An absolute delight, the children were entranced by the story of island life. The adults were rather keen on it too. Reading this really made our weekend, thank you.

Ghostlines by Katya Balen is a beautifully lyrical story of belonging and finding your place in the world. Set on the remote Island of Ayrie, where everyone knows each other’s stories and the rhythms of the land, the novel follows Tilda, who cherishes the familiarity and beauty of her home. When newcomer Albie arrives, Tilda’s attempts to connect with him lead her to the forbidden old island, rumoured to be haunted. Through their journey, the story explores the invisible threads that connect us to our surroundings and to each other, and how the concept of home can stretch and change. It’s a quiet masterpiece—moving, magical, and deeply human.

An intriguing tale that draws you in. There’s something special about being invited into island life, and I loved the depictions of growing up on this fictional island. It’s mainly friendship and adventure but with some mystery thrown in.
