This picture book series is quite fun to read and has such a lovely back story since they are grounded in experiences that the author or her daughter had. The artwork is well done with tons of detail. I do find that the story was a bit choppy especially at the start, but that may just be because I'm not the target audience. And I did question the fact that a little girl was able to do all this without her parents being aware especially at night. There are some good lessons in the book, although the focus was really on the two main characters working together again and overcoming obstacles to protect the farm. So it was less about learning than about accomplishing.

While part of a series, there is no need to have read the first book. It will help to position the relationship between Rosie and Oakley more since this book starts with them as friends and co-defenders of the farm. But that isn't necessary to understand the friendship between these characters and their desire for adventures.

As with the first book, I would recommend it as a read aloud or bedtime book. And definitely a great gift.

My niece begged me to request this book as soon as she saw the cover and I read the description to her. It was a great pre-bedtime story with adventures of different animals encountered in the wilderness. A fun story for all ages with gorgeous illustrations to bring the characters to life!
