I think this book will appeal to a lot of my students, the ones that like romance, the one that like mysteries, and esp cold case, even those that love music festivals even though that is the scene of the missing women from the past. It is also easy to read which they appreciate

This is a fast moving , easy to read romantic suspense novel. Told in two timelines, 1995 at a music festival where four young woman disappeared and were presumed dead. The current timeline had one of the woman's daughter, now a reporter looking into the case. She is an interesting woman, unable to feel, acts out her "emotions" and goes hard after finding the truth

I'm a huge Mary Burton fan so I was excited this was a "read now". It is a back and forth timeline so u do have to pay attention, but it has all the twists and turns I've come to love about Mary's books. Don't miss it!

Mary Burton delivers another tightly wound thriller with What She Saw. I was immediately drawn into Sloane Grayson’s emotional journey as she digs into the decades-old disappearance of her mother and three other women. The dual timeline worked beautifully, keeping the suspense high as past and present slowly collided. I appreciated how Burton layered the mystery with deeply personal stakes, making Sloane’s quest feel raw and urgent. Some characters were hard to fully trust, which added to the tension, and the twists kept me guessing until the very end. Though a few parts slowed slightly in the middle, the ending was satisfying and packed a real punch. Fans of emotional, character-driven mysteries will definitely enjoy this book.

Mary Burton has done it again.! What She Saw is full of intrigue, detailed character development, and carries you along throughout. The book leaves you wondering right up until the end. The intertwined story lines kept me wondering how it would all tie together. I love a book where the ending is not what you predicted. Have fun guessing.

As always, Mary Burton has written a very readable mystery. A number of surprises throughout. I guessed right on one part but was totally surprised by another part of the story. This story keeps you guessing right up until the end. Excellent ending all-in-all. Love Ms. Burton’s writing so much.

This is a dual-timeline book switching between the music festival where 4 women disappeared and the current day where Sloane, a writer and the daughter of one of the women, is trying to find out what happened to their bodies. I didn’t find Sloane very likeable, hence the 4 stars rather than 5. Perhaps her upbringing as the illegitimate child of a murdered woman, a man who is in prison for murdering 3 others and being raised by a grandmother who didn’t want to be bothered may account for her persona. Her methods often cross over into illegal, which also allows her to find proof that the police cannot.

I received a complimentary copy of this book "What She Saw" and all opinions expressed are my own. This story kept me interested as I wanted to see "who done it". Fast paced and I was invested in the whole thing.

I definitely enjoy Mary Burton's books and I have for years her books lately are just a bit different and are a bit edgier. This one is set in small town Dawson, Virginia. It spans three decades. Its told by Sloane a cold case reporter. Her cold case this time is different because she is looking for the bodies of murdered girls from 1994 and one of them is her mother!! This story is told by Sloane and Sheriff CJ Taggert which explains the past and brings us clues but just as many questions. As Sloane makes her way in the town of Dawson she interviews as many people that will talk about the festival and the 4 girls that went missing including the present sheriff! She has someone looking out for her in Sergeant Grant McKenna. As sparks fly between them he even brings a little surprise. I did figure out one thing but was blown away by others! Sloane was a bit different in this story but she definitely makes you think and I believe that is the idea! Believe me she does an awesome job of bringing all the loose ends to a close, even Sloane might have a few positive changes in the future. I give "What She Saw" a solid 4 stars and recommend this one to readers! I want to thank Mary Burton, NetGalley and Montlake publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Absolutely thoroughly enjoyed this who done it. Sloane comes to town. To look into the music festival four. Being thirty years later, she is meet with resistance. Which leads her to conquer on. With determination can she prove or disprove Colton was guilty. And if he had an accomplice. The major goal is to find the victims. So the families can get closure.

In this well planned and well written book, you meet a very unique main character, Sloane. She is an investigative journalist who focuses on unsolved murders, especially of the disenfranchised members of our society, and she is very good at what she does. Sloane is uniquely equipped to handle the emotional roller coaster that dealing with death and violence can bring. Social workers from her childhood suggested that she may have sociopathic tendencies, but in Sloane, these tendencies do not manifest in cruel behavior. Instead, she is spurred to engage in on-the-edge behavior in an effort to feel emotions. She also has a keen sense of right and wrong which is her motivating force behind her desire to seek justice for the victims. She doesn’t like bullies, she can easily spot a liar, and is able to study body language to help her get a lot more out of an interview than just the spoken words.
In this particular case, Sloane is investigating the disappearance and presumed murders of four teenage girls, one of whom was her own mother. They all attended an outdoor concert in a small town and were never seen again. That was thirty years ago. Thirty years is a long time for memories to rewrite themselves and for the guilty to perfect their story, and digging out the truth will not be easy. Although someone was tried and convicted of the crime, he has always maintained his innocence. However, he is now up for a possible release from jail, so the clock is ticking on this case from the moment it begins.
The storyline is told in both the past and the present, allowing the reader to develop their own theories as each chapter reveals new clues. You will meet characters both alive and dead, and as Sloane puts together the pieces of the puzzle you will probably find yourself not quite knowing for sure until the very last pages. If you fancy yourself a bit of an armchair detective, then this is the book for you.

Sloane a true crime reporter is taking on the story of her life. What happened to her mom Patty? Four women are missing from a music festival and the suspect is in jail but Sloane doesn't think that's the full story of what happened that night at the festival. Searching through multiple clues she searches not only for the bodies but the truth. This was a great mystery and you never figure out what happened till the twisty ending. Love this book the perfect amount of mystery and I really liked Sloane. I would love if this turned into a series. Great book definitely recommend!

Wow!! I knew this was gonna be a good one, but....WOW!!! A real page-turner!! Thank you so much, Mary Burton, for the ARC! Loved the dual story line!! A cold case of four missing women. They attended a Music Festival in 1994. By the end of the festival, these four young women were gone, without a single trace. Thirty-five years later, Sloane, the daughter of one of the missing, takes on the cold case to learn what happened to her mother and the other three that fateful night. A night that placed a man in prison and who was due to be released on parole. Did he do what he was convicted of thirty plus years ago? There were no bodies, not a single clue as to what happened. Will Sloane find the answers others couldn't? Or will the truth cost her everything, including her own life? I highly recommend this one and wish I could've given it more than 5 stars!!

My first read by this author. Unfortunately this didn't hold my attention and I couldn't see it through to the end. My apologies. Thank you for the arc.

I really enjoyed. this book! I like that Sloan isn't a perfect character - she is flawed, a bit of a sociopath but one thing she DOES care about is finding out what happened to the victims of unsolved crimes.
I love that she came to this case from the perspective of finding the women's bodies vs. "Who did it" because honestly, we are still asking that question throughout the book. I did think I had things figured out a few times but I'm happy to say that I was pretty wrong about just about everything I thought I figured out!
I enjoyed the dual POVs going back and forth between when the crimes occurred through Taggert's perspective and today through Sloan's perspective. The twists and turns throughout the book kept me interested and constantly trying to work it out myself.
Overall, What She Saw will keep you on your toes!
Thank you Montlake for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I know it’s a bit cliche to say that a book grabs you from page one, but What She Saw by Mary Burton completely grabbed me from the first chapter and didn’t let up. The story is a gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The story centers around Sloane Grayson, a cold case reporter who returns to her small hometown to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of her mother and three other women during a music festival three decades ago. The author creates a tale of suspense, nostalgia, and the quest for truth, creating an atmospheric setting in a small Virginia mountain town. The story is also told from various perspectives along a 30-year timeline.
Sloane’s determination to dig deeper into a supposedly closed case brings a compelling layer of complexity to the narrative. The memories of the victims and the unresolved questions surrounding their fate resonate throughout the novel, which pulls me into Sloane’s relentless pursuit of answers. The relationships she rekindles with family members and witnesses, coupled with the chilling presence of the incarcerated killer who maintains his innocence, create a tension that drives the plot forward.
The author’s writing is vivid and engaging, effectively capturing the characters’ emotions while painting a portrait of a community grappling with its dark past. As secrets begin to unravel and Sloane inches closer to the truth, the story takes unexpected twists and turns that leave you questioning what will happen.
Overall, What She Saw is a well-crafted mystery. I would highly recommend this book.

Mary Burton never disappoints. This is a really great read, I loved the way the chapters alternated between the present and the past although I found it sad to realise that these vibrant young women were destined to disappear that night. I had several suspects in mind while reading the book but I have to say that not for a moment did I even consider the true identity of the killer. I almost had to pick my jaw up off the floor. This is a standalone book which I can't recommend highly enough. If you are a new reader of Mary Burton's books I envy you. You have some fantastic reads ahead of you.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book

I swear, Mary Burton cannot write a bad book! I should know. I have read them all! She always comes up with fresh takes on her storylines. Here we have Sloane. Sloane's mother went missing in 1994 from a music festival along with 3 other women. The bodies were never found. The festival promoter was convicted of the crimes and has always maintained his innocence. Sloane is not completely convinced of his guilt either. I loved Sloane. She was a fun Main character. We also hear from Taggart, the sheriff from back in '94 who was never quite satisfied with the case wrap-up, and we get the killer's POV. All POV's intersected quite nicely and there are a lot of twists and turns. Once again, well done, Mary. Look forward to next time!
Thank you to #NetGalley, Mary Burton and Montlake Books for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I will post my review to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Instagram and other retail and social media sites upon publication.

What She Saw is a gripping mystery thriller that weaves together present-day investigation with unsettling past events. The story follows a detective unraveling the mystery of several murdered girls, as the plot jumps back and forth through time. While the time shifts was really intriguing I did find things to get confusing at times. The mystery still kept me hooked.
The strength of this book lies in the question of who and what really happened. You really have to just pay attention to what’s happening and what time timeline you’re in.
Overall, What She Saw is an engaging thriller with a solid mystery at its core. The ending wrapped everything up really well and I enjoyed this book.

A rainy afternoon, snuggled in a blanket, and a cup of tea, this book is going to be the thing that will wake you up! It was SO good! I could not get over the twists and turns and the ending. Loved it!
