After a short hiatus, Mark Billingham brings back Tom Thorne and an investigation that starts with four dead officers from the Metropolitan Police. The escalation is fast, in this superior story of revenge and, never far away, are the parallels of some real life cases that Billingham is able to incorporate without ever feeling shoehorned in - indeed, it adds to the overwhelmingly disturbing and downright scary encounters that move this story along at a rollicking pace. In lesser hands it may not work but of course, this is Mr B, with a rather amazing 25 years and books under his belt, and the experience shines through. Tom Thorne's world-weariness is ever-present but engaging and bizarrely welcome,
The usual team of weird and wonderfuls are also here of course, and I always enjoy the uneasy rapport that seems to exist between some of them, and the less obvious connections between others. One in particular probably deserves his own spin-off; but the trust between them all is severely tested as the realisation soon becomes obvious - this time, the Met aren't just investigating a crime; one fateful night will test Thorne to his limits.
Brilliant new addition to this long-running series, after time off to create Declan Miller (oh so different, oh so much fun!) I do feel as if new oomph has been given to Thorne and his cohorts, even though they weren't short of it before!

The Tom Thorne series is among the best police procedurals available and this entry lives up to all those that come before. Given all the problems facing the Met in recent years, this novel felt very timely. Despite the bleak subject matter there are a few moments of humour too, mostly the workplace banter between returning characters Thorne, Holland, Tanner and Hendricks. It kept up the pace well and had a few shocks along the way. I thought it was excellent.

Been a little while since we had a new Tom Thorne as Mark Billingham has been creating a highly new enjoyable series based in Blackpool. No need to worry about quality as this is amongst the best of the Tom Thorne series. Tracking down a cop killer set against a background of police corruption, Thorne has his work cut out.
At times shocking, never dull and with Billingham's trademark humour dotted around the book, we have another winner folks!

Mark Billingham’s What the Night Brings plunges readers once again into the shadowy streets of London alongside his beloved, flawed detective, Tom Thorne. This installment captures everything fans have come to expect from the series: a tense, atmospheric crime story laced with psychological depth and social commentary.
Thorne is pulled into an investigation that forces him to confront not only London’s criminal underworld but the darker corners of the police force itself. Billingham masterfully balances a taut, twisting plot with deeply personal stakes, giving Thorne new emotional territory to navigate without ever losing sight of the hard-boiled edge that defines him.
Billingham’s prose is crisp yet evocative, painting the night-soaked city with shades of fear and doubt. Themes of betrayal, institutional corruption, and the heavy cost of justice ripple through every chapter. As always, Billingham excels at secondary characters, giving even minor players memorable moments that add texture to the narrative.

This is the 19th Tom Thorne book but can be read as a standalone (although once you read it you will want to read all the others), Billingham delivers a well-paced narrative with a riveting plot. The gruesome storyline is lightened by the repartee between the characters. The topical issue of corruption in the police force is explored. There is a vigilante taking the law into his own hands by murdering corrupt police officers. There is also a mole in the police force who is passing on confidential information. Thorne and his colleagues do not know who to trust. The shocking ending leads Thorne disullusioned and questioning his position.
A great addition to a wonderful series that just seems to be getting better.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Inspector Thorne returns in 'What the Night Brings' by Mark Billingham, his 19th book in the series. In the novel, someone is targeting and killing police officers. As Thorne and Tanner start to dig, it becomes apparent that the motive is linked to crimes police officers have perpetrated using the power their uniform gives them. However, are the crimes all linked, and is there something horrifically darker going on?
Like Tony Parsons, Billingham has drawn upon the recent concerns that public has about the safety of the MET police force. He does it well, using Thorne's cynical perspective and outsider view very effectively. As always this is a high paced page turner, with a great deal of humour despite the subject matter. Billingham is very clever and creative when it comes to how the crimes are perpetrated, and how the perpetrators are caught. This is a book I would highly recommend, although it might not increase people's trust of the large number of police officers who do go to work for the right reason.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Mark Billingham is one of my favourite authors and I'm so honoured to have been granted early access to this latest Tom Thorne outing. I was gripped throughout this one and the ending took me completely by surprise. A clear five stars from me.

Unfortunately I am not going to give this one five stars, mainly due to the fact that I worked a couple of things out prior to the end! Otherwise, it would have received five stars without any shadow of a doubt as it was a most enjoyable read, as are all Mark Billingham books.

I was so happy to see the return of Tom Thorne. A great fast paced storyline with great interactions/relationships between the characters and plenty of twists and turns I had a hard time putting it down. I can’t say too much without spoiling it but I certainly wasn’t expecting that ending, wow what a book, A solid and easy 5 stars

After a few years away, Tom Thorne returns in another thrilling novel. Four police officers are killed in plain sight - poisoned as they celebrate a job well done. It's hard to make sense of everything, until another officer is killed on duty - stabbed in a park and lured there by persons unknown. Someone is clearing house - and the deaths of lone officers may just be the start of a quest for retribution.
This is an absolutely fantastic book, and shows why Mark Billingham is one of the best at what he does. An easy 5*.

Tom Thorne returns in the fast-paced series. He has a copkiller on his hands who is always one step ahead of Tom's team.
The killer is getting inside information but Tom and Nicola Turner can't figure out the source.
This thriller fizzes until the final twist which I didn't see coming!
Another great book from Mark Billingham
I would like to thank Sphere/Little,Brown Book Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book

I love Mark Billingham's Thorne series, and this 19th addition to the series is no exception - quite simply, it took my breath away. I cried, I gasped, and I sat open mouthed for 5 minutes after I finished it!
Someone is killing police officers, and Tom Thorne, Nicola Tanner and Dave Holland are tasked with finding out who and why - but who can they trust?
Fast paced, relatable, entertaining, a fabulous piece of crime fiction. I really enjoy the relationships between the characters in this series, and the way everyone interacts and uses their strengths. The team face a tricky case, yet Billingham never loses the comedy elements or the emotional interactions. A fabulous book.

Thanks to Little Brown and NetGalley for ARC.
Tom Thorne is still plugging away at the Met, more disillusioned than ever and thinking much more frequently about packing it in, especially now Helen has officially moved on. When public confidence in policing and especially the Met is at an all time low, and online and in-person abuse seems to be at an all-time high, how does he keep motivating himself to catch the bad guys?
When someone's grudge against the force seems to have spilled over into real life attacks on corrupt or violent Met Officers, his motivation is damage limitation - stop any innocents getting caught up in the violence and put the murderer/s away no matter what their reasoning was. He and Nicola Tanner keep plugging away, trying to get ahead of the likely suspect, shadowy as he may be. As always this goes to some very dark places and Thorne doesn't know who to trust, and it may be Billingham's strongest yet.

The Tom Thorne series is one of the very best in crime fiction, and the nineteenth novel is a stunner. DI Thorne, the world weary, country and curry loving detective, and his team face a killer who is targeting police officers. It's a direct assault on the Met - and they appear to have inside help.
Without spoilers, the case progresses and reaches an ending that no one saw coming.
What The Night Brings is a superb thriller, with all of the characters we know well involved and build on everything that has gone before in this excellent series. One not to be missed.

I’ve read all of the Tom Thorne series over the past two decades and I’m always excited to read the next in the series. This is an excellent addition to the series and probably one of my favourites but it’s hard to say too much about the plot without giving spoilers. It focuses on the very topical subject of the behaviour of individuals within the Met Police which is explored during Thorne and Tanner’s initial investigation into the murder of four police officers. It was great to connect back with Thorne and the rest of the team and I love the relationships between them. Billingham writes so seamlessly and I raced through this novel over the course of 24 hours. It’s a tense read, full of twists and surprises and I’d highly recommend it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

Full of twists and turns, a real joy to get back in touch with all my favourite characters from the Tom Thorne series. Fast paced and fully absorbing, I could hardly put it down. I certainly didn’t see the final massive revelation coming! What a fantastic read. Can’t wait for the next in the series, fingers crossed!

What the night really brought for me with this book, was a one-sitting read into the wee small hours, and the book hangover from hell. You can't talk about what makes this book so special without some serious spoilers, but for me, it's one of the top Thorne novels.

Oh. My. God.
It should be illegal to leave an ending this way!!
Everyone needs to read this series. You *could* read this as a standalone but you should definitely read them all to get the full impact of that ending!

Another excellent installment in the Thorne series.
Mark Billingham has an engaging style from the off and his thrillers are always a joy to read.
This is no exception.

Back in 2010, I came across a TV show called Sleepyhead on Sky One. It was the first in a dramatization of the Tom Thorne thrillers by the author Mark Billingham. I found the storyline to be at once disturbing yet, brilliant.
And since then, that time, 15 years ago, I started reading all of the Thorne novels. I am a huge fan and in particular, I loved the last Thorne novel, "The Murder Book" which was released three years ago. That was book number 18 in the series.
So I had very, very high expectations last weekend, when I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of "What The Night Brings", book number 19 in the series.
And goodness, did Billingham deliver. There were shocks. I was crying. I was laughing. I was laughing as usual at the snarky comments between Thorne and Hendrix who has to be 9ne of my favorite fictional characters of all time. I absolutely love him. He's just an ingenious creation. It was great to see Tanner back as well. And life going a little bit more positively for her at long last.
And it's not often a book brings out so many reactions in me. I could not see any of the twists coming. I was completely in shock with the ending.
And, the story line. Oh my goodness. So brilliant. The storyline covered some contemporary issues such as the "me too" movement. And focuses on the growing fear in the UK at the discovery over the dangerous behaviour by numerous officers. Now, officers are being targeted and Thorne fears this is part of a revenge plot. And soon Thorne and Tanner don't know who to trust.
And there are just so many twists, the action is on from the very first page.
And, you know what, I'm really looking forward to is actually when the book is out, so I can finally talk about it!
And I've also as always, I've pre-ordered the audio books because I love hearing Mark Bingham narrate the character. He brings Thorne to life brilliantly.
