Thank you Black Rose Writing for this arc.

The book is a very imaginative but, at times, a bit of a dark fantasy story told from the PsOV of cats., I wasn’t sure how dark this one was going to go even with the age listing for it so I’m urging adults to think about how emotionally ready younger readers might be for scenes of animals in danger.

As things are explained to the kitten, the reader learns about this world. The story cleverly incorporates the normal behaviors of cats to explain a lot of what goes on. They enter the Dreaming while sleeping and can refresh their energy and powers by stealing things from their humans. Of course it’s basic ‘cat’ to meow loudly to get their humans to do what they want or give them things. Very quickly Shaman discovers he can cast a purrsuasion spell to get them more brisket. Yes, even the cats are aware that the names for many of Shaman’s spells are groan-worthy purr-puns.

As the action continues, there are a few times when ‘something’ will be mentioned that will either turn up quickly or turn out to be important later on. Some of this isn’t too subtle but neither are readers whacked over the head too often with them too often to make sure we “get it.”

Much of the book is spent worldbuilding but this is incorporated with the action instead of being huge info-dumps. By the end, the characters are in a safe position, danger has been overcome, but there is plenty more in this world that needs taking care of and evil creatures lurk in the Dreaming, wanting to get their fangs, teeth, stingers, or tentacles on young Shaman, as would be expected in a fantasy with a Chosen One.

There are many delightful characters including the cats who are also the heroes. One makes an appearance late in the book and I can’t help thinking of a feline equivalent of Master Po/Yoda. I definitely want to read more in this world and am eagerly waiting for book two. B

JR Konkol does a fantastic job in writing this fantasy book , I really enjoyed the way the characters and world were presented and developed. It was everything that I wanted in a opening chapter and was glad it was everything that I was looking for and am excited for more in this world. This was a strong start to the Felinity Chronicles series and left me wanting to read more in this series.

This was really interesting. I think that if the author had written this book with humans, instead of cats, it would have been practically cliche, but with the main characters being actual cats, it was such a unique take and I absolutely adored the characters and how the author explained cats weirdness as kind of traits. I would absolutely love to read more about this world and see all the characters (cats) again. It was so cute and so much fun!

Aimed at a young YA audience, this book deals with four house cats and their adventures fighting evil, casting spells, building bonds of friendship, and charming humans into giving them table scraps. It’s cute, and there’s a lot of effort put into making their world and white it reminds me a lot of the Warrior series with how it treats cats as cats, not just people in furry suits, it also reads like a D&D adventure with evil spiders to defeat and coyotes to conquer. The characters lack a bit of subtlety and nuance but, again, this is aimed at younger readers who will, I think, have a lot of fun with Shaman, his fellow cats, and the story.

This was a pleasant read, and the writing and pacing were solid. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC.

5/5 stars for a young audience
2.5-3/5 stars for me!

I would love to recommend this to parents of my students. They aren’t at the reading level for it yet, but it’s one of those books that seem just right for a younger audience to be read. It reminds me of reading and being read the warrior cats series. For myself, I didn’t enjoy it too much early on. Once it got further I loved it more and more, and I would definitely like to see where this cute series may go.
