In mid 1600s, Cornwall, Kensa and her half-sister, Elowen, come across a sea monster (the Morgawr) dying on Towan Beach and when local Wise Woman, Isolde, asks who found the creature, Kensa lies & Elowen doesn’t contradict her. Isolde gives Kensa a bone-handled knife and tasks her with cutting out the creature’s tongue. But the inside of its mouth is slippery, Kensa drops the knife and the tidal swell gradually reaches up to recover its own. Isolde then promises Kensa that if she wishes to become a wise woman, she will instruct her, but not until the knife is returned to Isolde’s safekeeping. The promise is repeated over 4 years, until the day Kensa finds the knife.
Kensa moves into Isolde’s tumbledown cottage to begin her training, but it doesn’t always go as planned. There are things Isolde remains secretive about and more blatantly, things she will not teach Kensa, even though she (Kensa) masters more than she realises. Then her sister Elowen sickens with something clearly fatal, and unwilling to lose her, Kensa asks Isolde for the ultimate sacrifice. But nothing comes without consequence.
An immersive and compelling supernatural historical fantasy using fictional characters in a real-life setting. Definitely recommended for gothic story lovers and for anyone with a love of Cornwall!.

Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC of The Salt Bind. A story right up my street, full of mythology, witches and gods. Set in Cornwall, this book brings to life the old ways and the myths that shape the people. At its heart is a story of sisterhood and finding your place. Beautifully written, I will look out for more by this author.

4+ ⭐

I could have read and read and read some more about these sisters.
Their lives, their problems their bond.
On top of that, the other storyline had me on the edge of my seat sometimes.
Just excellent stuff.
