Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

‘The World’s Game’ deals with some difficult and often nebulous subject matter. It is, by no means, easy or simple to canvass the entirety of the western world, particularly in a single volume.

I found that this book, while it did address a number of historical events, neglected others that I thought would have had reasonable relevance to the material too. We also often get the personal musings of the author, which are fine, but sometimes they do rather get in the way of what is trying to be accomplished.

The structure of this book is sometimes a little difficult too. While it begins as somewhat linear, it ends up taking a different turn and things felt a little jumbled. At the same time, I do think that a more structured approach would have been somewhat frustrating, so I can understand it as a stylistic choice.

I did enjoy, however, that this book took a unique approach to a lot of the issues facing our world today that we have faced in different iterations over the centuries. The writings on anti-semitism were particularly interesting, and this book serves as a helpful reminder that there are many different opinions out there- all with their own merits in different ways.
