Brigid Kemmerer is one of my favourite authors, her books always astounding me from the worldbuilding to the character depth. Warrior Princess Assassin was no different, and whilst it isnt my all time favourite of hers, it was an enjoying read and I cannot wait to see what comes next in the series.

When YA authors switch to Adult books I am always a bit skeptical but Brigid Kemmerer did such a great job! There is still a young tone to the characters but the spice is much appreciated.
I will say I was so worried when I started reading this was going to be another twilight hunger games love triangle situation and I was so pleasantly surprised and loved where the characters went. I love that the author (in all their books) treats queer relationships as any relationship regardless of gender, there is no grand coming out or statement, Love is Love!!
I am going to be stalking Goodreads for a sequel announcement and may not sleep until I have it in my hands

Thank you to NetGalley and Brigid Kemmerer for the opportunity to read this book. I’m giving it 5⭐️.
I went into this book expecting a typical fantasy tale about a princess and her upcoming marriage. Boy, was I mistaken! This book is packed with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end.
Princess Marjoriana of Astranza is destined to marry the fiery King Maddox Kyronan as part of an alliance. As she embarks on her journey to Incendar, events unfold, and new relationships blossom, all whilst unexpectedly involving her childhood friend Asher.
Despite its slow-burning pace, Brigid Kemmerer’s writing is incredibly captivating. The relationships between her characters are intense and emotionally charged. Her characters are well-developed, and you’re drawn into their journeys.
I can’t wait for the next book and look forward to exploring Brigid Kemmerer’s other works.

Based on the title, I had initially assumed this book would have a completely different story, with a princess taking on two other roles and being some kind of girl boss. Couldn't have been more wrong!
It took me a couple of chapters to get into the story, but after the first quarter or so, I was fully invested, and absolutely devoured this ARC!!
The book starts with an arranged marriage setting, and generally has a great plot with political scheming, action packed scenes and secrets to unravel, but its real strength lies in the characters and their interactions. Although, this makes it slower paced, it's not a bad thing at all, since that way there is time to fully appreciate the gentle touches and how they begin to trust and open up to each other.
I went into it knowing it had Why Choose romance, and I know it's not for everyone, but even if you are not into that, I would still recommend this book because that aspect is handled so well! The burn is slow, so when you get to the spicy scenes, it really feels like a reward.
The setup for the sequel is perfect, and I already can't wait to spend more time in the company of Jory, Asher and Ky.
PS. Remember to check the trigger warnings, because there is a lot of trauma to unpack.
A massive thank you to HarperCollins UK, Netgalley and the author for providing a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I had some apprehension about this book, because my dumbass read some reviews that weren't great. That being said, I am absolutely obsessed with this book. It was soooo stinking good. This is a quick read with a super fun writing style, which is one that is similar to my own. I am absolutely in love with Asher, who sounds like Draco Malfoy joined the Dark Brotherhood in Tamriel (Skyrim). The only thing I found kind of weird was that both MMC's are blond. Asher is white blond and Maddox is dark blond. Maddox should have dark hair. A blond Maddox? Nah #teamasher for life. I found this to be super intense and intriguing. Asher, the Assassin, gets orders to kill both Jory, the Princess and his friend from childhood, and Maddox, the King and Warrior, that is due to marry Jory. What could go wrong? If you're looking for political intrigue, marriage of convenience, pining, and found family, this is for you. It has a slow burn with a lot of tension between all three of our main characters and does have a sexually graphic scene between all three MC's, which I know might not be for everyone. I didn't think it was for me, but dang, it was so well written.

I had a great time with Warrior Princess Assassin. Brigid Kemmerer gives us characters whose morals and motivations are clear from the start, making it easy to connect and root for them. The warrior and assassin in particular stood out to me, they’ve got deep, layered backstories that pulled me in emotionally. The princess plays more of an observer role, but through her perspective, the tension and relationships unfold beautifully.
The connections between the trio are well crafted, and I genuinely enjoyed watching their dynamics evolve. Side characters aren’t just background noise here either, they’re distinct and well-developed, each adding their own flavor to the story.
I’m really intrigued by the magic system. We get glimpses of how it works, but I’m hoping the sequel dives deeper into its mechanics and expands the world further, especially the unexplored kingdom and the political landscape.
Why not five stars? The pacing. It kicked off strong, but somewhere in the second half it slowed down a bit, and the ending wrapped up a bit too quickly. Still, it was a satisfying and immersive read overall. Can’t wait for book two!

4 stars
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for early copy of this book, I loved her YA series when I read it last year, so much that I couldn't wait for this release when I saw it on here a couple of weeks ago. I loved this so much! I can't wait for the next one.

From the very first page, Warrior Princess Assassin had me hooked. The premise is right there in the title—a warrior, a princess, and an assassin—but Brigid Kemmerer turns what could have been a simple romantasy setup into something layered, emotional, and completely addictive.
When two assassination contracts threaten to shatter a fragile political alliance, assassin Asher makes a choice that changes everything: instead of killing his targets, he warns Princess Jory—his childhood friend—and kidnaps both her and Ky, the warrior king she’s meant to marry. What follows is a desperate, high-stakes race across kingdoms, with danger snapping at their heels, assassins in pursuit, and secrets that could tear them apart.
Told through the POVs of all three leads, the book offers an intimate, multifaceted look at the trio’s dynamic. Each character is compelling in their own right—Jory, brave and principled; Ky, fierce yet deeply loyal; Asher, vicious but achingly vulnerable. Trust is hard-won between them, complicated by their tangled pasts, simmering attraction, and the emotional scars they each carry. The romance isn’t just about Jory choosing between Ky and Asher—it’s about all three choosing each other, slowly and deliberately, until the tension is almost unbearable.
The “why choose” element is beautifully done here—there’s no obvious favorite, no weak link. The chemistry is palpable in every pairing, the slow burn delivers a satisfying payoff late in the third act, and the relationship feels authentic, tender, and hard-fought. Alongside the romance, there’s plenty of intrigue, betrayal, and action, as well as sensitive, well-handled explorations of PTSD, abuse, and slavery woven naturally into the plot.
It’s rare to find a romantasy that nails both the emotional depth and the adrenaline-fueled pacing, but Warrior Princess Assassin does exactly that. It’s intimate and intense, dangerous and tender—an irresistible start to what promises to be a phenomenal series. I’m already counting the days until book two.
Thank you to HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction | HarperVoyager and Netgalley for the privilege of reading and reviewing this book.

I have to say straight up - I loved this book! I was impressed and more than a little obsessed by this story, the first in a new adult fantasy series by YA-stalwart Kemmerer. The premise is in the title - a warrior, a princess and an assassin are suddenly and shockingly embroiled in danger when a political and military alliance is upset by not one, but two (!) secret assassination contracts.
Events quickly spin out of control when instead of killing his targets, assassin Asher immediately tells the princess Jory (his childhood friend) and instead kidnaps both her and the warrior king of the neighbouring land, (her intended husband!) Ky. The danger is very real as our three characters race across two kingdoms pursued by more assassins at their heels. Someone wants Jory and Ky dead very badly, but even Ky’s fire magic powers aren’t enough to keep them safe.
What sets this book apart from so many other offerings in the romantasy genre in the last few years are these wonderful, complex characters as well as the tension between them, offset by a growing, unsure desire. Very quickly, I was obsessed with them all, gobbling up every interaction like a glutton. Each faces the very real challenge of building trust with each other, as well as navigating their past history AND their present growing attraction.
This book has been described as Why Choose, but I think the romance in the story is less about Jory choosing both Ky and Asher for herself and more about all three of them choosing each other. In particular, former slave Asher’s path to trusting in Ky and their dynamic is my favourite aspect of what becomes a beautiful MMF relationship.
It is spicy but those who love a slow burn will be rewarded by payoff late in the 3rd act, trust me when I say the buildup is worth it. Apart from the admittedly distracting relationship between our three (gorgeous, absolute smoke-show) main characters there is intrigue and betrayal and fighting and murder and hard decisions. I admit am absolutely devastated that I have to wait for the next book because I loved this world and the story, but most of all I loved our fierce, loyal warrior, his brave princess and their vicious-yet-vulnerable assassin.
Content warnings for: murder, violence, sexual assault (off-page)

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction for providing me with an eARC of this book!
I had a lot of fun with Warrior Princess Assassin! I haven't read any of Brigid Kemmerer's other books, but was excited for this one as it is her adult debut.
This book is about three characters, Ky, Jory and Asher, whose lives are tied together due to a political marriage and threats of assassination. The premise of the book was really interesting, as was the magic system. However, the world building and plot are definitely not super fleshed out, taking a backseat to the characters and the romance elements. So if you are looking for plot-heavy, this would not be the right read.
The three POVs were all definitely different from each other and I generally liked all of them - but perhaps preferred Ky's slightly. The way that the relationships developed between the characters was fun to read. I tore through this book pretty quickly because of how much I was enjoying it.
Is it the best book I've ever read? No. But it was fun! Some elements of the plot seemed pretty obvious from early on, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. But going into this book I was expecting a love triangle, and that is certainly not what this book ended up delivering! I won't spoil what it is, but it is pretty clear what the development will be from about 20% in.
Definitely check trigger warnings as there are quite a few, albeit mostly off-page and in a character's backstory rather than actively happening in the plot.
I will be checking out the rest of the series and hoping it's as fun as this first entry!

I was so intrigued when I heard that Brigid had written a why choose romantasy! It felt like a big departure from her YA books (which I love), that I could not wait to get my hands on it! And truly it does not disappoint 👏🏼 I could NOT put it down, and read it in under 24 hours!
This book is extremely intense - the entire story takes place over just a handful of days 🤯 Because of this it’s very much a character-driven novel, without the depth of world building or plot you may expect in a romantasy - but that didn’t bother me at all, I was still obsessed! We get all three PoVs (!) which means that you still get to know each character really well.
I loved how well Jory, Asher & Ky fit together - and I especially loved the growing relationship between Asher & Ky 🥵 (If anything Jory is the 3rd wheel here 😅) As the timeline of this book is short, and these two are strangers at the beginning, we don’t get as much depth as I would have liked (truly my only criticism x), but I cannot wait to see how it develops in book 2.
A special mention to my favourite character Asher 🥹 He is such a broken boy but so wonderful, I absolutely loved him 😭💔
Also I know most people see why choose / MMF and assume a very spicy book, but that isn’t the case here! This is a slooow burn 🔥 and whilst the spice is *great* when you get to it, there isn’t too much of it.

Please check the trigger warnings because there are some heavy topics in this book.
Both mmc’s are blonde (I’m down badly for them)
Right from the off I needed this book to be a why choose/throuple (I went into this without knowing much) and I’m forever grateful to this author for writing something different to what the norm is.
The characters are interesting and all have interesting personality traits, that it was easy to root for them and enjoy reading about them.
I wish we had seen more development between the three of them but they just work. The plot was interesting as well, I’m excited to find out how things will go in the next book.
[thank you to the publisher for gifting me an e-arc ~ all opinions are my own]

I think I just found the biggest surprise of the year cuz oh my god this book was amazing!! I was a bit skeptical going into it for 2 reasons. The last book I read by Brigid Kemmerer was one of my least favourite books ever and I’m just not a romantasy girlie. This book blew my mind though.
The title honestly sums up this book pretty well. This novel focuses on three different characters whose paths get intertwined in a surprising way.
King Maddox Kyronan, the warrior, also known as Ky, whose fire power earned him the reputation of ruthless leader on the battlefield. Now he is facing a crisis; his kingdom is slowly burning, and the only way to save his people is to enter a political marriage with the princess of the neighbouring kingdom, Astranza.
Princess Marjoriana, commonly referred to as Jory, knows that her home needs the protection of the warrior king, but she is hiding a dangerous secret. Jory is her kingdom’s last hope, but part of her still wishes to reject her duties and run away with her childhood friend, Asher.
Asher, an assassin with a dark past, was once a young noblemanin Astranza’s palace, where him and Jory caused mischief day and night, but now he must do whatever in takes to survive. Working as an assassin in the Hunter’s Guild, Asher can’t say no when a well paying job comes his way. That is until he finds out that his targets are Jory and Ky, and he must decide what he is willing to do to protect the woman he loves.
If you are looking for a plot driven book, this one is not for you, sorry. The characters are what make this story compelling and this is something clear from the beginning. I absolutely loved this aspect since I adore character drive books!! I also loved that even tho this was a multipov book, all the characters had a distinct voice and you could tell right away whose pov you were reading.
Jory can be pretty naive I won’t lie, and at times it can be pretty painful to read certain scenes, but the more time passes, the more you can see her grow and becoming her own person which I honestly loved so much!! And her interactions with Ky and Asher???? Superb, I was living for them!!!!
Ky, on the other hand, was a really big surprise for me. From the synopsis, he didn’t seem to be a character I would like very much, but somehow I ended up loving him. He is ruthless and fearsome, and a warrior through and through, but his kindness and compassion are evident from the start. He is such a complex character and even by the end of the book, I feel like there are still more layers to him that we will have to uncover in the sequel, which is something I’m curious to see now! But yea, going back, his experience with war and battlefields affected him deeply, also distorting his perception of the world around him. It genuinely made me so sad to read his povs sometimes.
Now, onto my favourite character, Asher. I might have a thing for tortured souls. He has led a very hard life and has an even harder time opening to others, especially Jory, even though they have known each other since childhood. I’ve honestly just wanted to hug him all throughout the book. He has been through way too much and didn’t deserve any of it!!
The romance was definitely my favourite part. Polyamorous relationships in books are pretty rare so I was excited to pick this one up when I heard it’s not actually a love triangle. I loved seeing how they all interacted with each other, being all three together or just 2 of them. They all fit together so well, completing one another in so many aspects.
Ky and Asher had the most interesting interactions. The attraction between them is obvious from the start, but I loved to see that there was also this understanding between them. There were so many things Jory couldn’t grasp because of her sheltered upbringing, but that’s where Ky and Asher had a thing only they shared and it made for such sweet interactions towards the last 30%.
Asher and Jory were also getting to me. Childhood friends to lovers??? SIGN. ME. UP.
The plot twists were slightly predictable. I guessed them early on and it had made me just slightly disappointed since I wanted at least one of them to be shocking but alas there is time with the sequel.
Now, onto the things I didn’t care for and the reason why this book is a 4 star.
The romance was a bit insta love. I didn’t mind it as much because it didn’t read as insta love, but if you sit and think about it, there’s a lot of insta lust considering the whole book takes place in the span of a few days.
The other reason is more of a personal preference, but I don’t really enjoy a first person pov in a fantasy book of any kind. There were a few times when I had to stop reading because I was internally cringing from their inner monologue and I know I would have had an easier time in the beginning had this book been written in third person.
Moreover, the first person pov made the characters read younger than they actually are. There were so many instances when I would forget these characters were adults (for context: Jory is 25, Asher is 26, and Ky is 30) because their inner monologues would make them sound like teenagers having their first crush.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed this book and after that (illegal) ending, I need book two immediately now!! If you are big on romantasy books, you will definitely enjoy this! And even if you aren’t, I still recommend giving this book a shot as it is so much different from the usual romantasy books already out there!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the arc of this book!

WARRIOR PRINCESS ASSASSIN is the first in an adult romantasy trilogy full of great romantic tension.
Brigid Kemmerer does yearning and tension between characters so well. There is so much frission between Asher, Ky, and Jory throughout, three pulls of desire and distrust or outright hatred. I liked that the reasons in each pairing are different, stemming from their different life experiences. This gives the book three different dynamics to play with, though they all come together in a nice mix.
This interpersonal tension plays out across initially a short space of time. A lot happens in the first day which does a good job of setting up the overall state of play. The rest of the book pushes the characters onto a journey where they're in close contact and discovering that things are not quite as they initially thought they were.
I appreciated that there wasn't an ideological problem at the heart of the tension between them. Yes, there are rumours about Ky but it's not as simple as "he's the enemy because of X which later turns out to be false." Instead, the antagonism and distrust is because of actions and betrayals in the first quarter which we see on page. This gives the hatred/love interplay more immediacy and can't be solved by finding out the "truth".
I really liked that we didn't end the book on a big dramatic betrayal an break up. I'm sure that there is relationship drama to come between them in the next few books, but it was a refreshing change of pace to have a less fraught relationship ending. Plus, the relationship is so new at the end that I think the tension of a break up and betrayal will be more devastating once there's been more time to develop it.

Omg I devoured this book in every spare moment I had! The tension that built up was delicious. Each perspective added so much to this story. This book stands so well as an adult debut, it is dark and gritty, sexy and pure, and oh so perfect. I cannot wait for the next book!

I’m a big fan of stories told through multiple points of view, especially when they interweave seamlessly, and Warrior Princess Assassin absolutely delivered on that front. The shifting dynamics between the three main characters kept me hooked. You're never quite sure where their loyalties lie, or whether they're allies, enemies, or somewhere in between. It made for a tense and compelling read.
While the Princess’s backstory felt somewhat familiar, I found the Warrior and Assassin’s histories particularly engaging. Their personal journeys added depth not only to their characters but also to the wider political and cultural landscape of the world. The interplay between different nations and their internal politics was well thought out and layered.
The magic system stood out as especially intriguing. It clearly has significant influence over the world, yet seems to be accessible to only a few, a mystery I’m eager to see explored further in the next instalment.
The relationship between the three main characters was both fascinating and at times stressful (in a good way!). It’s a dynamic I haven’t encountered before, and I was pleasantly surprised by how naturally it worked. I'm excited to see how their relationships evolve with the events still to come.
The side characters, especially the soldiers, were another highlight. Their loyalty and camaraderie brought warmth and humour to the story, adding a nice balance to the tension with their banter and friendship.
Overall, I had a fantastic time with this book and tore through it quickly. There are still so many questions I’m eager to see answered, and I can’t wait to dive into the next book to find out where the story goes from here.
Thank you to Harper Voyager and Netgalley for this ARC to review.
4.5 stars

I don't know what Brigid Kemmerer put in this book, but it was certainly 100% addictive! I am obsessed 🙈
Warrior Princess Assassin starts as a traditional premise of an arranged marriage to establish an alliance between two nations in need. This is a trope I tend to enjoy as it hints of more political intrigue layered over the main plot. While this story ultimately leans heavily into its characters, it still leaves us with the promise of exciting things to come.
This book is clearly an introductory book to what I suspect will be a very exciting series. We get enough plot to keep us curious about the larger story and future twists, plenty of action to keep us on the edge of our seats, and just the right amount yearning and romantic tension to have stomach fluttering with butterflies. This being said, please bear in mind this is a highly character driven story, being the main focus getting us to understand all shades of the three main characters, and how they can help each other grow and overcome their traumas and fears.
I must admit I was very curious about the romance on the book being a thropple, and I must say this was beautifully and extraordinarily well executed. Honestly, I believe in this relationship more than I have in most romances I’ve read in recent years.
This was my first time reading Brigid Kemmerer and I want to emphasize the writing was definitely a highlight of this book. I was engaged in the story and captured by the characters the moment we are introduced to each one of them. I loved everything about this book and 100% recommend it to Romantasy fans.
I would like to HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction | HarperVoyager and NetGalley for the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the definition of a fun Romantasy! It’s really easy to get into, the romantic aspect hooks you immediately and it feels like a fast paced read! I’m OBSESSED with the romance in this though. The multi POV was executed to perfection, making me more and more invested with each chapter. I LOVE how they fit so well as a unit too! It all worked so, so well.
Definitely recommend to those who love a character driven, romance focused read. Can’t wait for the next book!
Thank you to Avon and Harper Collin’s for my ARC!
4.25/5 ⭐️

Outstanding. Phenomenal. Epic.
Thank you Harper Collins, NetGalley and Brigid Kemmerer for the privilege of reading this early. I have not been so excited about a new book and subsequent series in a long time, trapped in a bit of a reading slump. This hauled me out and reminded me exactly why I LOVE to read and why I LOVE romantasy.
Who to trust? Who to kill? Who to love?
Warrior, Princess, Assassin is the absolute definition of a page turner! I couldn’t stop, didn’t want to stop and didn’t want it to end. From the very beginning the plot and its characters had me hooked until the very end. Full of twists and turns I could never quite guess what was going to happen next!
The chapters from the 3 different characters POV’s adds to the intrigue and tension of the plot as the reader gets to experience events through the various perspectives. It offers a layer of intimacy with each character where we get to explore their inner thoughts, hopes and fears. The emotional depth this creates is one to be rivalled and it really did totally encapsulate me as a reader.
This book touched upon so many dark and sensitive topics like PTSD, physical and emotional abuse, as well as sexual abuse and slavery, but Brigid did it in such a way that it genuinely feels cathartic as these characters re-visit, learn to deal with and bond over their trauma. It is beautifully woven into the storyline and masterfully done to ensure realism and sensitivity.
So many romantasy books leave us on gut wrenching and soul numbing cliffhangers that I’ve started to dread the ending of books, but this story’s conclusion had me shouting out loud for all the right reasons!!! Rather than nerves and anxiety, I excitedly and eagerly wait for book 2.
I have never read a love triangle/why choose where, for me, there wasn’t an obvious favourite or choice. This book is the benchmark for me. Future writers, read and learn how it is done, because here the chemistry between all three characters was undeniable and palpable throughout. The best romantic tension I have read in a long time that feels authentic and genuine. Tender yet dangerous! This for me is what makes this book truly exceptional. All three characters had their own intrigues, their own demons, their own vulnerabilities and for once I could not choose. I didn’t want to choose!
This book truly was a breath of fresh, but electrically charged, air in the fantasy genre and I cannot wait for the next instalment!
Infinity stars.

Warrior Princess Assassin starts the Braided Fate fantasy trilogy and is the author’s first foray into adult fantasy after several YA series. I liked her Cursebreakers trilogy, but her other books haven’t excited me as much. Here, the author shakes the romantasy tropes and does it well.
The book is narrated by its three eponymous characters. Princess Marjoriana is 25, and about to be married to Maddox Kyronan, 30, the king of the neighbouring kingdom; the warrior. Then there’s Asher, once a son of a courtier and Jory’s childhood friend, now a former slave turned assassin.
Jory’s kingdom needs Ky’s fire magic to drive away a warring kingdom from their border. Ky needs the weather magic of Jory’s father to heal the crops in his kingdom. It’s outwardly a straightforward political alliance, but both are holding secrets that might ruin the agreement.
And then the ruin comes from an unexpected direction. Assassins’ guild is hired to kill both, and they send Asher. He’s unwilling to kill his childhood sweetheart, and she doesn’t want him to kill Ky either. The three become allies out of necessity, because Asher knows the guild will keep sending assassins until everyone is dead.
The three flee to Ky’s kingdom. But assassins are after them, and they have no idea who’s behind the killing orders. And Ky’s kingdom isn’t a safe place either, because his people hold him responsible for the failed crops and uncontrollable fires. And he can’t tell them who really is behind it.
This was a fairly straightforward start to an epic fantasy, with plenty of action and a few good twists. I guessed who would betray them from the moment they were introduced, and there were a couple of inconsistencies that annoyed me (for example, the book takes place in winter, yet everyone expects the crops to be thriving), but the political plot wasn’t the most important part of the story. What made the book interesting was the romantic plot that unfurled slowly and carefully.
In romantic fantasy, there’s a tried-and-true trope of two suitors, one of which wins the girl in the end while the other turns out to be the villain—a trope the author has used herself before. She departs from that from the start though. I feared it would lead to a reverse harem story—the men both having the woman while basically ignoring one another—which never works for me. But the author went for a three-way romance where all three are genuinely attracted to other two, and she did it well.
The lynchpin of the relationship isn’t Jory, the sheltered maiden, or Ky, the strong protector. It’s Asher, the traumatised former sex slave who has trouble being touched. His trauma is unravelled slowly and dealt with respect, as Ky gently helps him. Asher is the one who realises Ky’s traumas, the one who knows how sheltered Jory has been, and the one with most experience in three-way sex. By the time the first bedroom scene takes place at the end of the book, all three are in the same mental space—as is the reader—and while they don’t go all the way, the act brings them together as a three-person unit that will face the future together.
What would’ve been a pretty mundane and fairly simple epic fantasy romance turned out to be more interesting because of the characters and their relationships. Jory was perhaps the weakest link in the end, her character that of a YA heroine despite her age, but she’s growing. Ky was saved from being an all-powerful hero with his own trauma. Asher wasn’t a pushover or a weakling despite his past. And hopefully the men will heal during the course of the story. Looking forward to reading more.
