This is the first book I've read by this author
and it certainly won't be my last!

The story follows the aftermath of the death of a teen girl on Halloween night dressed like the girl in a local tale of ‘Sally in the Woods’, a girl that roams the woods and lures people to their death.

As the police try to determine the truth of the night of the girls death, multiple circumstances and suspects come to light, secrets are revealed and shocking truths are found. Was her death an accident or something more sinister?

Such an unputdownable read loaded with red herrings to keep you guessing! I had my suspicions along the way with multiple characters and was right in some ways, but not others! However, I certainly did not see that ending coming and hooley dooley what an ending! What a twist! Wrapped up nicely! Well played Hannah Richell, well played 👏

One Dark Night by Hannah Richell is a suspenseful and well-written thriller that kept me guessing all the way until the end. The story takes place at Halloween where a group of teenagers are having a party in the woods. A body is found the following morning which adds to the tension and mystery. As secrets slowly come to light, the pressure builds in a really effective way.
The story was told from three different characters point of views.
If you enjoy thrillers with atmosphere, family secrets, and emotional depth, this is a great pick.

I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Thank you to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster UK for the ARC.

One Dark Night was a really good read. I didn’t know until the very end who the murder was, which is a rarity.
The portrayal of separation and the difficulties of co-parenting, and the impact it has on the child was well done.
I became invested in the story and the characters and read it over a couple of days.

My first book by this author, certainly not my last. It's Halloween and in a place haunted by urban myth, a boarding/day school full of teenagers, drink, drugs and jealousy tragedy is not a complete surprise. What happens and who is responsible is the theme. There are twists and turns in the plot and tension ramps up to the end. A compulsive read!
Many thanks to Netgalley/Hannah Richell/Simon & Schuster for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

DNF: too spooky and creepy for me so won’t finish.. however, great characterisation and atmosphere. I found the dual tomelines confusing initially but can see how it would be effective

A fast paced thriller set in a small town follows the investigation into the death of a private school sixth former. Well written, believable characters and a satisfying denouement.

I received a free copy of, One Dark Night, by Hannah Richell, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Ellie has secrets, as most teenagers do, but our her secrets worse? Kids can be cruel to each other, even in high school, where they should have matured and moved past bullying. This was a good read.

One Dark Night by Hannah Richell is a psychological thriller that explores the lingering shadows of the past, the dangers of privilege and the secrets that can unravel an entire community. Set in a small British town, the novel opens with a tragedy that occurs on Halloween. When a body if found after a night in the haunted Sally in the Wood, secrets unravel as Rachel, a school counselor and her ex-husband Detective Ben, try to piece together what happened. Their daughter Ellie, a teenager with her own secrets, becomes a focal point as the investigation reveals troubling truths.
The story is told from multiple perspectives, which kept the suspense high and allowed for a dive into the emotional lives of the characters. The characters are complex and relatable, particularly Rachel's strugles as a mother, Ellie's desperate need to keep her own secrets and Ben's journey as a father caught between his personal and professional worlds.

What makes One Dark Night stand out is the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere. The small town, steeped in local folklore and urban legends, feels alive with secrets and the sense of foreboding is palpable throughout the book. The pacing is perfect, building slowly towards a suspenseful climax. And while the ultimate reveal might not be entirely shocking, the emotional depth and tension keep you hooked until the very end and the way the story is tied up left me deeply satisfied.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster UK for an advanced copy in exchange for my review.

With many thanks to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster for this free arc and I am leaving this unbiased review voluntarily
Hannah Richell's debut blew me away so super excited to be sent the arc of her new book. This did not disappoint and the author well surpassed her debut. The writing is sublime and the descriptive narrative really does capture the atmosphere and the eeriness of the urban legend Sally in the wood. Multilayered with excellent characters that just jump from the pages, the author has a real talent for creating believable people. The plot is solid and with a very good ending that just oozes tension this is a very good, addictive read. Hannah Richell is going to be one of my go to authors for sure and she's getting a huge 5⭐️

Secrets and lies and full of twisty turns. Told in real time which I found added to the tension. I really enjoyed this book and will be buying it for friends to enjoy. A great book club pick.

A young girl is found dead after a Halloween Party and Ellie is scared. She shouldn't have been at the party and her father is the lead policeman on the case.
Rachel is the school welfare officer but also Ellie's mum and she knows Ellie is hiding something.
Everyone has a secret and can Ben, Ellies father bring about a conclusion

This book evokes all the feelings of a spooky dark night in the woods. I found it quite chilling in places and it certainly kept me turning the pages to see how it all came together in the end.
The story centres around Rachel and her daughter and the situation they find themselves in as a member of the school that Rachel teaches in and her daughter attends, is found dead in very strange circumstances.
Everyone is a suspect and just when you think you know who did it, there’s another plot twist to keep you guessing.

An enjoyable light murder mystery tale with plenty of twists, turns and red herrings along the way. Good characters with an interesting diverse mix.

This is the first book I have read by this author – it certainly won’t be the last! I was initially enticed by the synopsis: ‘When the body of a young woman is discovered in the woods the morning after Halloween, arranged with ritualistic precision, teenager Ellie has more reason than most to be afraid…’

This precis really set me up for a gripping and atmospheric read. The characters are well written and believable, even if they are not all likable (I simply didn’t warm to Ben, no matter how hard I tried). I did like that the main characters are all dealing with their own anxieties: past indiscretions, dark secrets, the pressure of fitting in and being ‘good enough’ – both in real life and on social media, giving each of them motive to commit the murder. The tale is also heaving with surprising twists that kept me guessing right up to the satisfying reveal.

Overall, ‘One Dark Night’, is an atmospheric, character-driven murder mystery and the addition of the ghost story, albeit subtle, adds an eerie vibe, which I loved. Highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were all relatable and I must admit to not guessing who "dunnit".

The only down side, I felt it was a little slow in the beginning but when it took off I kept finding excuses to read!!. At one point I asked my husband to put the film on that we had been watching and realised it wasn't anything we had been watching but the book I was reading. Need I say more.

Will definitely recommend to friends.

Thanks to NetGalley & Rachael Quin for the ARC
