I confess I never heard of Syaman Rapongan until picking up this book - and that was only the tip of what “Eyes of the Ocean” had to offer. From all the details he provides on Tao culture and beliefs, the tensions and difficulties that arrive from growing up Indigenous in Han and Mandarin speaking-dominant Taiwan, I frankly felt like I learned an appreciatively immense amount. I also of course greatly enjoyed sharing in Rapongan’s telling of his life story to date, and between this and the aforementioned knowledge I was gifted on an array of different topics relevant to his life as an indigenous Taiwanese, this proved to be a most enjoyable read.
