The story broke my heart. I never imagined the ending would be that way. I absolutely loved it, but it broke my heart. The situations were so real and so authentic that you wonder if everything that was told actually happened in real life. I will definitely read it again.

Good lord, this book is an emotional roller coaster ride. This novella follows Daisy and Logan and we get to experience their yearning, trauma, sadness, hopelessness and intermittent moments of happiness together. I really loved their relationship even though they always seem to be ships passing in the night. The end of this book is a definite tear jerker so bring your tissues. Also ignore me over here in the corner crying and hugging my pillow.
Be prepared to finish this book in one sitting because you will not be able to put it down. This is my first read from this author and I can say that it definitely won't be my last.

Wow. The Last One completely wrecked me - in the quietest, most delicate way possible. It’s short, but don’t let that fool you. This story carries weight.
Daisy and Logan feel so real. The kind of “what if” love that lives between the lines. The timing is always off, the words never quite said, and you’re just watching it all unfold with that sinking feeling in your chest because you know how it ends… and yet you hope anyway.
It’s tender, it’s raw, and it doesn’t shy away from the messy stuff - grief, longing, duty, motherhood, mental health. H. Pearce somehow captured all of that in just over 200 pages, and I devoured it in one sitting with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.
This isn’t a happily-ever-after kind of love story… it’s the kind that lingers. The kind that makes you stare at the ceiling after finishing and just feel for a bit.
If you’ve ever had someone who felt like home but never really got to be yours… this one will break you. And you’ll thank it for doing so.

This book destroyed me. I felt so sick. So freaking sick I threw up twice. My heart hurt so bad. I think I've never felt so heartbroken as I was now after finishing this book. I wanted to scream and cry so hard but it was 2 AM now. My chest hurt from the sadness this book brought me. If it was possible, I wanted to dive into the book and made Logan and Daisy never met. This story was so unfair for both of them and everyone in this book. My throat was so tight now because the pressure I had to try not to cry again.
How could this book made me so mad, sad, and miserable all at once? I hate this book so much I need to give it 5 stars because I am a masochist.
Thank you to H. Pearce, Victoria Editing, and NetGalley for the ARC.

a book so compelling and so full of feeling. i was totally taken in by this pairs story and i wanted to know all of it and wanted to keep reading all of it until i knew how it would turn out. i was holding out hope and also not wanting to in case it didnt have a hopeful ending. thats how i know i enjoyed this book, how utterly involved and needing a right ending i was!
we come to this book and our female main character Daisy. shes a journalist and through work she meets Logan who is dedicated himself and his work to his scientist backround and mens mental health. they start with an interview but there is no way this isnt something so much more between the pair.
the writing just flowed from then. you got so much depth for the length of the book.
i loved how relatable i found the pair and often smiled with the familiarity of their thoughts.
over time their interactions became something more. and i began to wonder where this was going. was i hopeful, or something else?
and there is things that occur that made my feeling towards Daisy even more prominent. she was such an amazing woman to follow. the things she had to take on, the decisions she had to make made her a very brilliant young lady indeed. knowing what she had to do i almost didn't want to continue to read. her duty was so powerful but so painful at the same time. and yet it was also kind of wonderful to see something like that.
oh i dont know i am all a tither after this one. in all the best ways when you have read a book that makes you feel like this one did.
you know how much a books effects you when you want a forever epilogue to make sure or find the characters are ok!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishing co-op for access to this ARC. My views are my own.
So I cried when I watched the movie and series, ' One Day'. I hadn't read the book but this Novella seems like it fits into a similar themes. Two people who seem destined to be together but have numerous missed connections over the years but are becer together long enough to form a real bond.
Daisy meets Logan when she's interviewing him for a magazine. He's about a decade older, she's 26. They have a dparl between them and keep meeting but then their lives go I. Separate directions. They do connect mostly by email but sometimes its a year or more in between. They don't actually spend more time together then a lunch date. Both get married and both have issues in their marriage. For Logan its that he's in live with Daisy and cant connect with his wife, leading in a divorce.
For Daisy her husband and father of her child is severely injured in Afghanistan while in duty suffering from a devastating head injury that takes his memories and leads her to switch from wife to nurse/ caregiver.
They still find a way to accidentally meet again even if it's only an intertwining of souls.
I was fascinated by the concept of the story and was kept on my toes the whole time.. I felt like the talk about reincarnation was interesting and I mostly understood the ending ( although not sure I 100 wasnt reading more into it then what it was).
I didn't feel a real connection between the main characters though for 60 percent of the book. Their time together and conversations were too short and I didn't see them as more then emotionally supportive friends for the majority of the book.

Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review this ARC via net galley.

The Last One by H. Pearce is a quiet, beautifully written exploration of love, timing, and the soul-deep recognition that sometimes, the one has been beside you all along—even if you never really got to call them yours.
This is not your typical love story. There’s no sweeping romance or grand declarations immediately—instead, it's a slow, aching realisation of connection built over time, across glances, shared messages to one another, and missed chances. The writing is intimate and understated, and it perfectly captures that sense of yearning we all carry: the hope that someone out there is meant for us.
📌 [End Spoilers]
This story lingers with you. It asks what it means to love someone completely, without allowimg yourself the chance at a relationship with them and even if you never get the fairytale ending. Which sadly for these beautiful characters, they don't. For readers who enjoy emotional depth, bittersweet truths, and stories that quietly stay with you, The Last One is a standout. One of the most affecting reads I’ve picked up this year.
I cannot wait to read more from this author

Absolutely loved this! It’s a beautiful short story about missed opportunities and the importance of speaking your truth and living life without regrets. Our characters are separated, but fate keeps bringing them together at inopportune times. It touches on the power of motherhood and duty, men’s mental health, and how one life changing event can reshape your entire perspective.

Thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing for this ARC of this novel that publishes on June 13, 2025.
The Last One by H. Pearce follows the story of Daisy Jenkins, a journalist who, in the course of her work, crosses paths with Logan Blake, a prestigious neuroscientist dedicated to researching men's mental health. What begins as an interview soon becomes something much more significant in her life.
Although this story is short in length, you can perceive the depth of its characters, and I must say it was unexpectedly introspective in the best possible way. Additionally, I loved the writing style.
It was very easy to get hooked and not want to stop reading. I often found myself deeply connected to Daisy and Logan's thoughts. By the way, they are both very similar and very stubborn—so much so that they remind me of myself.
The spark that began to emerge from their encounters was incredibly perceptible to me as a reader, but over time, it became something very different for both of them.
Even so, I loved watching them interact and how they brought out so many aspects of each other's personalities.
However, it soon turned into many missed opportunities, into something "unspoken but undeniable." Each of them made decisions so far removed from who they were that the story suddenly took a completely different direction.
Now I had to see them in a more independent light. On one hand, it hurt to see how the situation affected Logan, and on the other, I began to recognize Daisy's new reality and the difficult position she now had to take charge of.
Daisy found herself stuck between decisions and truths that her heart may have already resolved, but her mind had not. I certainly couldn't imagine myself in a situation like that, or whether I could do anything differently. Daisy is a very strong woman for that reason.
When the words were finally spoken, it ended up being a very hard blow that somehow also turned out to be something very meaningful.

A story of missed chances. Written from the POV of neurologist Logan and journalist Daisy who meet when she is writing a story on Logan. The pair continue to meet coincidentally before starting to email each other.
I didn't love the chemistry between the pair and at times was frustrated with their choices, given at times during their lives the only people holding themselves back from each other was themselves.
Enjoyed the multiple POVs and Daisy's storyline I found particularly interesting especially towards the end of the book.

On the surface it looks like a story of missed opportunities, a man and woman attracted to each other but circumstances never being right for a relationship to develop. But it' s far more than that. Daisy marries a man somewhat impulsively and finds out he has sustained devastating injuries in an IED attack. The story becomes one of duty: a woman's need to pick up the pieces, no matter the cost to her. From the initial premise of a superficial meet cute that never goes anywhere,, The Last One delivers a powerful punch and stayed with me.

Thank you for allowing me to reach such a beautiful story. It’s a heartfelt story about two people whose seemingly ill-timed, recurring encounters turned out to be exactly what they needed at that point in their lives. I could not put this book down. I absolutely love the writing style. I loved everything about this book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Wow what an absolute tearjerker of a ride. Thought I would start this short story with a cuppa this morning. Literally could not put it down and read it within an hour and half.
A story about soulmates that come together with missed chances and unspoken feelings.
Top stars for me, absolutely loved the style of writing and I’m checking out what else this author has written.

What a beautiful story! Daisy and Logan really captivated me from the very beginning and I was so eager to find out exactly how their story would play out from their first meeting on and I was not disappointed. This book kept me turning the pages on the edge of my seat late into the night. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a beautiful love story different from its predecessors that really makes you believe true love exists:
