A fantastic adventure in a magical realm featuring goats? Sign me up!

The story was absolutely incredible! Top notch, would totally want to read more fun stories set in this world - it reminded me of Avatar, although not as political (which I kinda wanted too) and touch bit predictable (but I did not mind).

The story was fun, there's humour, there's drama, there's sadness, there's GOATS! And there is romance - which was really nice, although a tad bit underdeveloped.

This graphic novel was a lot of potential.

The art style was really nice, I just wanted it to be more fluid.

The story looked promising, and it had a rather interesting setting; but unfortunately, it developed very slowly and didn't fully engage me.
I didn't like the art; it seemed very crude.

Despite everything, I'm sure someone will like this story, as the dilemmas the protagonists face manage to create empathy.

Village goat herder Trill yearns for a life beyond her mountain pastures. On a journey to the village, she encounters Alya, a Princess who is cursed to turn into a goat at each sunrise. Alya seeks refuge in Trill's herd and, as she discovers her new friend's talents, they embark on a journey together to try and break the spell.

As promised in the title, this graphic novel really delivered on goats and magic! The herd were adorable, and I enjoyed the different personalities of all the goats in Trill's little group. Trill's humour really shone too, and I enjoyed watching Alya and Trill's friendship form, as they learnt to trust each other.

The illustrations were just gorgeous, and really portrayed the vibe of the story well. Goat Magic was a sweet tale about identity, and accepting yourself as you are, and it was just such a lovely, warm hug of a book.

this is a very cute fantasy middle grade graphic novel. I want to say the characters might be a little older than middle grade but it reads like middle grade.

I don't remember their names so I apologize in advance but you have this goat herder who has goat magic and can essentially speak to goats and she sets out on this trek for something. I honestly cannot remember why she leaves home but she's going on an adventure with the goats and she stumbles upon these two scary looking dudes looking for their their goat and when she finds the goat it is badly taking care of and so she steals the goat and goes on her way.

turns out the stolen goat is actually the princess who is under a curse to turn into a goat everyday and back to a girl nightfall. so the two get to know each other and learn about each other's family and history is and each gained some insight into a different perspective than their own as well as start to fall for each other.

this is technically a sapphic story but because it's kids there's no on page anything. I want to say the kiss at some point but it's more that they're like together and working together and being together as a team than anything explicitly romantic if that makes sense. I hope I'm portraying that well enough that it's not done in a way that like minimizes the sapphickness of the story just makes it appropriate for young readers.

anyway this was really cute and I did enjoy it and what recommend it

This is a story I never thought I needed. A magical goat herder meeting a princess is a relationship I had such a fun time reading. There were battles, mayhem, and wonderful characters.

A sweet story with cozy-fantasy appeal. The setting has lots of fun, creative details - cool fantasy landscapes, architecture, food, and creatures. There are also some interesting political conflicts around the monarchy, and the story doesn't gloss over them for a simplistic ending, which is cool. The romance is subtle but nice.

I wanted to read this book since I have liked a couple other graphic novels by the publisher. This is a very simple book with a straightforward storyline except for some unexpected twists. These twists come in the form of detours that stories like this usually do not take.

The world is a magical place, quite literally since magic is spread throughout the world with several people having some level of ability. The two main characters are from opposite sides of the spectrum. One is a restless goatherd from a remote area with restless ideas and the ability to understand goats. The other is the princess who feels like a failure and is in big trouble.

There’s a romance mixed in as well. The fight sequences are sudden and entertaining, as are the goats. The end notes add more to the story as the author elaborates on the smaller details.

I would definitely recommend this book too fans of graphic novels.

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

Goat magic
This was such a magical and enchanting read! This fantasy graphic novel tells the story of two girls—one a goat herder with the rare gift of communicating with her goats, and the other a princess cursed and transformed into a goat. Their paths intertwine as they embark on a quest to save the kingdom, and along the way, they each begin to discover their own strength, purpose, and perhaps even a little love.

The narrative feels both whimsical and empowering, and the stunning art style brings the story to life so beautifully. It’s the kind of book that sweeps you away with its charm, while also leaving you smiling long after you’ve turned the last page.

This was so good! I'm not usually one for historical fantasy, but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a great story, it flowed really well, and didn't have any gaps in the story. It was very pleasant!

A sweet, beautifully illustrated graphic novel about trust, broadening your horizons, and learning to see your own value in the wider context of community, Goat Magic is great for those who love the quiet heroism in many Ghibli films.

What's not to love about two kids from disparate backgrounds navigating magic, politics, and, for one, turning into a goat every day.

Trill's magic lets her talk to goats. Alya, a princess, is attacked and hit with a Shrek-style curse that turns her into a goat during the day. She runs into Trill while Alya is evading men set on her capture. The two adventure together, seeking a way to reverse Alya's curse. The journey opens Alya's eyes to the many injustices in the kingdom. The two grow closer and together start building a better world for all the kingdom's residents.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It balances plot and character development, with secondary characters that are just as interesting and complex as the main ones. There were a few plot twist I didn't anticipate. The developing romance was cute (if romance isn't your thing, no worries - this was a VERY minor part of the story).

Thank you to NetGalley and Publishers for this ARC.

A light hearted queer adventure, with lovely illustrations staring a magical goat herder and a cursed princess.

While this has nice character arcs for younger readers, I found the overall story a little to simple.

In one word, Goat Magic is delightful. This middle-grade fantasy graphic novel is full of charm, lovable characters, and, perhaps most importantly, fantastic goat art.

Trill, a spirited goat herder with a special talent (aka magic) for communicating with her flock, meets Princess Alya, who’s been cursed to turn into a goat during the day. What follows is an adventure full of magic, danger, friendship, and a gentle romance, all wrapped up in vibrant, immersive artwork. The world feels bold and lived-in, and the goats themselves are full of personality: expressive, funny, and endearing. Honestly, the best part for me.

Both Trill and Alya are distinct, relatable, and grow meaningfully over the course of the story. Their relationship is a joy to watch blossom. The worldbuilding and magic system are sprinkled with unique touches (especially the goat magic, come on), and I loved how the book uses magical education to explore themes of class divide and unequal opportunities for young readers.

That said, I think I might have been a bit too old for this one, or maybe just not in the right mood. It sometimes felt a little overhanded with its messaging, and the plot was fairly predictable. The beginning also had some slightly awkward pacing on Alya’s side of the story, but things smoothed out quickly.

Overall, this is a wholesome, gorgeously illustrated adventure with solid themes and truly outstanding goat illustrations. Middle-grade fantasy fans are going to love it.

- Great for anyone who loves goats, magic, gays, and dnd (the main character started as a dnd character!)
- I enjoyed the art and story, I didn’t expect the small and big twists. The world felt well developed and I enjoyed the exploration of how the magic has been slowly oppressed over the years, the politics and motivation of the antagonist added depth to the story.
- This will be another of my favorites for the year and I will be buying it for my goat famer friend!

Goat Magic is a queer graphic novel with unique world-building and characters. I absolutely loved the art, as well, and how it brought the story to life.

This book was very readable and it had some twists I didn't see coming. I highly recommend it to young and old readers alike!

A big thank you to Oni Press and NetGalley for the eARC. All thoughts shared here are my own.

Big thank to you NetGalley and Oni Press for a free copy of this comic in exchange for an honest review!

A cursed princess must team up with a magical goat herder in order to save her kingdom from an unexpected foe. Along the way they both find hidden strengths, newfound confidence, and a bond between them that carries its own kind of magic.

Everything about this graphic novel appears so light-hearted and cozy: the sweeping pastoral landscapes, the emphasis on emotional development, and the goats, oh the goats. If you have a middle schooler or know anyone that is obsessed with goats, this is the comic for them. Kate makes each of them so adorable with their own distinct personalities that it really is impossible not to get attached to them all.

I also really liked the development of both of the leads. Each got their arc completed in a rounded and satisfying way and I think it helped in making the story engaging and relatable. I also liked the plot thread of acknowledging past faults and compliance in a faulty system and working towards making it better.

If I had the smallest gripe, it would be that even now and again a certain action wouldn't flow right from panel to panel, making me a little confused in the sequence, but really this only happened one or two times. The paneling is mostly cohesive and varied enough to give each page some intrigue.

Goat Magic is a lighthearted adventure story about a magical goat herder and a cursed princess. While I found the resolution a bit too simplified and neat for my taste, this graphic novel's expressive art, character arcs, and goat antics will make it a good addition to any middle grade collection.
