"He was no hero. And neither was I, for that matter."

Ionheart was not the comic for me. While I enjoyed the simplistic art style in juxtaposition to the dark story, overall the narrative felt too bleak and pessimistic to me. Adding to that a weirdly non-chronological order of events on top of odd pacing, this story left me unsatisfied. I did appreciate some of the ideas in this like the concept of the parallel worlds, but I failed to get a grasp on the overarching narrative and message of this work. That however might be on me as the reader.

I would recommend Ionheart to people who think they could enjoy the art style of Adventure Time combined with a story that portrays a bleak, nihilistic worldview.

Pursued by a demon, a young knight flees across the radioactive ruins of a fantasy land. As his journey progresses his secrets begin to unfold and questions are asked.

A lovely blend of science fiction and fantasy, Ionheart immediately grabbed my attention with it's luscious colour palette and interesting synopsis. It is a fast paced graphic novel with an interesting concept. However I found myself a little disappointed with the execution.

The plot was just a little all over the place for me with the being thrown back and forth in time with little explanation or context. I had to reread a number of pages and sometimes felt like I might have accidentally skipped pages (I hadn't).

Whilst the colour palette of this graphic novel is gorgeous, the actual art style did not work for me. It didn't fit the tone of the book and as a result I struggled to fully immerse myself in the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc.

This novel follows a knight as a demon follows him. I like the colors and the art of this novel. This novel is a twist of many timelines. I really enjoyed the science aspect of this book. Some of the explanations were slightly confusing. However, it was a fine novel. The development of the young knight was interesting.

I don't read graphic novels often. Very rarely in fact, since the format tends to work budiously on me. I can see all the effort put into the making of a draphic novel, but having more images than words isn't something that works well for me. This read as confirmed it.

'Ionheart' mixes science fiction with fantasy (literaly, with robots, nuclear power and very medieval world too). It does it pretty well, with a story playing with time, told in a non linear timeline. It's interesting, with a nice differenciation in the colour palette for each world, helping the reader's comprehension. Lots of people will probably be lost by all the different identities and story line, but I thought it was pretty well done.
I can't say I was super invested in the story, but it is more a matter of format that doesn't suit me than a problem with the story, I think.

Ionheart was such a delightful read. the Artwork, on its own, is really great but the story is also a page turner. What I enjoyed the most was the placement of different time that made the story even more thrilling. Despite the time structure the pacing was smooth. Everything made sense.

The art is excellently engaging and the time skip sequences create a captive reader. It does have an awkward ending; however, much like a good wrestling match sometimes the ending doesn't matter as long as the rest told a good story.

"Ionheart" by Lukas Kummer (Out 19 August 2025 from IDW) was not what I expected at all,in the best way.

A knight is being chased by a demon in a wasteland. And then it isn't about that.

Reasons to read:
-The art style is cute and horrific in the same page
-Story went places I did not see coming
-Holy crap that's a brilliant crime
-Was riveted the whole way through

Cons:
-reader was bugged so I thought there wasn't text for 30% and I was making details up in my head. Went back and I was wrong about a lot.

Once upon a time, in another world, there was a knight who was also a wizard, and the General of the Royal Rebel Army. In this medieval-like world, technology is considered magic. The knight/wizard/General was one of the only ones that could wield this power, and then he fell asleep for thirty years. When he wakes up, it is a very different world.

The best line was: “Holy Blueberries! That sounds mighty evil!”

a satisfying, layered story with simple yet highly evocative artwork; not afraid to venture into fraught emotional and moral territory either. I liked how the different color stories made it easy to keep track of which story/timeline was the focus at any given moment.

I think this was a really great story for a graphic novel. Cool blend of sci fi and fantasy and I think the art style matched the tone really well. The art reminds me a little of ND Stevenson’s Nimona but with a gritty sci fi noir feel. Recommend checking this out and look forward to more titles from this author.

This read fast but still pretty packed for a graphic novel.

Thanks to NetGally and the author/publisher for an eArc of this title in exchange for an honest review.

Ionheart was me stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. I loved the imagery, the colors, and the art style. However, much of the plot seemed to go over my head, which was likely just me as a reader not understanding.

However, I really did enjoy getting to see the characters interact with one another, and the story was incredibly visually appealing.

Thanks Netgalley and IDW for allowing me to read this story.

At first I thought it looked interesting because we get to see this knight who apparently slept for 30 years and goes on random quests. I even liked the robot villain who honestly didn’t have a time to shine, it’s as if he gone from the picture completely! But then it was honestly getting super confusing because it seemed to me that the “knight” had more than just one identity in different situations within different time eras. It’s like one minute he’s a human trying to save the world and then he’s suddenly a robot trying to take over the world. I literally do not know who’s the main character anymore in this seriously lol 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s a ok read to waste time on but it was just all over the place….

While a quick read, I enjoyed the characters the author created and the concept/lore .
The prologue after the main story was confusing at times since it jumped around in spots.
But overall the art, concept was a unique and enjoyable read.

I was excited to be approved for this e-arc and while I am very appreciative, I found myself so lost in what was going on. It almost felt like a sequel since I found myself being thrown right in without an explanation. Throughout the novel we’re thrown back and forth in time and to different places and with no explanation. The art itself was fine, but it combined with the text had no help on when or where we were. The scenes felt shoved together and I found myself losing interest fast since I was so lost as to what was happening and what I was supposed to perceive in each part of the story.

Ionheart was a super quick read and I really loved the concept behind it. However, the art style just wasn't for me. The color scheme was gorgeous though.

3/5 Stars
Graphic novels are always quick reads for me that I love as little pallet cleansers during books. That being said I was excited to see I was approved for this one. Ironheart has an intriguing premise with its eerie blend of fantasy, science fiction, and time-bending twists. The concept of a knight fleeing through radioactive fairy-tale ruins while facing off against a demon was unique and held my attention. However, the art style just didn’t work for me. It felt more distracting than immersive, which made it harder to connect with the story. That said, the storytelling had potential, and was still enjoyable but it overall could have been better.
