This book was so good from beginning to end. I loved how it was written. The way the author writes makes you want to keep on reading and keep guessing what might happen. You think you know where the plot is going and then there's a twist.
Would 100% recommend everyone reading this book, I'm off to find more books written by this author.

Dev and Merri cannot believe their luck after years of just getting by. But an easy road ahead they didn’t have.

The book is suspenseful right from the off when you can detect a secret or two lurking and something that clearly plagues Merri’s mind.

Twists and turns abound, you not only get an insight into a fairly ordinary life turned extraordinary but also how people’s experiences stick with them and shape their lives and future experiences.

Thrilling, saddening and reflective in equal measure, this book was very hard to put down once I got going with it and whilst a slower start initially led me into wondering where things were going, I found that I simply could not put it down after a while.

Very much recommended!

Thanks for the early review copy.

I did enjoy the storyline but also found it very drawn out and bit slow in places.

The characters were well written.

The Lucky Winners was addictive and suspenseful, I was hooked right from the start. I loved how fast paced it was and how I just kept wanting to keep reading. I always find those competitions so win massive houses feel like something is off with them and so I really liked the story and felt it worked really well

Twisty, bingeable, and exactly what you would expect from K.L Slater.

This hooked me straight away. A family party in a big, beautiful house, what could go wrong? Well, absolutely everything. . I loved how the tension slowly built up as secrets unraveled and everyone’s perfectly polished exterior started to crack. You never quite know who to trust (classic Slater style), and just when I thought I had things figured out, she threw in another twist.

Some of the characters were seriously frustrating, but in the way that made the story more addictive. Everyone’s hiding something, and I enjoyed trying to piece it all together. It did feel a little rushed at the end, but I still closed the book satisfied.

If you like your thrillers fast-paced and full of drama, this one’s a solid pick. Not her darkest or most complex, but definitely entertaining and a perfect weekend read.

We’ve all seen the adverts - those incredible houses - glass boxes in amazing locations. All yours for the price of a raffle ticket. But have you ever known someone who has won? And would that win be the best day of your life.. or could it be the worst - and the start of nightmare instead of a dream?

Merri and Dev are on their knees financially and this win seems to be the answer to their prayers - but someone knows something and Merri has a big secret to hide.

Before long the nightmare comes horrifyingly real - but who’s the real bad guy here, and can Merri keep it all together, or is her new life about to slip through her fingers?

A good book but not excellent. I felt it lacked a bit of suspense and didn’t leave much to the imagination. I didn’t feel the characters were particularly likeable either. Not the best I’ve read by this author

Down on their luck and struggling to pay the rent, Dev buys his wife, Merri, a ticket for a prize draw to win a luxury house in the Lake District. Merri is a glass half-empty sort of person because of something terrible that happened years ago. She's cross with Dev, a glass half-full kind of person, for spending £20 on the ticket. They end up winning first prize and move to this grand show home overlooking Lake Windemere. But Merri can't shake off the ghosts of her past and locals seem to be lining up against them.
This is a light thriller, with a dual timeline to help make sense of Merri's seeming paranoia. It's tautly written, would work well as TV drama but wasn't as suspenseful or thrilling as I'd hoped, although the 'winning a luxury house' aspect was very topical.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for an advance review copy of this novel.

Not as thrilling as I had hoped it was going to be.

Merri and Dev have been married for 3 years. They are living in a rented house and struggling to make ends meet. Dev has a job he doesn't like and the couple have so many bills they have been cancelling subscriptions and agreed to only buy cards for their anniversary. Merri is furious when she opens her card to find that Dev has spent £20 on a ticket to win a house. Things couldn't get any worse - until their car breaks down too. However, fate is about to smile on them as they win the house and £250k in tax free cash. Dev is delighted and promptly quits his job, Merri is more cautious and has concerns about the publicity around the win.

Upon taking up residence in the beautiful house that they won in the Lake District they find that a dew strange things are happening - first there is the brick through the window, then the graffiti and damage to the glass and the mystery Facebook page hacking. Dev brushes it all off, but Merri is pretty sure it is someone that they know...and that is before she spots the watcher in the trees. Now her former friend, Paige, has stopped speaking to her and Merri can feel the pressure to tell all about her past mounting...

This was not as twisty as I hoped it would be. It is very much a slow burn type story with their being no real jump scares or major twists - I think the only twist is who is responsible for what is going on, and even that was fairly well telegraphed in advance. The characters feel a bit thinly sketched , even Merri who is the main focus of the story. Most of the other characters feel a bit stereotypical and there are things that have been pressed into being cliffhangers when they really aren't. I was not a fan of having almost every chapter end on a cliffhanger - many of which were contrived into being cliffhangers to try and convince us we were reading a thriller.

Fans of K.L Slater will probably love this...but for me it was just not thrilling enough.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

The Lucky Winners is a slow-burning psychological thriller that takes a seemingly lucky break and twists it into something much darker. Merri and Dev winning their dream home in the Lake District sounds like the ultimate fairytale, but it quickly becomes clear that something is very off.

The pacing takes a little while to ramp up, but there are plenty of small hints and unsettling moments layered throughout that keep you intrigued. The mystery unfolds gradually (maybe a little too gradually for me personally) but the reveal is satisfying.

What I really enjoyed were the characters: Merri and Dev feel like regular, relatable people. Their reactions and relationship dynamics grounded the story, even when the tension started to rise.

If you like psychological thrillers with a slow build and an undercurrent of unease, this one is for you!

I have only read one other book by this established British author, of which I loved & vowed it wouldn't be my last, & The Lucky Winners hasn't disappointed either!

It's short snappy chapters, full of suspense, has the reader racing through it. The author has used two timelines & three POV's which makes the narrative powerful, easing out the dark disturbing past of the characters.

A must read for any fan of psychological suspense thrillers.

Thank you to Net Galley for my ARC in return for an honest review.

Wow! K. L. Slater does it again! Another brilliant read that I couldn’t put down! I devoured this pretty much in one night. It’s the ‘just one more chapter’ type of book and before you know it it’s after midnight and you just have to finish the book.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the concept - I’ve often thought about winning one of those competitions where the prize is a huge house in the Lake District and a thriller centred around that drew me right in. I loved the back and forth to the past and now those stories weaved together. Definitely had twists and turns I wasn’t expecting and didn’t want to put it down. Would recommend to thriller fans!

This book surprised me.

Something made me want to read it, but I wasn’t sure what. I thought it may be a bit shallow, and I’m glad to have been proven wrong.

It was a much more in depth story than I was expecting from the description. The main character was intriguing and I connected with her from the beginning.

The story took a little while to ramp up into the full blown mystery it became, with lots of hints and suspicions being slowly revealed.

It was well written, a nice pace, and the ending was brilliant. Satisfying with all the loose ends neatly tied up.

All in all a most enjoyable read and I would like to read more by this author.

A gripping thriller with realistic characters and a narrative that builds suspense towards a surprising reveal.

The author's skill was clearly shown in how they managed to make a huge open plan house feel so claustrophobic to the reader.

Great twists in the narrative too that felt realistic.

The world building was excellent and I can see this as a television drama. It would have huge general appeal.

Highly recommended for thriller fans.

We’ve all seen those glossy TV ads promising a dream home in paradise – but what if winning turned out to be a nightmare?

When Merri and Dev win a stunning Lake District mansion in a national draw, it feels too good to be true. For Dev, it's a fresh start. But for Merri, it stirs up memories she’s spent years trying to outrun. Then strange things start happening… and a body turns up in the lake.

This is a gripping, easy-to-follow thriller with well-drawn characters and just the right amount of suspense. K.L. Slater masterfully builds tension, and once things start to unravel, it’s genuinely hard to put down.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.

K.L. Slater delivers another masterclass in psychological suspense with The Lucky Winners, a taut and twisty tale that hooks from the first page. When Merri and Dev win their dream home in the idyllic Lake District, it feels like fate has finally smiled on them. But beneath the surface of this seemingly perfect prize lies a tangled web of secrets and buried fears.

Merri’s discomfort is palpable—Slater writes her paranoia with such nuance that you start to second-guess the shadows yourself. The creeping dread builds beautifully, especially after a body is found in the nearby lake, and suddenly their dream home begins to feel like a carefully laid trap.

The novel is rich in atmosphere, with the remote location adding a haunting backdrop to the unravelling drama. Slater keeps the tension razor-sharp, unspooling twists that feel both shocking and earned. And as always, she proves adept at exploring how the past never truly stays hidden.

This is an unsettling, compelling read from an author at the top of her game. Highly recommended for fans of domestic thrillers with a dark, emotional edge.
