I had a great time reading this book, the pacing was excellent and it felt like there was enough action to keep things going whilst also allowing the relationships between the characters to develop faithfully. And intriguing plot point to end on, I do wish we got to see more of the characters magical abilities but I’m hoping this will happen in the next book. Really looking forward to the next instalment!

ok but brigid really said ✨girlboss ✨ with Warrior Princess Assassin. this book had me hooked from the first page! and its been a minute since that has happened to me. like, imagine being royalty and a trained killer? the pacing worked for me without feeling chaotic, and the action scenes? love. and i loved the inner conflict the MC had between duty and desire, Bonus points for the romantic tension (you KNOW what I mean) that had me kicking my feet and internally screaming.

that being said, it didn’t fully hit five stars for me just because I wanted a little more emotional depth in certain scenes? sometimes it felt like we skimmed the surface. overall? a promising story and i really enjoyed myself more than i was expecting as i barely ever enjoy romantasies anymore 😭

thank you netgalley! <3

Warrior Princess Assassin is the first book in Brigid Kemmerer’s debut adult romantasy trilogy, Braided Fate. Warrior-king Maddox Kyronan has a reputation for ruthlessness with his fire magic but needs an alliance to help his slowly burning kingdom. Princess Jory agrees to a political marriage with Maddox to protect her own realm from invaders despite (or because of) the fact that her family’s weather magic is secretly fading. Assassin Asher is Jory’s best friend since childhood whose Guild has tasked him with killing both the princess and the king she’s promised to. As loyalties waver and an alliance in doubt, the three must decide who they can truly trust—and it might just be each other.

Terrible title aside, this book was simply so much fun, and I loved every second I spent reading it. This is romantasy in its purest form: the romance is front and center with an otherwise barebones plot. The entire story spans just a few days as the characters journey from one kingdom to another and ends rather abruptly with little narrative resolution yet. The The prose is simple, the story straightforward, and it reads very much like YA in tone; though make no mistake, the spice near the end (at about 90%) is anything but PG.

Where the book truly shines is in its characters and the incredible tension between all three of them. I was fully on board with this true triad, and I adored their banter, flirtation, and friction. There’s just so much to love about all three of them. Jory is willful and headstrong despite her sheltered naivety, and that she didn’t annoy me at all speaks volumes. Asher probably has the most emotional depth, a broken man hiding behind bravado, and I was absolutely heartbroken and shed several tears for him. Ky may initially seem like your typical tall, dark, and brooding fantasy male lead, but he reveals surprising nuance as the story unfolds. None of them are perfect with each having clear flaws, but their dynamic together is simply magnetic. The chemistry crackles not just between Jory and each man, but also between Asher and Ky. And that spicy scene? Tender, hot, and somehow both wild and tame at the same time.

Warrior Princess Assassin may be light on plot and heavy on romance, but it knows exactly what it is and completely delivers a scorchingly tension-filled MMF romantasy.

This was so good, I was hooked from the very first chapter and couldn’t put it down. We love a one sitting read!

We follow three POVs:
👑 King Maddox (Ky), a battle-worn ruler with a dying kingdom
🌩️ Princess Jory, a weatherwitch bound to marry for an alliance
🗡️ Asher, her childhood best friend who calls her “my Jory” turned assassin who’s been ordered to kill them both

Their fates crash together on the day of the royal alliance, when Asher is given an impossible choice-carry out the kill order, or risk unleashing more hunters on them all. What unfolds is a tangled story of loyalty, betrayal, and survival, all wrapped in elemental magic and political tension.

I loved the way Ky, Jory, and Asher’s relationships evolved🥹 especially how their loyalty slowly shifted and deepened through shared trauma and impossible choices. The chemistry, the tension, the heartbreak? Perfection. I also adored how the POVs flowed together seamlessly, each one added so much emotional weight and insight into what they were going through.

It’s a solid 4 stars from me. The only reason it’s not a full 5 is because the last twist felt a little rushed, I was still fully immersed in the character bonds, and the ending snuck up on me a bit. But I was still screaming in the best way. It was a bit more character than plot focused but I really can’t complain!

And listen… if you’re asking who does she choose? I’m here to tell you she gets the boy and he gets the boy.
It’s not just messy,it’s magnetic. And frankly, I’m rooting for all three. I was surprised in the best way that this is the road the book is taking! I’m excited for book 2!

“Rest assured, I know how to go to war.”

I fear this book may have ruined me. In the best way.

If you are looking for a Romantasy absolutely full of tension, the slowest of slow burns (did I mention the tension?) intense emotions that will make you want to steal these characters and wrap them in bubble wrap. An extremely interesting plot full of betrayals, so so so many betrayals and political intrigue. Seriously, trust no one. Then this is the book for you.

This is the perfect introduction to Kemmerer Adult Debut Trilogy, nothing was overwhelming (except my pain for these characters backstories) the magic and plot are interesting and unfold definitely add to the story. But it is the relationships where this story really shines, and boy do they shine. From the relationships between Ky and his soldiers, I swear all of the characters are so intriguing! I can’t wait to learn more about them. To the MMF pairing between our main characters. As soon as Kemmerer said the main characters won’t have to choose… I was sold. I could not be more excited for this dynamic.

“Somehow, they each have the talent to wake something inside of me, a flame I thought I smothered years ago.”

The tension. The vulnerability. These characters will leave an impression, that is for sure. Kemmerer has done such a beautiful job of creating such developed relationships between Ky, Jody and Asher. And this is only the first book in the trilogy, I can’t wait to see how their relationships progress. They compliment each other so well. From Ky’s steady strength, his protective instincts are everything. To Asher’s loyalty to Jory, he will do anything for her even to his own detriment. He is ultimately a very dangerous cinnamon roll. Then there’s Jory who by all accounts should be this sheltered innocent princess and she absolutely is but she is also so very strong but this allows her kindness to shine. As the story progresses and she is given the chance you really start to see her character grow. I can already tell she is going to be one formidable FMC by the end of this series and I can’t wait for it.

“Individually or together, they’re both intriguing. Compelling. Striking, if I’m being honest with myself. But they’re also exasperating. Complicated. Messy.”

Oh my poor messy babes. I love these three far too much. The way Ky is with them both is… well it’s honestly beautiful. He’s so gentle but he knows when it push, he can read them both so perfectly.

From the first moment they meet his voice is their downfall. And I can’t blame them. Imagine this great big warrior with this captivating voice. I’d be doomed too.

“He’s so harsh and fearsome that it makes him downright captivating when his voice goes quiet.”

I have such a soft spot for each of them, they each have experienced hardships in totally different ways but it means they can understand each other easier.

I need desperately need some payback for all Asher has been through because the poor guy needs a hug.

“She’s so different from Asher, and I find it fascinating, especially considering their connection. He’s full of violence and rage, and it’s completely unbound. Every time he settles under my touch, it’s like taming a wolf.”
“The princess is the opposite. This feels like freeing a caged falcon and hoping it returns to your hand.”

It is safe to say I am well and truly hooked, I can’t wait to see where Kemmerer takes this story and these characters in the books to come.

This is the first instalment of a fantastic trilogy, I was devastated when I read the last page.
I love the dynamic between these characters and how they understand each other, I am exited to see where this trilogy takes us.

Waaawwww I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting.
The storytelling is so compelling, I was directly put into the story the author doesn’t waste a word, her writing is really pragmatic but at the same time she conveys a lot of emotion. It’s my first time reading a fantasy with a why-choose/throuple trope and it’s weird bc I'm used to heteronormative settings but it didn’t bother me as much as I thought because the plot was so heavily driven by the characters' development that it felt natural? Idk

Little synopsis: Jory is a Princess and she is supposed to be marrying the king of another nation for a political alliance, but she’s already in a situationship with an assassin she’s known her entire life. When this assassins gets kill orders for Jory and for her fiancée, they decide their fate is not ending in bloodshed..

Asher’s backstory: brutal, Ky’s backstory: brutal and even Jory is so lonely. Asher’s story really broke my heart.

The writing really convinced me to pick up the other books of Brigid that I have on my TBR.

The only thing that really sucks is the title of the book. It doesn’t particularly makes you want to read it it’s pretty basic.

Thank you NetGalley and Harper for the ARC, all opinions are my own 🌟

I was not expecting that!

As usual, I went into this book not knowing anything about the plot. I assumed it would be one character taking on the role of Princess, Warrior and Assassin - but nooo, it was three characters. AND I LOVED IT!

I didn't expect the romance that I got, but it was delicious. So tender. So cute. So raw.

This book was such a perfect setup for the next one (which I cannot wait to read)

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for approving me to read this book, I’m rating it 5.0 stars.

This has been a great intro to this new trilogy, the world building, political game playing and romantic entaglements were intriguing. With war on the horizon from various kingdoms and an alliance in the form of marriage is the only chess piece on the board that might just save them.

Multi POV is a win for me always, having POV’s from the warrior (Ky), the princess (Jory) and the assassin (Asher) gave the story a well rounded perspective. These characters had me absolutely giddy, and seeing how it unfolded is chef’s kiss like thank you to the author for bringing the dream to fruition, especially that last 10% cause wow!

The growth of our characters with not only their kingdom issues and the political warfare they navigate, but the way they tackle their personal issues is really well done. The characters personal struggles manifest in very different ways, but the author has taken great care to explore these things in detail.

I would recommend maybe checking your trigger warnings because the book does touch on assault and violence in various ways.

I highly recommend this for your new favourite fantasy read, there’s great characters and banter with romance, political intrigue, arranged marriage and so much more. I’m beyond excited for the next book!

This is my first Brigid Kemmerer book and I found it to be a fun and easy read! I went into it blind, fully expecting a female rage princess turned warrior and assasin, little did I know that the title is giving us the 3 main characters! We get 3 POVs and, honestly, this was by far the best thing about this book. The alternating POVc make the story flow easily and seamlessly and keeps you reading because you get well flsehed out characters and become invested in what is going to happen next. I am not a huge fan of why choose but I do think that Kemmerer developed the poly romance in a great way. There was angst, yearning and it all felt quite believable. I definitely loved Ky the most, he's wonderful! The world building, magic and politics definitely take back seat here, the plot is very much character driven, but I didn't mind at all, made for a very easy to digest reading experience. I actually enjoyed the writing a lot!

I think this book has the potential to do really well and will appeal to a wide audience who seek a romantasy with an original take. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my review copy, all opinions are my own.

Tropes & Themes: Princess x Arranged Marriage to a Neighbouring King x Childhood Best Friend turned Assassin. Spicy, dark pasts, political intrigue, assassination plots, sheltered-but-feisty FMC, and a full-blown thruple (and YES, the MMCs are into each other too — no love triangle drama here!).

Trigger Warnings: Past slavery, past sexual assault and trauma.

Plot: I went into Warrior Princess Assassin with no expectations and I ended up devouring it. What started as a casual read turned into a binge session I couldn’t walk away from. The writing is accessible, the pacing is quick, and the magic system is simple enough to grasp without info dumping. This is definitely a character and romance driven story, with political intrigue and assassination attempts running as a secondary thread, woven well enough to tie everything together and set up an enticing sequel.

I was pleasantly surprised by the romantic dynamic. I had braced myself for a tired love triangle, but instead, we get three people deeply, equally into each other. No jealousy, no toxic drama, just chemistry and connection from all angles. I absolutely loved it! While the assassination subplot was somewhat predictable, it didn’t detract from the story’s impact or enjoyment for me. The real hook here is the characters and their relationships.

Magic System: The magic here is refreshingly straightforward. Ky, our warrior king, commands fire, while Jory a the princess - should inherit elemental powers from her powerful lineage (this power has not revealed itself yet). Their arranged marriage isn’t just political; it’s also a strategic alignment of magical power. Could the system have been more layered or complex? Sure. But did it need to be? Not at all. It served the story perfectly.

World building: The world centres around three neighbouring kingdoms, each grappling with its own internal chaos. I appreciated how the politics weren’t just window dressing, they actively shaped the characters and their choices.

Jory’s awakening to her kingdom’s hidden darkness, after growing up shielded from its cruelty, was handled with emotional depth. In contrast, Ky’s storyline revealed the burdens of a ruler facing wildfires and civil unrest - highlighting the emotional weight of leadership. I also loved the glimpses into the Assassin and Hunter Guild. While grim and traumatic, Asher’s experiences there added a gritty, realistic dimension to the world. The slavery element, while disturbing, was approached with care and served as an important catalyst for Jory’s growth and Asher’s healing.

The Characters:
Jory: A classic sheltered princess, but with a spark. Initially naive (understandably so, given her upbringing), she evolves quickly, making sacrifices for the greater good. Her development may feel a bit fast-paced, but considering the book takes place over less than a week, it’s realistic within that timeframe.

Asher: The emotional core of the book. Every new layer revealed about him broke my heart a little more. His trauma, history as a slave, and complicated past with Jory gave his character real depth. Seeing a male character with this kind of vulnerability and development was incredibly refreshing. His relationship with Ky was especially unexpected and completely stole the show for me.

Ky: I did not expect to love Ky as much as I did. Despite his reputation and formidable fire magic, he’s a soldier first - protective, fierce, and grounded. His romantic connection with Jory is sweet and passionate, but his bond with Asher? That came out of nowhere and was so satisfying.

The Romance: Let me be blunt, if you’re going to have a thruple dynamic, and the men aren’t into each other, I’m not interested. Thankfully, this book gets it right. There’s mutual desire, respect, and love between all parties - no jealousy, no one fighting for dominance. Just equal, passionate connection.

This was my first FMC x MMC x MMC romance, and it won’t be my last. The spice is present but tasteful, a slow burn with just the right amount of heat by the end. It was worth the wait.

Final Thoughts: Warrior Princess Assassin took me by surprise in the best way. With a fast-paced plot, compelling character arcs, and a truly balanced romance, it’s an addictive read that leaves you desperate for the next installment.

If you love; Emotionally complex characters, Mutual, non-toxic polyamorous dynamics, Light but effective magic systems and political scheming with high stakes thus is the one for you!

Bring on book two, I need more Jory, Ky, and Asher immediately!!

Overall I would recommend it, especially if you are into romantasy
with some spice
It is in no way something that you might not expect, but it does in
no way mean that it isn't good. I loved that the story follows the
POV of the three main characters. 1 also liked that we get to know
them, but not entirely as I expect to dive in deeper in the next part of
5. The romance and spice was way too much for me, hence the 3
X
Spolers
Did know that they willend up together? Did tknow that the 'villain
w
will be the good guy or that they were obviously hiding secrets from
Jory? Yes, but did this in any way ruin any of the reading or the story
-no.
The spicy scenes were waaaay too much for me, especially having
to read them from three points of view... to be fair, I am not into
smut or romance,so fir me if those parts were missing, it would
have been better. To be fair, I normally skip over those parts, but
this being an ARC,I wanted to read it all.
I would have liked if the words were built a bit more, but it may have
been left for the rest of the series.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC

2.5 stars. Uh. ... Maybe?

This is sure to be a crowd pleaser, particular if the crowd is into romantasy. But in this recent year I've discovered that I really do need a bit more meat-and-potatoes to my books to enjoy them, and that I need plot. Warrior Princess Assassin has ... some ... plot, a bare whisper of plot, mostly forged to get the three main characters to get into situations that provide sexual tension.

I mean, that was the one thing I liked about this: That this is a threesome. A true "love triangle" if you will, where the two male parts also have the hots for one another. That's cool, I like that, in theory, but ... man, there really was nothing there except that. I'm actually pretty sure that's how the idea for this book came about - three hot people get into a love triangle. The "plot" was just there to nudge them along.

It's a shame in a book that basically only revolves around these three characters and nothing else that I intensely disliked two of them. Marjoriana (now that's a ridiculous fantasy name if I ever saw one!), the titular princess, is a naive pushover. Her only bit of bite she gives in the very first chapter quickly evaporates, and she chances allegiances to either of the men at a drop of a hat. She has no spine at all, and while I've seen other reviewers say that she grew into her power, I saw none of that. She's sheltered and gullible, and the only good characteristics I could see were that she actually listenes to poor people sometimes (emphasis on the sometimes).

ASHER, the one who's name is repeated such multitude of times that I literally break out in hives everytime it happens, is the worst assassin I've ever read about. He doesn't kill a single person on page. The only thing he can apparently do is hang around in rafters and bungle up fights. He also has the personality of a wet sock. Oh, sure, there is a tragic past, but that seems more to be a justification for some other things that just had to happen ... no spoilers, if I could manage to spoil the little plot that there is.

Anyway, I am SO SICK of "main female character is obsessed with childhood best friend". SO SICK OF IT. What is it with this trope that has authors in a chokehold these days? Do people simply not want to write a beginning relationship anymore? To imagine a world where these characters start out already loving each other, because if they wouldn't, they would not have a single thing in common with each other, nothing to lead to a potential friendship, because there's no logical reason for them to like each other - other than, of course, "HE IS MY CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND AND I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT HIM."
I am sick, sick, sick of this trope. If I have to read one again in the next couple of months, I'll scream and throw the book around, I promise.

The saving grace of this throuple was Ky, the warrior king. Not that I can understand how one man can fall in love with these other two assholes, but he was perfection. I love this specific combination of dangerous and gentle, full of rage and still kind. He had an actual motivation, that being saving his kingdom from hunger, and an interesting relationship with his sister, and his guard, and his people. He was just ... so interesting in comparison to the other two. Unfortunately, he is quite obsessed with both of them, which was his only big character flaw. Oh, well. I found myself wanting to know more about him, about his childhood, his growing up on the battle field, the relationship with his father - all the things that were briefly mentioned but never fleshed out. There is a lot of potential here, and maybe it will all come out in future installments, but tbh, I'm not sure whether I'm going to read those.

Yeah. I can see how people would like this, and I'm a little bit sorry I couldn't, but I think my one little opinion can change the potential success this book could find. It's not badly written at all; I just realized in reading this that my genre is less romantasy and more a fantasy with romance, and that maybe I wasn't the target audience for this one. And that's totally okay!

4,5 stars - what love triangles always should look like and be!

I had such a good time with this book! The writing and story was fast paced and easy to get into and keep up with, and I was immediately intrigued by all three main characters. The world was intriguing, though not especially fleshed out beyond the base politics needed to understand where the characters were coming from and meeting each other.

“So desperate to protect each other that they can’t see the harms they’re causing. They’re so wildly chaotic. It’s no wonder they’re in love with each other. It’s a miracle they haven’t gotten each other killed.”

The place this book really shines is the dynamic between the three main characters. We have the warrior King Maddox Kyronan (Ky), the assassin Asher, and Princess Marjoriana (Jory). Asher and Jory are childhood friends in love with each other, Ky and Jory are to be betrothed for a political alliance, and Ky and Asher clash together until they form a bond of trust and security. Their various dynamics with each other and together was so compelling and sweet to read about, and they all make up for each other's strengths and weaknesses. They all have journeys of growth they need to go on, and I found them all so loveable in their messiness.

“I’ve been broken a thousand different ways, but never like this. Never with choice. Never with patience.”

I can’t wait to see where the story goes next, and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves (poly) fantasy romance with a focus on politics, war time, trauma and royalty, on the side of their angst-filled yearning messy love stories.
This was basically exactly what I hoped it would be and I am so happy!

When I say I couldn't put this book down, I really mean it! I read the whole 398 pages in one session, I just couldn't quite bring myself to stop (despite the time ticking from PM to AM and I had work in the morning!).

The characters were what really made this book for me. Asher, Ky and Jory were wonderfully distinct and equally well formed. I think the three POVs really helped with that - getting an insight into how they are thinking, feeling and mostly importantly how they are interpreting the events around them.

This relationship type is somewhat unusual in fantasy romance which is one reason I was dying to read it. I tend to not read many 'why choose' books, not because I have any issue with it, but because i like to see the relationship as a whole, how the dynamics work between people in love. I had my fingers crossed that it would pay off and it really did. When Asher is struggling, Ky grounds him, giving him stability, whereas Jory gives him passion and life, which inspires him. Without one of them, the emotional scale would tip - it needs all three for it to work.

Asher reminded me of Fenris from DragonAge - the world has tried to beat him down and though he feels like it has broken him, there's a hidden strength based in his love for first Jory and then Ky also. Jory is very different though, she has led a sheltered life without ever really knowing it, but she loves her people and is willing to do whatever she has to in order to protect them. As she realises how much she has been kept from the harsh realities of life, instead of crumpling or getting defensive, Jory takes it as a push to do better, a challenge she is ready to conquer.

Ky has such a duality between the two sides of him - the warlord and the paternal king; yet it never feels like a split personality. The two elements of his personality flow into each other to create a three dimensional person with real depth. His journey falling in love, is so smooth you almost fall with him. It feels like the only natural thing for him to do.

We only have glimpses of much of their world, so I am looking forward to learning more now that the story and characters are established. I fell head over heels for 'Warrior Princess Assassin' and I pre-ordered the special edition straight away as I need it on my bookshelf. I will be watching like a hawk for book 2 of the series.

~~I will be posting this review on Instagram on 13th August 2025.~~

Brigid Kemmerer knows how to write in a compelling way that draws you effortlessly into the story.
Unfortunately, despite this, I found nothing really unique or interesting in the story itself. Everything felt... Just there. I finished the book because it was very well written but nothing of the story stayed with me.
I doubt I will pick up the next one

Warrior Princess Assassin follows three characters. Princess Jory’s family’s magic is fading, and they need an alliance with ruthless, fire-wielding Warrior King Maddox Kyronan to keep their home safe. Ky’s kingdom is slowly burning, and he agrees to marry Jory in exchange for her family using their magic to manipulate the weather. Assassin Asher - Jory’s childhood friend - is given a lucrative job he can’t refuse, until he sees the targets. Someone wants Ky and Jory dead. Now Asher must decide what he’s willing to do to protect the woman he loves and the king she’s about to marry.

This is my first book from Brigid Kemmerer, and the premise instantly hooked me. I really enjoyed the three POV’s, with The Warrior’s (Ky) and The Assassin’s (Asher) being my favourite. The two MMC’s felt developed and there was much more to them than meets the eye. Ky has a reputation for being a ruthless killer, but he is really just a man trying to escape the horrors of his past and desperately trying to protect his people. Asher is a deadly assassin, but has endured so much trauma and pain in his lifetime, and although he desperately wants to be loved, struggles to trust others and tolerate physical touch.

Although I enjoyed the two MMC’s, I didn’t love Jory quite as much. She starts off as a naive, ignorant, and slightly whiny princess, and although she has some development by the end of the book, it felt very surface level. She lacked the depth of the other two leads, and I just couldn’t connect with her.

This is a why choose romance, with a romance between all of the main characters. I’ve never read this trope before, but I actually enjoyed it, especially the tension between Ky and Asher. Honestly, I think I may have enjoyed this book even more if it was just a romance between the two male leads, and Jory became a side character.

As for the plot, not much happened in this book. The majority of the book is spent travelling and fending off assassins, which became very repetitive. I also felt that the world-building, magic system, and political intrigue weren’t fully fleshed out. None of the plot twists surprised me.

I feel like this book is definitely setting up for the sequel, which I would be open to reading.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Voyager for providing me with an eARC. All opinions are my own.

I want to begin by thanking NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for the chance to read this arc in return for an honest review.

Let’s begin with the plot. It was simple enough for a royal romantasy book. An arranged marriage, a plot against the King of one country and the Princess of another, and an assassin given the task to carry out said plot. I enjoyed it! I’m always a sucker for political intrigue. The pacing was slow, it took a little too long for them to get from A to B but I was kept interested throughout.

The characters were what made this book, and their relationships. Each character was flawed, traumatised, and multi-layered enough to feel an attachment to each. Even the side characters stood out well, I wanted to spend time getting to know each and every member of Ky’s group.

The relationships were a mixture of complex emotions to start with, and I loved experiencing each POV and how each character was conflicted all throughout.

The writing was easy and simple enough to digest. I enjoyed the use of three point of views. There were times it could have been a little more in depth or detailed, but I enjoyed reading nonetheless. I look forward to the next one.
