According to theologian Paul Tillich, the ground of Being is the fundamental nature of the physical universe, how it functions and continues to evolve. The psychologist Carl Jung addresses the problem of the absence of meaning in people's lives. The authors feel that the theological core of a modern religion must be understood to derive from the nature of reality itself if its beliefs and practices are to have a redemptive role in society today.
While developing their ideas, the authors deemed it essential to discuss ancient Greek wisdom, envisioning the world of the senses as being fashioned upon a higher reality. The ancients promoted a natural religion, recognizing the spiritual depth existing within reality. They felt this wisdom is rooted in human experience, particularly the transcendent.
The authors discuss consciousness deeply, expanding its presence beyond living beings to the entire universe. Consciousness in this expanded view is potential consciousness. In this manner, consciousness can provide purpose and meaning to life.
The authors recognize that religion's current rigid system of dogma does not satisfy man's spiritual quest for meaning. The current social and political crises cannot be solved solely by materialism. The insights of Paul Tillich and Carl Jung can provide a more vital spiritual force in people's lives.
The authors argue that humanity is evolving toward a new creation in which life's sacred depth will become the guiding light for all spiritual and religious practices.
