It’s clear from the very first chapter that the author possesses a deep, well-researched understanding of the subject—and an undeniable passion for sharing it. The level of detail and the breadth of information presented are impressive, and for readers looking to seriously dive into the topic, this book offers a wealth of insight.

That said, the material is quite dense and at times pedantic, reading much more like a tediously detailed textbook (complete with every list of species names possible!) despite it being marketed as a general science book geared towards the mainstream reader. This makes it a challenging read for those hoping for a more accessible or narrative-driven approach.

In short, while the book is a valuable resource for dedicated learners or professionals in the field, casual readers may find it difficult to get through without a strong prior interest or background. A passion project, certainly—but not light reading.

Thank you to NetGalley and Columbia University press for the ARC. My opinions are my own.

I didn't know there was this much to learn about ammonites, but I am so happy I got to learn more.

In this book we explore everything ammonites:
- Cultural significance
- Formation of the fossils
- How the ammonites lived when they were alive
- Different species of ammonites
- Where you can find fossils today
- A plethora of pictures and illustrations

This really is THE ammonite book for everyone interested. I leave this book now with a greater appreciation for these fascinating remnants of a simpler world. Highly recommend this to fossil and ammonite enthusiasts, this will hit the spot for all of you.

Giving this 4 stars, wonderful read. Learned so much

Plaudits to Jodi Summers for this handsome, educational, readable, and delightful book. I am not a “fossil fanatic” but was attracted by the descriptive copy for We Dig Ammonites and the attractive cover. I was rewarded by a lavishly well illustrated book, which informed me in an entertaining and educational way about the vast array of ammonite species and fossils, ammonite fossils, species biology, the history of their study, and about searching for and collecting ammonites around the world. The work of a true enthusiast, We Dig Ammonites inspires enthusiasm in its own right. Highly recommended.
