A gripping fast paced action pact psychological thriller. Loved every minute with all the twists and turns.

I've read books by this author before, so I was really excited to read this novel. An intriguing premise and it moved along at a pretty fast pace, but it just didn't hit great for me. Loved the main character and her guts! But the villian/s and the plot just didn't satisfy me the way I would have liked. It was a good book, but nothing super special or memorable.

I found this book to be ok. As others have said, Nina, the main character is diabetic. Something that is mentioned in pretty much every chapter. Yes it’s a major part of the plot line but we don’t need reminding quite so much. Some parts of this book are great, gripping and thrilling. Yet other parts are so incredibly slow. It’s all set in one location over the course of twelve hours but I do feel parts went on for far too long. Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the chance to review.

It’s impressive when an author can make an entire book, packed with so much drama, take place in the span of twelve hours. I felt this one on a visceral level, a thriller that had me reading every chance I got. At first I thought it was going to be a short read because I figured such a big climax had to be occurring just before things get all wrapped up for a neat little ending but I was wrong, it was only beginning. Be prepared for a wild ride! Don’t miss out on The Night Shift.

The Night Shift is an atmospheric thriller with lots of tension. I liked the short, easy to read chapters. It was repetitive in parts but overall a gripping read with a great ending.

A fast paced thriller, I could not put this book down where I stayed up late to read more, the suspense and twist and turns created throughout the story were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed

This is different from other thrillers. It takes place in one 12 hour work shift. I loved that! Our girl is trying to manage her diabetes and get through this shift unscathed. Weird stuff is happening and she is pretty vulnerable in there.
Wonderful twists!

Somehow different from other thrillers! It is set in a storage facility and the main character suffers from diabetes. The story happens within the 12 hours of the night shift. I didn't expect some of the twists towards the end. It was too descriptive at time, which made me feel it was longer. Overall, an entertaining read.

This book, was pulse-pounding and a page turner. Gemma Rogers does it again! A cat and mouse game that takes place during the 12 hour night shift in a storage facility, the suspense is ratcheted up high and the hits keep coming, making it impossible to put down. Even when it looks like it is over, she somehow turns it a different way. As always, her twists are unpredictable and fascinating. Jemma Rogers should be lauded for her psychological thrillers like Freida McFadden; she is that good and even better, as her books are more complex. Three cheers for the Night Shift! Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy for my honest review!

Very fast book to read. I really enjoyed that. Mix of characters which fitted well wihin the storyline. Good plot that played out very well. I do enjoy a thriller with suspense thrown in there. But also quite a chilling read which had me on the edge of my chair at times. The book itself was very well written. I really enjoyed reading this book. And would look out for the author in the future.

After reading The Honeymoon in late 2024, I couldn’t wait to dive into The Night Shift—and I’m so glad I did! This book lived in my head rent-free for six days. My heart pounded, sweat gathered, and I couldn’t put it down. If you’re looking for a heart-stopping mystery thriller, The Night Shift is the perfect choice.

I sadly did not enjoy this. It had all the elements I would love, cat and mouse chase, high - octane, survive the night however this one was repetitive and fell flat. There was nearly no character development, and whilst I enjoy a plot driven book this did not appear to have the plot to carry it forward. There were a few good twists towards the end though.

This book had non-stop action from beginning to end. An engaging thriller that grips you and never lets you go.

Nina works in a storage facility to earn money while studying medicine at university.
What should be a routine night starts badly when she breaks up with her boyfriend Dom, but things become increasingly sinister as the hours tick by.
A twisty story with plenty of turns and surprises.

The premise of this book really gripped me... I was expecting an intense roller coaster of a read! I just had to pick it up and give it a try, especially since it is quite a short book.

So firstly, here are the things I enjoyed about this book:
The writing style was quick and easy to read, combine that with short chapters and you’re onto a winner with me! This helped me to stay engaged and excited to read ‘just one more chapter’ while on my commutes.
There are some twists in this book that I didn’t see coming at all! I thought I had it figured out and was a bit disappointed that I’d figured it out so easily but I was wrong! The twist I’m referring to went in the opposite direction to what I was expecting so that is always good!
I also enjoyed reading the odd chapters that were from the perspective of other characters in the story. I’m not sure what they added to the plot but I appreciated that they gave some depth to the antagonist and other smaller characters.

Here is where I had to take some stars away:
I feel like the story could have ‘naturally’ come to an end at about five different points and I would have been able to put the book down satisfied. However, the author decided to keep going and create scenarios/cat and mouse chases that just felt very far fetched. Personally, it is important to me that I can believe what I’m reading could really happen. As a result, I found myself getting frustrated at the protagonist’s numerous missed opportunities. Maybe this was a stylistic choice to make the reader sympathise with the character’s frustration but to me, it was just too much. If the book had ended at the 60-65% mark, it would have been a different rating.

Overall, I rated this book 3⭐️. I enjoyed the plot but the book could have been 50 pages shorter in my opinion.

Thank you Netgalley, Boldwood Books and Gemma Rogers for the eArc of The Nightshift.

This is a medium/fast paced cat and mouse thriller from Gemma Rogers. Having read a few of Gemma's books, Im always drawn to her writing style and really enjoy the characters she decides to build within her narratives. This one had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't put it down. I feel that having a character that is a lone worker on a nightshift at a storage facility adds a claustrophobic and isolating feeling to the narrative. Being hunted in this sort of job role, adds a whole other dimension which I loved.

4.5 stars on Storygraph, 4 stars on other review sites.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC. This was a fast paced thriller with several brief POVs. Nina is diabetic and you’ll never forget it because of how often it’s mentioned. Nina is very annoying and does a lot of stupid things knowing that her blood sugar could hinder her survival. It has some slow sections but definitely had some thrilling aspects. It’s very repetitive though, up and down the stairs, being chased, darkness, hypo, over and over and over again. It became redundant quickly. There was some plot holes and things that didn’t quite add up. The premise was promising but I just feel like it fell short on the delivery. I’d say this was an average book, nothing that really stands out.

[NetGalley Read #24]
4.37 ⭐

"My day had been bad enough before I'd arrived at work, now I was being hunted by some lunatic on steroids."

Excellent!

Starts slow (in a good way), introducing the environment, the characters. Nina Is a solid main character. Learned something about diabetic people which was nice.
The twist midway through the story was very good and nicely set up with an earlier chapter (Sasha's POV).
All-round, great writing.

Recommended. 👍

Notes I took while I was reading:
- Every time I read or watch something British, I learn some weird new phrase: 'give up the ghost'

- Did not expect a second or a third POV. Well written.

- A twist! Midway through the story.

- Wow. This went from crazy to batshit crazy in a few chapters.

- Nice True Romance reference. Like Nina, I did not connect the 'white dude with dreadlocks' to Gary Oldman in that film.

The Night Shift is truly an edge of your seat cat and mouse read.

The story centres around Nina who is beginning her night shift at Storage Queen a 24 hour storage facility. What should usually be a quiet night of studying whilst doing her rounds quickly turns eerie when a suspicious customer walks in with a suitcase. Soon what started as a normal night shift quickly turns into a terrifying cat and mouse game where Nina has to outsmart and keep herself alive from this customer and what they want to keep hidden.

Adding to the suspense we learn Nina is diabetic and throughout the stress of everything that is currently going on loses her phone that has her insulin levels stored on an app. Honestly everything is going from worse to worse and i really rooted for her to come out on top. She is a very strong character that you really hope she'll make it out safe. We also soon learn what the customer is hiding and i had an idea i knew where it was all going but one twist in the middle of the book i didn't see coming.

Gemma Rogers really well and truly added some much tension and twists and turns that will shock you. Throughout the story i was tense from how many times the characters were being chased and having to hide that my heart was going for them. Nina was a relatable character and very strong despite having so many things go wrong for her she stayed confident and did everything to make things right for some of the other characters you'll learn about. I couldn't wait to see the bad guy(s) get their consequences and also learn what they their true intentions were.

The night shift is a suspenseful terror filled read that readers will enjoy and keep you engaged right to the very end.
