I do like a crochet granny square blanket! This book provides a number of patterns for various items made out of granny squares.

I did think the order of the book was unusual (with the crochet techniques and square templates at the end, after the patterns - but they are included).

As the patterns are based on granny squares, there are plenty which look suitable for a beginner.

The instructions are easy to follow and photographs are clear

I'll definitely try out the pattern for the bohemian shopping bag, and probably the tea cosy too.

Many years ago, when I was learning to crochet, granny squares were the first pattern I learned. Simple and easy to conquer. Now the humble granny square is so popular, it even has its own yarn. The projects in this book range from beginner's squares to garments that are runway-ready. Each pattern is easy to follow and guaranteed to have you feeling like a pro with very little effort.

As a passionate crocheter, I'm always on the lookout for fresh and inspiring patterns, and Granny Squares: Over 35 Simple and Original Projects for Home and Wardrobe by Françoise Vauzeilles absolutely blew me away! The patterns are not only beautifully designed, but also clearly written and easy to follow. I recently made the stunning Geometric pillow cover, and I’m already getting compliments on it from everyone who sees it.

What I love most about this book is the perfect blend of traditional and modern styles. The color combinations are gorgeous, and the projects are so varied – from cozy home décor to chic accessories. There’s truly something for every taste and skill level. I can’t wait to tackle my next project!

This book has quickly become a staple in my crochet library. Highly recommended for fellow crocheters looking to bring a touch of vintage charm and contemporary flair to their creations. 🌸🧶

Whether you're new to crochet or have years of experience with yarn and hook, this book would be an excellent addition to your creative library! If you are just starting out with crochet or want to add t0 your skill set, there's lots to love in this book. If you've been crocheting for years (or, like me, decades), the book contains plenty of inspirational projects. In addition to the project instructions, there's a granny dictionary at the back, with instructions on how to make various squares and other shapes, presented in both text and charts. Following this, there are basic instructions on how to do each stitch, starting and finishing techniques, joining motifs together, and more. The illustrations are clear and easy to understand. Projects include garments, home dec items, practical items, accessories, and ideas for embellishing existing garments or furniture. There is also a project that adds crochet sleeves to and existing sweater. Once you start making motifs, you'll see all kinds of ways they can be used to create new items and/or to give new life to older, somewhat worn items that still have life left in them.

I've been crocheting for over 40 years and have taught classes and individuals of all ages. This is a book I would not hesitate to recommend to my students. So grab a hook, some yarn, and this book and start creating! You'll be glad you did. :-)

Granny Squares is a fun and vibrant crochet book that does exactly what it sets out to do—provide clear, colorful inspiration for both beginners and more experienced crafters. The projects aren’t groundbreaking, but they’re cheerful, accessible, and well-explained, with lovely photography throughout. I especially appreciate how it encourages you to think beyond the traditional granny square and apply it to all sorts of modern home and wardrobe items. It’s not revolutionary, but it is refreshing—and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need to get the creativity flowing.

To be honest, I have been looking for a book like this! I boldly ordered a kit online several months ago to make a large granny square blanket with no idea how to get started. This was exactly what I needed!

I was a little worried at first because the designs/templates for all of the cool stuff you can make WITH the granny squares is at the beginning of the book. After reading further, I was pleased to find the image list/instruction pages for all of the different granny square shapes you need to know to make the cool stuff from the beginning of the book. It grew on me how this book was set up. It went from big picture/project, to granny squares, to crochet techniques, abbreviations, and how to hold the hook.

I like that they added the US terms and had clear lists of what you need for each project.

Overall, this is a great book for beginners and those that want to learn how to make even more projects using granny squares. The images are beautiful & informative.

Thank you to NetGalley, Françoise Vauzeilles, & Michael O'Mara Limited for the eARC!
