I struggled with this one; it was written in the 90s and certainly reflects the time within which it was written, particularly in its use of slurs. And even with the author being a Black gay man, the writing out of internalised racism, homophobia and misogynoir still made for uncomfortable reading. This said, Part 1 and 3 do do a good job of exploring how childhood shaped the author’s identity. But Part 2, about Dorothy Dean, just seemed derogatory and anomalous.
