Hmmm… I think I see what this is trying to do, and it could be said to succeed in that. But I wondered if that result, and how it was achieved, was enough. Or if I'm even correct in saying that. It's about a lad whose father, grandfather, etc are/were all pilots – but who wishes to explore the depths of the sea. And so, armed with a bubble blown by his dad, he does – so is this a metaphorical look at the delights to be had once you've gone to the darkest depths? Or is it just a look at how the apple can actually fall far enough from the tree to have a very different approach to life? I think this has to be thought of as a little flawed in not pinning down its intent firmly enough – and if that's the case for me, I dread to think what a younger me would have thought. Visually this is strong, but the story was a bit of a mish-mash for me. It's deemed as being about the bravery to be the first in your family to do a certain thing, but this came across as a touch clumsy in proving that the case. Certainly it won't be every kid who takes to this – two and a half stars.

A stunning piece of art and a beautiful story to share. I think this is a story that all children can enjoy, but also I think an impactful story for the adults in their lives too.

Sometimes it is scary to explore the unknown, just as it is scary to let children go and make their own journeys. This beautiful book shows us that sometimes the other side of that fear is where beautiful things lie.

Also a gorgeous portrayal of fathers and sons.

A book I cannot wait to share with the children and families I support in my job!
