this is just the historical read i was hoping it would be. the focus and depth to the characters and our learning of their story was on point.i felt like i was amongst the scenery and really understood more about the hardship of the times especially for the woman at home.
this was about that time period and their lives, but also about so much more. as like with most people there is way more going on for these two both past and present. and events mean it doesnt all come to the fore at the best time for either of them. Effie and Nell were both really well played out characters and i felt like i could picture them in the Scottish scenery around them. the relationship was really well described and i enjoyed reading more about what was going on for the via the culture of the times. the span between the two woman in the first and second world war was an even better addition to the book and to read their growing up in one to adults in the other but also how the first impacts the second was really well done.
this book was everything it should be and i enjoyed it immensely. it feels like id want to read more and more from this author as her writing style felt really skilled and just as if she was born to write.

I received a free copy of, I Whispers in the Glen, by Sue Lawrence, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Sisters Nell and Effie are going through a hard time during the World Wars, 1 and 2. This was a sad read at times but a good read.

Brilliant novel, not at all what I expected as far as the plot is concerned but in a very positive way! Switching from Effie and Nell, mostly, from WWI and WWII in the background, this novel offers a very realistic insight into family life, particularly between both sisters, Nell and Effie. I found it very interesting to experience life in a Scottish village at those times when patriarchy was privileged and its impact on the wife's and children's lives. The characters are very relatable, I love the relationship between both sisters and the Scottish environment.... A very fine novel which I highly recommend!
I received a digital copy of this novel from NetGalley and I have voluntarily written an honest review.
