I had such a great time reading The Synchrotron by Rain Hunter. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC. To me this feels like a fresh take on a zombie apocalypse story. The story focuses on Anna and a small group of scientists working at The Synchrotron when the outbreak happens and follows their efforts to survive and find a cure for the virus turning humans into spleen eating monsters.

The humor is dark, which I found refreshing and entertaining. The characters are fully developed and each brings something special to the story. We’re talking about spleen eating monsters here, so there’s some gore, but nothing over the top. The characters are scientists, so there’s definitely some science in the plot, but I think it was just the right amount.

I can see some readers not being happy with the ending. I liked the way it ended. I can’t go into explaining why without getting into spoilers, but the ending felt right to me.

Ok, anyone who likes STEM and zombies, this novel is for you!

Stuck at the French Synchrotron as a humanity turns into a bunch of spleen eaters, a group of scientists try to survive and maybe even develop a cure for this new plague on humanity.

I enjoyed the story a lot, with its mix of grittiness, dark humour, and how it showcased the characters’ drive to survive and ability to think their way around obstacles. I did hope for a little more from the ending, and at times did get a little overwhelmed with the tech/chemistry bits that were beyond my basic knowledge.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and RH Publishing for a copy.

This was a good read! I enjoyed the book. I don’t want to give anything away but this book is different and not the type of book I usually read but was surprised that I enjoyed it so much.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley.

The Synchrotron by Rain Hunter--This darkly comedic dystopian book is reminiscent tonally of John Scalzi. The book opens on a group of chemists stuck inside a lab while the end of the world seems imminent. A zombie conversion disease is spreading and there seems to be no escape. The protagonist is relatable and easily distracted; her love life, personal tiffs with the other survivors, and deepset insecurities are on full display. There are surprisingly robust contemplations on life scattered throughout this fast-paced book. I look forward to reading more from this author! I received an advance copy of this book to review, and it comes out in July. Thumbs up.
