The idea of a treehouse is such a wonderful thing, a secret place to have private meetings and play out fantasies and games away from the grown-ups. Love the concept that this book provides.

The story is about two brothers who had an adventure (of sorts) when they went on holiday to Port Bowen in Cornwall with their parents. I'm not sure if Port Bowen is a fictitious place or not, as there was a fishing village of that name once that changed to Port Isaac in the fourteenth century. Anyway, the family stayed in a lodge that had a treehouse in the grounds. The prologue explains the disturbing event that happened there, so straight away we are dropped into the tale. Good start.

That was twenty years ago when the brothers were teenagers. The incident is never mentioned until a drama appears on television that accurately mirrors the events of that summer. This is not an unusual thing, many films and television programmes are inspired by real life crimes but in this case someone knows what happened.

The book is divided into two parts - the present and the holiday week. The first part shows how the adult brothers respond to the apparent discovery. This is compelling to see how the younger brother is distraught while the older brother is nonchalant about everything. Definitely the best part of the book, really well done.

At times the holiday section appears to be rather slow, perhaps building up to the dreadful event, but it demonstrates the egocentric members of the family, all of them unlikable. There are some unsavoury acts that are fortunately not graphic that serve to show the makings of a psychopath. Disappointed not to have a glimpse of the wonderful landscape of Cornwall, but I suppose the boys had no interest there with all those plans they had.

A book about family, fringe beliefs, guilt, empathy and regret, this is a very modern story with references to the current British culture and real people from the media. There is a mystery in this dark psychological tale, which leaves an unexpected ending.

This one started off really well, but then it became a little far-fetched. I lost interest and found myself putting the book down and doing other things. Not really a fan of cult books so I really didn't connect with it.

The Treehouse by B P Walter was my first thriller written by this author. There were many fun twists in the story and I hope to read more by Walter in the future.

Firstly thank you for my chance to read and review .
I’ve read most of this authors books and have enjoyed them .
The premise of this sounded intriguing and interesting whilst pulling me in . It started off strong with a fascinating idea . The brothers were both great characters who each added their own touch to the events unfolding.
However it fell short in the second half for me with its reveals and storyline .
But still a good book to escape to

I really dislike leaving reviews of less than 3 stars but unfortunately this book missed the mark for me. It started off fairly strong but then it lost all of they key elements that I look for in a thriller. There weren't really any elements of mystery, no interesting cliffhangers, the plot twists werent great, although i will say i didnt see the very last element coming. I found myself picking it up to read simply so I could get it over with and so I could choose something else to read.

A summer adventure
A lifetime of regrets
What happened in…
THE TREEHOUSE

This book gripped me from the start with the first chapter essentially telling you exactly what happens in the treehouse. However, I did find it slowed down after that. I also found that Albie, Robert’s flatmate, added nothing to the plot. I was got hooked again when you go back in time but then got impatient and just wanted to know everything that lead up to what happened. I will say the last secret really surprised me!
Thank you @netgalley & @onemorechapter for the ARC.

If you like twisted stories about the dark acts of people then The Treehouse by B P Walter is for you. After reading the description of this book I was super excited to get the chance to read it early. It pulled me in right from the beginning. The back and forth chapters of timelines and characters kept me wanting to see how this was going to play out. It did drag a bit in the middle to me and then the ending was full of so many family secret reveals. This is not a good family. There are many dark and disturbing events in this book. If you like mystery’s mixed with a bit of horror then I would recommend this to you. Thank you to HarperCollins UK - One More Chapter and NetGalley for the ARC!

Robert is horrified when he channel flicks to land on a three part mini-series about a girl being murdered in a treehouse … because he knows it is based on the ritualistic sacrifice he and his other brother performed 20 years earlier. The book explores how they have coped since and then takes us back to the time of the killing, unravelling other family secrets too. And who the mystery author is and how do they know what went on that night?
An enthrallingly dark book which I highly recommend.

The first 15% sucked me in and then it started to go a bit off the rails for me. It was a bit too much for me and fairly predictable, I didn't like the pacing and I just didn't like the brothers.

I was initially drawn to The Treehouse by its striking cover, which hinted at a dark and emotionally layered thriller. Sadly, the content didn’t live up to that promise.

The story follows the Palmer family as the events of a long-ago summer holiday are unearthed by a sensational true crime TV series. What begins as an intriguing premise quickly loses steam due to its structure and execution. The pacing is uneven—much of the novel is consumed by an extended flashback sequence that drags—and the momentum built in the early chapters quickly fizzles out.

I struggled with the writing style throughout. The prose felt overworked, and the excessive use of commas disrupted the flow and clarity of many sentences. It became a distraction and, unfortunately, made the reading experience feel more laborious than it needed to be.

The characters themselves were a major sticking point. Robert is spineless and petulant, while Kieran is self-indulgent and careless. The family dynamic is toxic, and I found it difficult to connect with or care about any of them. Add to this the disturbing backstory—rooted in the brothers’ adolescent obsession with sacrifice, which began at school and escalated to horrifying outcomes—and the novel took a direction that felt both uncomfortable and under-explored. The inclusion of human and animal sacrifice is especially troubling, and I don’t feel it was handled with the necessary weight or sensitivity.

In the final act, the book attempts to pull together a number of dramatic twists, but by then, my investment in the characters and story had waned. I do appreciate what the author was aiming to explore, but for me, it missed the mark on both emotional depth and narrative intrigue.

Thank you to B.P. Walter, HarperCollins UK, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Robert and Kieran are brothers, and Robert watches a tv show called The Treehouse. Robert is horrified by this tv programme and instantly seeks out his brother for support. Kieran is quite calm about it, and reassures Robert. Then everything just escalates.......

I am a huge fan of this author, and I loved this book. Robert and Kieran were great characters, very dark and very tense. The storyline was the same, with lots of dark twists and turns. I loved the fact that the brothers are literally chalk and cheese, yet are completely there for each other. I found the boys parents very strange, but that made the story better. I love how this was written, and the twists and turns that came along. Highly recommended.

This book hooked me in from the very opening line and it kept me curious and guessing the whole way. I highly recommend it. I didn't guess where it was going and a sense of dread and creepiness permeated the narrative. I loved it!

This was a tense and atmospheric read that kept me guessing all the way through. The story slowly unravels layers of secrets, and I loved how each chapter added just enough intrigue to keep me hooked. The pacing was well done, and the suspense built naturally without feeling forced.

There were a couple of moments where the plot felt a little drawn out, but the twists and emotional depth more than made up for it. I found myself really invested in the characters, even when they were flawed or hard to like.

Overall, I’d give it 4 stars gripping, well-written, and full of the kind of tension that makes you want to keep turning the pages.

Imagine seeing a TV drama about an event in your past that you would rather forget! That’s exactly what happens when Robert watches The Treehouse and sees it’s about , a crime twenty years ago, involving him and his older brother Kieran and it’s acted out word for word.

The whole premise of this book fascinates me and it was well executed.

The book is split between present events and the events of what happened in the lead up to and the actual crime itself and is completely led by the characters of the two brothers and their actions.

There are a few twists and turns as well thrown in that were completely unexpected.

Really enjoyed this one and would highly recommend.

Thank you netgalley and to the publishers for this arc copy.
The Tree House by B.P. Walter is a dark and twisty read that had me hooked from the start. The dual timelines kept the suspense high, and the way the story slowly unraveled was so satisfying. It’s emotional, unsettling, and full of secrets—just how I like my thrillers. A few twists were a bit easy to spot, but overall, it’s a gripping and well-written book. Definitely recommend if you’re into slow-burn psychological thrillers with a punch.
I will be reading from this author again glad I found them

I listened to the audiobook of this but gave up at 30%, I wasn’t engaged enough by the story or the characters.

Dual timelines work perfectly in this one to build huge suspense and leave you waning just one more chapter before bed… it’s a wonderful exploration of hidden darkness and family bonds, it felt extremely immersive

This was a massive nope for me. Animal violence is an absolute line. I also didn't like the story much but I check out when I can't forgive a character.

Two brothers, with opposite personalities, find their lives turned upside down when a television series starts causing major buzz. The issue? The show chronicles a murder the brothers committed, supposedly in secret, 20 years before, and recounts their actions word-for-word. The death was blamed on someone else and the pair supposedly got away with it. So who could know what happened that fateful evening? And why were two teenagers committing a murder in the first place?!

The book is told from mainly the boys’ POVs, along two timelines: the present-day, and 20 years ago.

The last two questions there are at the crux of the book, and there are plenty of twists and turns as we get to the answer of what really happened on that night 20 years ago. This book is almost a story-within-a-story, as we start in the present day with the series, then switches to the events of the summer 20 years before, then back to the present. But I didn’t hate that format. It kept things neatly balanced so that the story played out well.

I don’t want to give too much more away, but there’s some interesting stuff that plays out with the brothers in the past and present. It’s creepy and atmospheric and I really enjoyed it.

And those twists mentioned earlier were really good. Like really good. I did not see them coming, and had to pick my jaw up off the floor a couple of times. This author really has the element of surprise nailed.

If you’re looking for something unique and surprising, I recommend this one!
