complete a 12 hour night shift at Storage Queen - a 24hr storage facility.
What is normally a boring shift where she could fall asleep becomes a nightmare, being hunted down the hallways of the storage company.
Likes:
- face paced
- multiple POVs
- time stamped chapters (as if giving a police report)
- insight into diabetes
- I could see this becoming a movie as it was written in a way I could picture it in my head
- happy ending (but not diminishing trauma)
I made the mistake of starting this book in the middle of one of my night shifts and gave myself the creeps.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Author for giving me a copy of this book

Nina is a medical student who works the night shift in a self storage company. She always feel safe working at night; guests need a keypad code to get in and she has a panic button under her desk. The night gives her a chance to study for exams until one night when a man arrives late at night dragging a heavy suitcase. Nina spends the rest of her shift running and hiding from a man who is trying to cover up something that is much more involved than Nina could imagine. On top of her having to hide and try to find a way out, she is also a type one diabetic and must find a way to maintain her blood sugar as the night progresses.

This one was pretty exciting as Nina used every bit of her strength to find a solution to getting out of the storage unit. At times other people are arriving and she has to either try to escape them or in the case of her friends, protect them from the people who will do anything to keep their secrets. I learned a lot about diabetes as well as the ins and outs of working at a self storage unit and I enjoyed having a smart, resourceful main character. I was rooting for Nina to escape the entire time and thought this was an original premise with a great plot. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a copy of this ARC for review.

Arc review:

The Night Shift is a gripping, atmospheric, 'locked in' thriller that pulls you in right from the start. With an eerie, isolated setting and a constant sense of unease, Gemma Rogers delivers a fast-moving, suspenseful read that kept me hooked.

The setting sets us up for unease straight away and Rogers does an incredible job of building claustrophobic tension, making even mundane interactions feel filled with potential danger. The atmosphere alone had me on edge!

The story moves quickly, which is normally my preference for thrillers, and I found myself flying through chapters, eager to see what would happen next. There’s little room for filler, which keeps the tension high from start to finish.

Nina, our protagonist, was relatable and well-developed, and I enjoyed following her as she tried to navigate this tense and unpredictable night. Her decisions felt realistic, which made the stakes even higher.

The final chapters delivers plenty of action and suspense, tying things up in a way that felt earned and well-paced. It wasn’t a mind-blowing twist, but it was solid and satisfying.

Overall, The Night Shift is a tense, well-written thriller with an eerie setting, strong suspense, and a fast-moving plot. While it follows some familiar thriller beats, the atmosphere and tension make it stand out. A great pick for fans of quick, edge-of-your-seat reads!

Thank you NetGalley for the arc!

I did love the location ,which by its very nature set the locked in scenario very well. The style of the book was good too with short sharp chapters Nina was not my favourite Gemma Roger’s character and as the author explained she was based loosely on her daughter I did wonder if this meant she couldn’t bring herself to give her much edge.
The middle of the tale lost the energy and tension of the start and I though5 the ending was insipid. There were a couple of characters you could have done without as they added so little but a deserved four stars overall from me.

The book started well with good buildup and suspense. There were some plot holes that didn’t come to fruition, like Sasha being pregnant and why was Laura even there when she did next to nothing. The characters I really had no attachment with, Dom and Laura could have been murdered and I wouldn’t have cared because they weren’t built up enough. The main character also was so idiotic despite the book saying over and over that she was smart. The pace was also not consistent because there were too many plot points and it started to drag near the middle. There were parts that I really liked, the setting was great and I will definitely remember this book when I go to a storage unit.

Thank you net galley for the opportunity for reviewing this book.

This is a creepy read that pulls readers in from the start. The short chapters keep the pace active, which is perfect to keep readers actively engaged. I enjoyed the multiple POVs, too. If you like cat and mouse or locked room thrillers, this is one to check out. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Night Shift - Gemma Rogers

Absolutely relentless!

I feel drained having read this in 2 sittings…..cleverly written, the pace and intrigue doesn’t let up from the get-go.

Classic stuff from Gemma - a game of cat and mouse that leaps from one dramatic situation to another…..just remind me to stick to day shifts at work and I think I’ll be ok! 🤣

Here’s to the next book Gemma…..keep ‘em coming!

A fast paced edgy thriller from Gemma Jones. This one definitely had me on the edge of my seat and I struggled to put it down.
I really liked the FMC and the villain/s were believable. Who knew a 12 hour shift could be so intense and frightening.
A recommended read for anyone that likes a real page turner of a book. I’d definitely read more from Gemma.

Five more books and I will have devoured Rogers entire back catalogue of books. The Night Shift is my favourite to date.

The plot spans across the duration of Nina's night shift at Storage Queen, where twelve hours of boredom suddenly turns into twelve deadly hours...

It's narrated from multiple POV and the pace is fast, frantic and had my pulse pounding. There are some great plot twists and unexpected turns throughout and a great cast of flawed characters.

Brilliant book, thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers is a gripping thriller that delivers a relentless sense of tension from the very first page. The novel follows Gina, a woman just trying to get through her routine night shift—until things take a terrifying turn.

Rogers masterfully crafts an atmosphere of unease, pulling readers into Gina’s increasing paranoia and fear. The eerie setting amplifies the suspense, making the reader feel as trapped as the protagonist. The pacing is tight, and just when you think you know where the story is headed, Rogers throws in a jaw-dropping twist that leaves you questioning everything.

With well-drawn characters, a chilling premise, and a rollercoaster of suspense, The Night Shift is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. It’s a book that keeps you hooked, flipping pages late into the night—just be prepared for a few sleepless hours afterward.

Terror at the warehouse!!
Nina showed incredible tenacity and determination to get through her experience!
I was gripping my reader as each chapter blended into the next.
I wasn’t sure how Nina would get out of the jams she was in and it wreaked havoc on my nerves!
The lesson of this thriller is avoid working nights at storage units!!
Nina’s situation is complicated by her medical condition which is based on the author’s own daughter so that added an important dimension to the plot.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Night Shift' by Gemma Rogers.

I absolutely LOVED this fast paced, gritty and unputdownable psychological thriller filled with emotions and twits!!! Yet another massive success from this brilliant queen of crime!

This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all making your heart pound and you constantly second guessing.

Another huge success by the fantastic Gemma!!! Any time I see a book by this brilliant author I just know I am going to love it without even reading the synopsis first and she has never let me down!! This book had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter that chapter ended on a cliff-hanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! This kept on happened over and over until before I knew it I had devoured the whole book in one sitting!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this in the morning and finished it at approx. 2pm, reading it in one sitting. In this gripping book we are transported to 'Storage Queen', a 24 hour accessible storage unit, in Crawley where we meet night worker 21 year old Nina. Nina has diabetes type 1 and has to take great care of her blood sugar levels. However, she is determined not to let it control her life and to become a doctor in order to help others like herself. The job is perfect for her as she doesn't see many people, can study and do her university work while saving up money for a home of her own. She has just split up with her boyfriend Dom as she refuses to go on a 6 month sabbatical to travel due to her education and finances and he was not happy that she wasn't willing to come with him. When she arrives for her shift she makes sure she has her food and drink as well as snacks ready to keep on top of her insulin levels. When a man arrives carrying a very heavy suitcase to a unit she does not think much of it at first and just wants him to hurry and leave so she can concentrate on her work. However, after he has been there for a while and still hasn't left she leaves the office to do her checks. She discovers a drop of blood on the floor and hears a scream coming from the building which puts her on edge. However, things go from bad to worse when she notices his vehicle had been there earlier and she had written down the number plate and left it near a card she found by the name of Sasha. After a bathroom break she returns to the office to discover not only has her notepad with the car reg number on it has gone but also the card and the phone. I wont say much more but I will say that what happens leads to a cat and mouse chase where Nina needs to not only survive the night from not only a stranger but from her own body as she has no food and no way to check her sugar levels without her phone which has an app on it to let her know when she needs to eat or inject. Why did the stranger take her phone? Will Nina survive the night? To find out the answers to these questions and much more grab your copy of this page turner today!! I promise that you will not regret it!! With a storyline ram packed with tension, fear, suspense, drama, action, twists and everything you could ask for and much more what are you waiting for?? I absolutely LOVE the fact that this book is set over a 12 hour shift but also the completely unique setting of an isolated storage facility which I have never, ever come across before!!! It is so hard to discover a completely unique storyline let alone setting but Gemma managed to achieve both in this one epic storyline!! The twists and shocks left me mind blown and still thinking about it hours after I put the book down which is definitely a sign of a fantastic author!! It is ram packed with twists, turns and surprises you'll never see coming. I definitely didn't and I have read hundreds of crime and psychological books so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Gemma!!! It is getting harder and harder to surprise me but you managed it in this successful, chilling and page turning psychological thriller!!! Gemma's fantastic and evocative writing skills ensures you are sucked into 'Storage Queen' with Nina feeling your heart pounding and the hair on your arms raise. This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop. The atmosphere and surroundings of Storage Queen is completely isolated, creepy and perfect for this action packed thriller and it does not matter where or when you are reading this book as Gemma transports you there at the turn of a page!! I loved the fantastic ending that left me wanting to pick up more of Gemma's books and get stuck straight in.

Clear your schedules before sinking your teeth into this epic thriller as once you've started you wont be able to stop turning the pages until you've devoured it in one sitting!

Gemma's absolutely fantastic and vivid evocative writing skills brings each of the characters to life and leaves you feeling that you are standing next to them as their story unfolds and lives start to tumble around them. Each of the characters were realistic, unique, well rounded and strong characters which makes it a realistic read. I absolutely loved Nina who is such a strong woman anyway having to live with diabetes 1 but she also fights throughout this book and really is one of the biggest kick butt females I have met in a long time. I don't want to risk saying anything more about how I felt about the characters as I don't want to give anything away to future readers but I will say that I was annoyed, angry, upset, disappointed, disgusted, pleased and more at the different ones for many different reasons!! Gemma really does bring the characters emotions to life and feeds them directly to the reader with her fantastic writing skills. Regardless of whether you love them or hate them they each played their parts perfectly!!!

I want to end my review by saying a huge hank you and congratulations to Gemma on taking such a life changing diagnosis and weaving it into this absolutely heart racing novel. Not only has she made a fantastic book but also helps spread awareness of diabetes type 1. there are still many people who assume a lot of things when it comes to diabetes and we need more authors like Gemma to bring the reality of living with it and the facts about it into people's lives and awareness. My cousin also has diabetes type one and I am so proud of how she has coped with it from a young age. She has not let it define her and has managed to become a qualified dentist even with her struggles. Well done Kara, Love you!

Congratulations Gemma on yet another addictive, chilling, page turning psychological thriller with a I cannot wait to get hooked into your next guaranteed page turner!!

Overall an addictive and gripping emotional rollercoaster of tension, suspense, drama and everything you could want in a gripping thriller!!
