Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love the art style, which is a fun mix of pastel and gore, which I was a little surprised by as that isn't really reflected by the cover. I actually preferred some of the other cover concepts detailed at the end, despite being drawn to this book by the existing cover, as they were more aligned with the rest of the art throughout.
The concept is pretty original, each of the main characters is likeable and funny. The monster (the big bad) is super cool and creepy. The dialogue flows smoothly and there are some great lines in the narrative.
There are some plot points that felt really underdeveloped, such as Motley & Harrison's history with Glenn and what has actually happened to Ashley/what it means to be a ghoul and why. There isn't quite enough resolution for me, as a result.
However I would definitely read more instalments in this series as I think it has a lot of potential to explore.
3 stars

The cover is what drew me in. I'm going to be honest it never once lived up to it. I wanted to love this so bad. But it was another idea that I feel like could've been great, that was just okay.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Blood and gore, death, and animal death.
“From cartoonist Meredith McClaren (co-creator of the acclaimed series Black Cloak) comes a punishing and poignant original graphic novel about the monsters that lurk both in the darkness beyond—and within—us all . . .
Let it be said that dying is hard. Nineteen-year-old Ashley Moore found this out firsthand.” — the Goodreads page for 'Meat Eaters'.
// Pre-read: I'm so looking forward to this, it looks super interesting and full of action, drama and horror.//
"All Ashley wanted was to keep her head down until she could escape the small town where she felt she was stagnating. But after waking up one night covered in blood—and irrevocably dead—Ashley finds her foolproof plan for getting out has gone up in smoke, and that something within her has changed." — the Goodreads page for 'Meat Eaters'.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel, it bought me much happiness to be reading a book with so many gory illustrations. Meredith is very talented and I adore the style of her art immensely. Being an artist myself, I can appreciate original art, and do.
It is a story of a 19-year-old Ashley who wakes up very different than when she was awake last, not only has her appetite changed, and she has no heart beat. Join her and her newly found friends in a savage journey that grabs others' attention.
The plot is exciting and the illustrations really do make this story what it is, and the werewolves are portrayed in a new, refreshing way — in a way that really compliments the entire story from start to finish.
There were no errors, no parts that I didn't understand and because of all oft his, the graphic novel 'Meat Eaters' has thoroughly earned it's five stars.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Meredith McClaren is an American author and illustrator who is well known for her distinct style with her art and her storytelling. Born in 1987 it makes her 38-years-old and she started drawing in her early years because she was passionate.
'Meat Eaters' is her forth published novel and I reckon it's the best one I've read so far, I want to read all of her work as soon as I can. I'm just disappointed that this wasn't longer.. I was pretty sad when it ended.
I think I am going to have to buy it when it comes out properly to add to my graphic gore folder I'm obsessed and I highly recommend this to anyone that love gore in their graphic novels. You won't regret buying this, at all.

I enjoyed this horror graphic novel. It was an intriguing story with interesting characters. A real page-turner where the main character is trying to figure out the mystery of what happened to her. She has to adapt to her new circumstances. And the artwork is great. Horror fans will like this one.

"Dear diary, am I a freakin’ zombie?" Ashley wants nothing more than to find her place beyond her small town. She has a clear plan: work hard and avoid people until she can transfer from community college to somewhere out of state. Her plan is derailed when she wakes up with no heartbeat and a craving for meat, and no memory of how or why she's changed. Readers will be thrust into the world of Creepies, supernatural beings hidden from the human world, as Ashley tries to uncover the cause of her newfound undeadness. In what could have been a gore-fest run-of-the-mill monster story, McClaren brings a surprising amount of heart with a narrative that centers on themes of found family, resilience, and overcoming trauma. Stunning artwork, fourth-wall breaking, and memorable characters make this an inviting read for graphic novel novices and veterans alike.

I really liked this one!!
The story is short but I really loved the art style and the themes in it. I would’ve liked some backstory to how different undead creatures of this world interact and view each other but considering the story is from Ashley’s pov who doesn’t want to embrace this part of herself due to how dramatic her death was I think it’s reasonable she doesn’t want to get into the history that much. I only wish the author would’ve made it darker and really leaned into the horror perhaps body horror thing more. The book isn’t marked as YA but it does somewhat feel YA simply because for me personally it could’ve been much darker. I also would’ve liked to learn more about what exactly Ashley is because from my knowledge of undead she doesn’t fit one specific creature. Or even I would’ve liked more details about her species if you will.
I really hope the author puts out more horror works in the future as this was very promising!

This was so freaking fun! If anyone if familiar with Teen Wolf on MTV, this is very similar vibes to that. Going into this, I thought it was going to be a gory horror kind of story. And while there was gore and horror, there was actually so much more to it. There was mystery and intrigue and I just couldn't put this book down once I started. Ashley was such a relatable character. I'm an only child, so I absolutely understand Ashley's disdain for socializing and wish to just be alone. It's what's comfortable. But there really is no better feeling than finding your people, and Ashley really did that with the wolves. They care for her despite her flaws and bring her out of her comfort zone and let her see the best of herself.
I thought this was going to be a standalone story, but there is definitely so much room for this to be a long arcing series, so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for that.

From cartoonist Meredith McClaren, Meat Eaters is an awesome graphic novel about the monsters lurking beyond and withing is all.
It was my first graphic novel in years so I struggled a bit to follow the plot. But the second read helped.
The graphism is top notch and the whole book is a gem. This cover catched my eyes initially and I didn't regret it.
I like the "behind the scene" bonuses at the end of the comic, it gives more information about Meredith's creative process and how Meat Eaters is born.
My favorite part is definitely the unexpected bond between the three mains characters, despite their differences, the acceptance and need for bonds and support you can feel between them. I really like the messages that Meredith tried to convey. And she manag d it well on a pretty fast pace settlement.
I really rooted for Ashley and I loved some of the "internal monologue" she has with herself when she tried to understand what happened to her and what she became.
I'll definitely keep an eye to Meredith work for more content.

Seems like the worst art in this book was chosen for the cover, which is an odd choice. It doesn't give a good sense of the creator's glossy, darkly pastel-goth art style, which I really enjoyed.
This is a offbeat story of a girl who survived a Very Bad Thing, though perhaps "survived" is overselling it, and is trying to figure out who and what she is now. She doesn't really know who she is anymore, or what she's capable of. I enjoyed the chaotic world of the creeps, and I found all the weirdos in her orbit to be charming in their own ways, but this story didn't really come together for me until the end. Up until the final section, this was a visually striking dark fantasy/horror narrative, but at the very end it clicked for me what this story was "about." Actual people don't have to navigate life as a ghoul, so that's all hypothetical and fun... but people DO have to figure out how to live once their sense of bodily autonomy has been permanently challenged. Ashley's story engaged with these themes in a way that didn't feel didactic, or like a statement, but still folded in elements of the real world that made "Meat Eaters" work on multiple levels.
Also, there is a creature in here that I've never seen depicted before, and HOT GODDANG is it creepy AF.
If you like horror comics and dark humor, and/or if you've ever felt totally shut out from the 'normal world' after an experience that altered your perception of yourself forever, highly recommend this. I think it's a standalone but I'd read more in an artificial heartbeat if it turned out to be a series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the ARC.

You grow to love these characters within the first couple of meetings. I enjoyed the story and really hope there will be another! I hope our ghoul finds happiness

A girl turned into a ghoul meets some of the other undead inhabitants of her town, including two werewolves at her community college who take her into their pack. This had a lot of potential but it felt disjointed. It wasn't exactly hard to follow but it did feel like it was jumping around a lot of the time. I wish we'd had more time to get to know the characters and the world.

LOVE LOVE LOVE
This is what I want out of this type of graphic novel. It's fun, the characters are lovable, and it weaves the story together so well. Hands down, pick up Ashley's story.

FIVE FKING STARS. This book was SO GOOD. I love a monster story, and Meat Eaters totally delivers. Ashley is thrown into the deep end of her new undead life, and the mystery surrounding how and why she became undead adds such an intriguing layer to the story. Watching her navigate her new dietary preferences, life changes, and relationships, especially with her found family, was honestly a blast. I am desperate for more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the ARC.

2.5 stars. The artwork is great but this was really hard to follow. The illustrations were more artistic than actually help tell the story. I was confused for so much of this. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC

It's fascinating getting to see McClaren's more cartoony style applied to horror and gore, but damn these two tastes go well together.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!
This graphic novel was ok. The art was interesting but it kinda dragged in some places. I liked Ashley a lot and I could feel the pain of her situation. The werewolves were cool and I liked their friendship with Ashley. I enjoy stories that explore supernatural beings all together in one world and if there were zombies, werewolves, and vampires all living together that would be the coolest thing ever.

"Meat Eaters" by Meredith McClaren is about a girl named Ashley who wakes up in the woods and soon discovers that she has become undead. The comic is about navigating her new life as an undead creature while dealing with other supernatural creatures.
This comic is intriguing, funny, heartwarming, and creepy. It's full of interesting characters and creatures. The artwork is unique and pretty.
I loved "Meat Eaters" and hope that it is made into a series!
Thank you Oni Press and NetGalley for sending me an ARC of this great comic

Things that go bump in the night are some of my favorite things. Lurking, always watching, and blood thirsty. Makes my heart happy. That’s what the cover of this book did. It made me stop in my tracks as a smile grew on my face. If you know me, that’s rare.
What I hoped for was the story to be as intense and interesting as the cover. Sadly, it wasn’t. While parts were gory and absolutely delicious, some of this was boring. The art style just wasn’t what I was expecting. Compared to the cover, they were very different.
With all of that said, I will definitely read more of this series. I believe this has a lot of potential. Really have high hopes for this.

Meat Eaters was a refreshing read that left me wanting more. Ashley wakes up dead with no recollection of how she died or why she's now undead. She also has a serious craving for meat that she's trying to sustain. In her search for answers, she runs into other teens who appear normal on the surface but are actually creatures of the supernatural kind. As she starts to piece together what happened to her, a bigger threat appears, putting her and her new friends in danger. With an original art style and a story that blends humor, mystery, and a little gore, it's a fun read that stands out from typical horror graphic novels. Though I liked it, I still walked away confused. We never find out what happened to Ashley or what kind of undead being she is. Some of the action moves way too fast, making it difficult to keep up with the story. Still, I would be interested in reading another issue to see how the story plays out and hopefully, get an answer to these questions.

if I had a nickel for every time I read a comic where the cover was the best part, I'd have far too many nickels what is happening??? The art style inside was insultingly bad, why are we saying "merp" in the year 2025, and why was this so boring and explained nothing
