My Instructor Won’t Yield is a cute, one-shot BL manga. Chiba is a handsome driving instructor whose charming work persona combined with his good looks often make the female students harbor a crush on him at the driving school where he works. So, to avoid any misunderstandings, he tries to limit the amount of female students he helps. Enter Yaotome, an always sharply dressed male student. He seems cool from a distance, but he’s a mess behind the wheel and tends to behave strangely when paired with Chiba as his instructor. Soon enough, Chiba will find out Yaotome has a reason for his strange behavior. Maybe, in the long run, Chiba can calm his inner turmoil enough to teach him how to maneuver both the streets and the road of life.

I had a lot of fun reading this manga. The art is lovely and straight forward, the characters are shy and sweet, and it’s a really quick read. As a relatively new reader of manga, sometimes it could be a little confusing who was speaking. The speech bubbles are often next the person who isn’t speaking with little lines pointing to the one who is, but after a while you get the hang of figuring it out. There were also a lot of references to things I knew nothing about, but they’re all explained through glossary-type pages at the back of the book. I wasn’t sure if there’d be spice because a lot of BL manga has it, but this one alludes to physical intimacy without showing it on the page, which is a plus for me.

My Instructor Won’t Yield was a cute, cozy story with minimal angst and a few chuckles along the way. I recommend it if you like BL manga without the spice.

This was a cute one-shot story that I actually wish had the freedom of more volumes to develop the characters. The art style is simple and clean, but the detail given to the cars is top-notch. And I honestly couldn't care about the cars (haha). The relationship dynamic was flirty and innocent, but had an undercurrent of tension - great for a reader who wants a lighthearted romance filled with hope and second chances. Recommended for your average Seinen/Josei readers.

A chill and sweet story that leans more on comical and fluff plot line. There’re layers to the story despite the laidback tone to it, the backstory of why Chiba hates instructor-student’s relationship and Yaotome’s growth were not exactly impactful, but memorable enough for one to have an enjoyable read. Although the romance does feel a bit rushed, the overall buildup was executed well and was wrapped cutely with a hint of spice lol (I’m a sucker for neck’s kissing bahahaha).

And this is also my first time to come across the translation notes and that’s definitely a fresh and interesting experience !

A cute and sweet romance. I am new to this format and found it easier to read as I progressed. Fans of manga should enjoy. Drawings are fun and it is a lightveasy reaf. Fluffy and sweet, very recommendable.

This was such a cute webtoon. The art style is very pleasing and both the ML's are adorable.

The story starts with our charming main lead, a kind and handsome instructor at a driving school. (Side note: I had no idea Japan had so many driving tests! In my country, we only have two—written and practical.)

So back to the story, since the ML is so sweet and good looking most girls can't help but want him as an instructor. One day a cool handsome man in a suit shows up who give off princely vibes. He's paired with the ML but when the prince guy meets him, he calls him by another name: Maki san...for some reason and also he is so scared of driving, his princely facade melts of in seconds haha. They both form a friendly bond but turns out the other guy is a manga artist and the main character in his comic- Maki, looks exactly like the ML.

But things take a turn when the ML, still carrying baggage from a past relationship, discovers their interactions are being used for manga content. Misunderstandings arise especially after the ML's Ex returns. But everything turns out well in the end!

This was a sweet comic! I felt like I was eating melted chocolate. The ending was satisfying and their pairing couldn't be more right. Give this a read if you are a fan of short, sweet romance.

A one-shot manga, with a gentle, caring romance.
A BL without excessive sex scenes between a mangaka and a driving instructor.

They're too cute when they're shy, and I loved the “prince from a shōjo manga” lines.

I loved the idea of getting his license so he could transport his cat - it's way too adorable. Frankly, I wish I'd had such a nice instructor during my driving lessons!

The drawings are pleasant, the atmosphere is light, and you have a good time without it being a memorable read. It's the perfect way to unwind, without any fuss.

My instructor won’t yield by Deme Kingyobachi

Have you ever taken a driving test or classes? If yes, then this book might be of interest to you.

Here, we meet Mr. Chiba, a thirty-year-old polite, diligent, yet detached driving instructor at a driving school. He’s sworn off love, but this promise, sadly, doesn’t last long when Mr. Yaotome becomes his next student. Shy and nervous, but excited, Mr. Yaotome wants to overcome his nerves and learn to drive so that he can take his lovely cat to the vet more quickly and comfortably. Outwardly, he is the definition of composed and serious due to his formal attire, but with Mr. Chiba, the composure and seriousness abandon him. An accidental after-hours meeting reveals an unexpected side of Yaotome to Chiba, and what follows is an uplifting and heart-warming story which you will have to read for yourself to feel good.

Honestly, I was kind of scared that I wouldn’t like this book due to a particular part of the plot at the beginning, but luckily, I was proven wrong. I ended up finishing this manga in one sitting and devoured it. I was smiling almost the whole time, and my cheeks were hurting by the time I was done reading. This isn’t a heavily plot- or character-driven book, but it is the kind that gives you hope and a little energy to get through the day, which, for me, is totally worth it.

This book has a good balance of light-heartedness without being too saccharine or unrealistic. The overall story had good pacing, but I did feel that the ending could’ve been fleshed out more and that we got to see more of the main characters’ relationship. But I’ve heard that there is going to be a next volume, so I hope that we get to see more of their relationship and lives. The fact that the relationship was built on mutual respect and kindness with no unnecessary drama, miscommunication, or angst, made this book an extremely enjoyable read. And good art with realistic body proportions and setting added to the feel-goodness of the book. The efforts and attention to detail by the author are really commendable, which can especially be seen in the translation notes.

I adored both Chiba and Yaotome, though I’m a bit more partial towards Chiba. He was my favorite character. The characters were well-developed with distinct personalities, and I loved how their passion was highlighted in their careers. There aren’t many side characters, but the ones that were present were equally good. While the characters were well-developed, I couldn’t help but wish they had more emotional depth and that we could see their growth as their relationship progressed. But it doesn’t deter your reading experience in any form, so no worries there.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to people who want something lighthearted or a palate cleanser, which will leave them feeling good.

This was super cute and funny - although it is techiinically an ongoing series, this first volume can absolutely be read as a standalone and I would imagine it started out as one. It's actually pretty well paced for such a short book and was a more satisfying read than most similar stories have been.

The premise is fairly simple, Yaotome wants to learn how to drive and falls for his driving instructor Chiba. It's pretty straight forward, but I liked all the little elements that were added in such as Yaotome being a mangaka, both their backstories, some nerdy car things and at the very least some brief mention of cats (I really do wish they'd have been featured more though!). The art is pretty and both lead characters are likeable. It may not be anything groundbreaking and it probably won't deliver as much as a longer running series, but there's really nothing to complain about here.

The absolute only thing I could mention would perhaps be a matter of translation. I personally prefer when manga translations don't use Western titles e.g. the main characters are always referred to as Mr Chiba and Mr Yaotome. I feel it would be more approrpiate to either drop it altogether of to simply stick to Japanese titles, the majority of readers should be more than familiar enough with those.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

A sweet and well-drawn one-shot Boy’s Love manga about an introverted manga artist and his charismatic driving instructor. Despite their opposite personalities, the two slowly get to know each other through driving lessons and unexpected meetings outside class.

The story is light, easy to read, and emotionally tender without being explicit. It’s especially nice to see the introverted protagonist push past his fears to connect with someone so different from him. At times, the story flirts with uncomfortable territory (I did briefly wonder if it was turning into stalking), but overall, it’s a charming and soft romance with great pacing and art.

Recommended for those who enjoy gentle BL stories with emotional growth and quiet chemistry.

The pacing was a bit fast and there wasnt really anything super unique to the story or the romance to reeaalllyyy pull you in. But it was sweet and fun. Nicely lighthearted. I also really waited the art style.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for the arc!

I found this manga to be very sweet. I found it to be a very heartwarming and lighthearted story, something I was able to read on my way home in less than an hour. The art was one of my highlights; the characters were very cute (my favorite was the cat, of course), and the miscommunication wasn't that bad.

I agree with other reviews who mentioned that they felt the pace was too fast, and that this story could have benefited from being longer. Still, I quite enjoyed it.

Thanks to Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for the ARC.

I have to admit, I don’t recall requesting the ARC of this book, but when it came in, knowing nothing about it, I was hopeful.

Clearly, I was unaware of the plot behind this book, as I likely would have avoided this one out of moral objections with the concept. I have always found the concept of student-teacher relationships to be repulsive and impossible to draw romance from. Typically, there is a power dynamic and age discrepancy that would make consent unable to be given, on top of numerous other problems.

This book does avoid some of these pitfalls. The student and teacher seem to be about the same age, and the romance started before the student came to take the driving course with the teacher. But despite this, I still find true issue with romance coming through that dynamic.

If I was able to put aside the context of the romance, I would say that the manga’s art style is clean, if not a little bland. The writing is decent, but nothing incredible. And ultimately, the characters feel bland and rather two dimensional.

This is all to say that while the manga might be passable, nothing about it is unique or engaging enough, while the ultimate fault lies in the student/teacher romance. This trope glorifies the disregard of consent, glamorizes unethical relationships, and paints the role of education in a negative light.

This one Is going to my list of extremely cute feel-good romances to read for when I feel sad!

The art was pretty good and while it wasn't really out there it had a different enough vibe compared to a vast majority of BL's one tend to find out there (you know the type, one is a giant, the other Is super tiny, one is the manliest man to ever man, the other is the most femenine man in existence, the GIGANTIC hands, etc., etc.)

I especially enjoyed how real the characters felt. Their dialogue flowed in such a natural way that I actually felt for one second that the author had usted dialogue from their real life, just like in the manga (manga-ception? Lol) Yaotome motivations felt realistic despite being a bit out there and exagerated for the sake of creating romance, the pace of their relationships (as teacher-student, friends and later as lovers) was just right imo. Even "the third act break-up" was resolved in a very mature way that actually made me feel like they are grown-ass adults instead of "adults" with the personality of teenagers at best.

If I had to point one gripe it would be that, as much as I enjoyed the characters talking through the misunderstanding, It would have been nice to have a little bit more of tension or some kind of problem to wrap up the story in a slightly more satisfying way, but like I said, the manga exudes feel-good vibes, so I can't complain to much hahaha.

How stinking cute was this BL?! There were silly little comments that made me just burst out laughing. “What’s with the smirk?” 😏 Please. Hahahaha

I love that this is a one shot and that it feels like such a light airy book. It’s so cute. ☺️

I received this graphic novel as an eARC from Kodansha Comics through NetGalley and this review is based on my own opinion.

My Instructor Won't Yield is a fast paced, heart-warming romance about a student at a driving lessons school who has a secret crush on his instructor.
The drawings are beautifully done but keep in mind that you have to read this graphic novel from right to left.
It's a feel good story, perfect if you're in the mood for a light, romantic graphic novel.

This was very cute and even if short but it managed to tell a very adorable story. There was very little, maybe even nonexistent, angst. It is not explicit so people who don't enjoy smut will really like this one.

An incredibly sweet BL story between a driving instructor and his manga artist student.

Chiba is a driving instructor who's incredibly handsome and adored by many of his female students, but he always keeps a polite distance. That changes when manga artist Yaotome gets into the driver's seat. Over the course of his driving lessons, Yaotome and Chiba form a friendship that might just be something more.

I had a wonderful time reading this manga. The art is so lovely and soft, matching the tone of the story perfectly. The two main characters were so fun and complemented each other well. I especially loved the moments of vulnerability that they showed to each other, deepening their relationship.

I usually expect BL to have an element of spice, but this story was closed-door. It was a nice change of pace, and it didn't feel like anything was lost because of it. I loved how sweet and tender any scene of kissing or touching between the two leads was. They were executed perfectly by the artist.

a cute quick manga, especially for someone who has recently passed their driving test and can relate to the driving anxiety (although i did not have a connection with my instructor like this lmao).

I enjoyed this manga so much! I am an avid reader of BL manga, particularly oneshot stories, and this one stood out to me for both the pacing and the characters. The plot moved along but didn't feel as rushed as many oneshots do, and it didn't have any confusing time skips. Additionally, even though the plot followed predictable beats for the genre the characters felt very fleshed out and multi-dimensional. I liked both leads so much! Yaotome gets a sort of fake-out introduction as a cool, suave character but then is immediately shown much more dressed down and shy, which was really fun. Both characters get their moments to be confident and nervous and everything in between, and that's what made this story a standout for me!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for granting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really cute story with lovely characters, and I enjoyed the art style.
While the romance plot isn't particularly original and felt a bit predictable, the characters themselves were refreshingly distinct—which I loved.
