This is a review that slipped through the net! When I received this book from Netgalley, I was at the beginning of my learning to sew journey, so it was perfect timing - that stage where I'd learned enough to get by, but realising there was still a whole lot I didn't know. This makes a handy little reference book - if I had a physical copy, it's one that I would keep in my sewing box ready to help me out if I needed a reminder of how to do something like set in sleeves (somehow they still end up inside out for me every time if I try to do them without instruction!).
The only downfall to this book I can see, and it's really not a problem with the book itself but with more "modern" sewing, is that there are online pattern companies who now make things super simple when you're sewing. When I started out, I picked up paper patterns with more basic instructions. Nowadays, I tend to buy online PDF patterns that explain every tiny detail, with sometimes hundreds of photos and even videos to follow along. This is most certainly not the case for everyone and is not a fault of the book in any way, but it does make me think that the more sparse instructions in this book might seem a little complicated for a very first time sewist when their pattern might explain it in far more detail. But as a handy concise reference book, it's great.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book.
