Such a perfect one-shot BL! The story was well-paced and both of the main characters were distinct and compelling. The ending was great and I love how there is potential for it to be continued--which I hope it eventually is!

Such a wonderful read!

I love the art style, storyline, and the information at the end by the translator.

The characters are so cute! Chiba is a driving instructor, and Yaotome is a <spoiler>manga artist. Yaotome immediately reminded me of Nozaki from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun (a super adorable manga as well). Nozaki in that book also draws inspiration for his character from his real life friend, and I was instantly filled with happy memories and feelings! </spoiler>

The storyline is extremely quick moving, it is a one-shot after all. And still made me feel a plethora of feelings. I only wish it could have been longer!

Been a while since I read a BL and completely loved this.

P.S. I am extremely thankful to have received this book as an advanced e-book for an honest review.

Thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to review this ARC!

Kingyobachi Deme is an artist I first got to read on Manga Planet/Futekiya’s library.. They have one BL (Lovin’ Your Face) and one slice-of-life with queer themes (Madoka’s Secret) available there and I remember both series fondly, and they were memorable enough for me to take noe of the creator’s name.

My Instructor Won’t Yield, however, truly surpassed my expectations! Not only both of the characters are so lovable that if someone were to hurt them, you would immediately thro hands, it’s commandable how Deme crafts a touching and emotionally moving story out of a seemingly simplistic plot structure that will be familiar to a seasoned BL reader.

The beauty of the art style was, again, something I expected reading the creator’s previous series but it’s lovely to see how Deme progressed and their character designs and panelling have become more refined! Definitely a sight for the sore eyes.

Highly highly highly recommended, do not miss this one!!

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!

This is more of a 4.5 star than a 4 star. This was a cute single-volume boys love manga about a driving class taker and his instructor, with lovely art and a sweet story. It's very low heat, but the narrative makes up for it in lovely ways. Both leads are lovely and the cast in general is quite fun. If you're looking for more light-hearted/fluffy BL, this is definitely the thing.

This was a cute little story! It’s such a bizarre plot to have a romance featured at a driving school but it was surprisingly enjoyable. I really loved the progression of their relationship and how they had to work to get on the same page. Even that little bit of miscommunication on both their end just added to the fun. The art was GORGEOUS too, wow! I could have done with one more chapter, but I’m ok for the most part with how short it was.

My Instructor Won't Yield is just the kind of cute yearning long-time-crush BL I needed today! Here we have handsome Chiba who always gets hit on by the girls, and super nervous man who comes to the school to take driving classes so he can get his license - so that he can take his cat to the hospital if it needs! Wow wholesome.

I actually forgot about the cat until I started writing this review, Kingyobachi-san give us more cat!! Anyway, this cute mutual crush situation, nobody being like "wait I think I like boys?" which is so common it's refreshing when they are both thirty years old and know they're gay , we've got a Nozaki-kun situation with a mangaka who may have based a character on someone he knows... it's cute, I liked it.

Thank you to Kodansha and NetGalley for the eARC for review!

This is a very cute and sweet BL that can feel a little too fast-paced towards the end but overall leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling in your heart. I can't wait to read the next volume.
Our protagonists are two grown men who meet during driving lessons and from there their story will begin to develop. The drawing isn't super detailed, but it's cute and perfect for their story.
If you are looking for a quick bl manga to read without big dramas between the characters, this is your story.

This is a cute one-shot BL manga.

I have to admit, not being familiar with Japanese driving schools, I was confused at first. The explanation in the back really helped with that.

I'm still getting used to the Japanese way of storytelling, and the cultural differences in for instance interactions. So for me, the pacing was a bit too fast, and it didn't really make sense to me how fast they fell for each other (especially the instructor, since the student has had a crush on him for years). That being said, I did enjoy it.

The art style was right up my alley, and I loved the little jokes and references to other manga and geek culture.

I rate this 3,5 stars.

A fun and moving one-shot BL romance that’ll have you hugging the turns! An elite driving instructor who's sworn off love and a handsome client with a secret get behind the wheel. But will they go the distance?

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for allowing me to read this BL comic/graphic/manga. It is so cute and I would love to continue to read this book. I hope there a second book for this. I giving this a 4.5 stars. It just make me smile while reading.

An absolutely adorable one shot BL that was both funny and heartwarming. Two genuine male leads and where the miscommunication trope is over and done, not dragged out for the sake of drama (personal 10/10).

This is a cute and over-the-top manga about a driving instructor and his student. The student has a reason for choosing Chiba as his instructor, making for an interesting read with a few "reveals." I'm not sure if this is just a standalone or will be a series, but as is, it makes for a complete story.

This is very over the top in the confessions and reactions. If you hate that ridiculousness in anime or manga, then I'd skip this. I personally found it funny and endearing here. I found myself rooting for them! This does not have any spice, just brief kissing.

I'd recommend this if you're looking for a cute, romance-first, not spicy / explicit MM romance.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy for review!

While this manga did have its cute moments the story felt very disjointed to me. It felt like the creator had all these ideas of things they wanted to implement into a manga and threw them all together. The Hokkaido trip felt out of nowhere and like an excuse to bring the characters together and have cute scenes without it making any sense for them to go. I also felt like the romance wasn't built up enough to pay off when they got together. I was also a little disappointed that there wasn't more moments between them during driving lessons and that the focus was taken away from that in the second half. I did like learning about the driving licensing system in Japan and how it differs from my own system. As someone who has recently undergone lessons I was expecting to feel camaraderie with Yaotome and his journey with driving but I didn't get that. The art was very nice and it has such a strong start and lots of potential.

My Instructor Won't Yield is BL centering around a driving school. This got me interested as it's something refreshing! Chiba is a driving instructor and everybody likes him, especially the women. He's a nice guy and a good teacher too. He doesn't want anything romantic with his pupils, but soon a man called Yaotome changes that. Yaotome has hard time trying to be normal around Chiba and slowly these two get to know one another. There is realistic homosexual attraction and there's no sex, well, we don't get to see it at least. Both main characters are adults and very normal too, so the manga is a bit boring. The driving instruction isn't enough to be a plot, since it's slightly superimposed and not depicted enough to be even credible. There's not enough content to make the crushing believable.

The art looks nice and cute and all in all this is heartwarming, but lacks content and an idea. In a way the manga is too easy and there's not that much drama either. This will work for some, but I've read enough BL to want moar. Still, a nice manga altogether.

This was cute, but definitely quick and short! I wished we got more development from the two of them but I still enjoyed reading it.

I received a copy of the book from NetGalley and Kodansha Comics.

This is such a cute slice of life manga!

Following Chiba a driving instructor and Yaotome his student. Both are in their 30s so they form a bit of a natural friendship. While Chiba has sworn off love it seems Yaotome is interested in more. Can Chiba be worn down?

I really loved the art style and how easily this story flowed. It wrapped up really nicely as well for being a one shot!

My Instructor Won't Yield is such a fun and refreshing manga. In this story, we follow Mr Yaotome, a man in his 30s hoping to acquire his driver's license, and Mr Chiba, his driving instructor. This manga delves into the driving school culture in Japan, with little anecdotes of Japanese culture placed throughout the book that are interesting and insightful. And the banter between the main characters is both cute and awkward in the most endearing ways. In some moments, you want to laugh out loud, while other parts make you feel shy (some might say even blush a little). Overall, the plot unfolds well, keeping you hooked. The illustrations are outstanding, and the writing flows smoothly, avoiding choppy sections that would otherwise break the immersion in the story, keeping you nestled into the universe Deme has created for these characters.

Manga artist Deme Kingyobachi has more than a few manga under her belt. And her most recent, 2023’s My Instructor Won’t Yield, is getting an English-language release next month. Released in Japan as Chiba Kyokan wa Nabikanai (“Instructor Chiba Isn’t Flattered”), the one-shot BL story follows the awkward romance between a new driver and his instructor. But what happens when Chiba learns his student’s big secret?

This new release packs a lot of story into a single volume. And if you’re looking for a new BL manga in an unconventional setting, this just might be the title for you!

The Allure of a Driving Instructor

My Instructor Won’t Yield, at least in its first pages, hinges on a single concept: it’s easy to crush on a driving instructor. They are, after all, a source of comfort and stability during a very difficult process. Their job is to encourage you and help you feel confident. So there’s an allure there… according to this manga, at least. And according to Yaotome, Chiba’s attractive but awkward new mentee.

The most awkward part is that Yaotome calls Chiba by a seemingly random name as soon as they meet. The reason for this eventually becomes clear. But it definitely causes more problems before it solves any.

A Shoujo Manga Romance

One half of the main couple of My Instructor Won’t Yield is, obviously, a driving instructor. But Yaotome is a big manga fan and works from home. Put the pieces together, and soon it becomes clear that Yaotome is a well-known shoujo manga artist! That’s all well and good, until Chiba starts catching feelings for Yaotome and discovers that one of their cute interactions has become inspiration for a recent page.

Considering Chiba’s own past troubles with love, he’s understandably a bit untrusting. Does Yaotome really care for Chiba, or is he just mining their blossoming relationship for inspiration? The answer is a bit more complicated than even Chiba bargained for.

A Certified Happily-Ever-After

Not to give too much away, but rest assured My Instructor Won’t Yield actually does have a positive outcome. The half-life of a misunderstanding in fiction is relatively short, and it can get awkward when those misunderstandings are artificially drawn out. Fortunately, both parties get to speak their truth: Chiba about his past relationship, Yaotome about his surprisingly long-standing crush. The volume ends, as all good BL one-shots do, with an adorable domestic epilogue.

Even in its short chapter count, this manga covers a lot: how we personify people we don’t truly know, the fear of not being taken seriously in love, and the boundaries that need discussing. “Student falls for driving instructor” may sound like a very one-note plot, but it’s so much more. This is a great read for fans who prefer their BL less explicit on the page and more focused on the road to an eventual relationship.

MY INSTRUCTOR WON'T YIELD is soooooooooo cute! Chiba is a driving instructor and a good one at that - he makes sure that his students feel comfortable and safe but makes sure to draw a line if they ever get too close. Enter Yaotome, who is already thirty but doesn't have a license yet desperately needs one to properly care for his cat. As they meet more often, both inside and outside of driving lessons, the two men discover what it means to open up to someone new. I genuinely loved this manga, it had me kicking my feet and giggling. Chiba and Yaotome had such adorable chemistry with each other and I adored how much their lives intertwined past the driving lessons. Cute characters, a sweet romance, and sweet side characters that make you smile, you will want to pick this one up!

It's a funny, tender, and perfect one-shot read!

* The characters *
I was surprised at first because I was apprehensive about certain things, but not at all! Our two characters are extremely adorable and well developed for a one-shot, which is nice, as we don't gloss over their past too quickly.
We have a “shojo prince” and a shojo prince haha, yes, you'll see why there's a difference in this one-shot. In short, I liked them.

* The romance *
Obviously, there are some shortcuts, but it's so adorable and funny. You have a great time reading it, and the initial context is pretty well done. Their relationship also evolves logically without making us too uncomfortable.

* Conclusion *
In short, it's a great little manga that I loved reading!

Thank you, Netgalley, for allowing me to discover this title.

This was such a sweet story. Chiba and Yatome are relatable, funny, dorky, and so so so re-readable! Their story was so cute that I wish there was another 200 pages of them to enjoy! Highly recommend to anyone that likes a standalone happy ending :)
