It was great and entertaining but I only learn about it being a spin-off after reading some review so I guess my lack of excitement is based on that

I believe mafia is just my buzz word, I had personally read 6 volumes into the regular series. I thought it was fun, but it was still a run of the mill shounen for me, though enjoyable. This, however, was everything I needed, gang rivalries, boss fights, and hilarity. I emensley enjoyed this wild ride of seeing Iruma become the most gentle and kind mob boss he could be. I really can't wait for vol. 2
Art: 9 out of 10 (very detailed and intricate and also very clean)
Story: 9 (same humor as the original, but with a bit more grit for the mafia vibe)
Characters: 8 (so many characters, I need to make a road map to keep them all straight. Luckily, there is a trio that seems to be the main hit with others floating around)
I would highly recommend this series and I hope you give it a try.

Rating: 4.5 (rounded up to 5)
This story takes Iruma and his friends out of the fantasy genre and into the genre of...well the Mafia.
The story follows similarly to the original - Iruma is a kind person who helps people and struggles to say no, and he is adopted by Sullivan to become his grandson. The difference here is that Sullivan is the boss of a crime family and begins to raise Iruma to take over the crime family.
That being said, this is not a dark and gritty Mafia story. This follows the original story's jokey tone and absurdity. Iruma is a crime boss who still wants to make people happy.
This was a really interesting story and it was cool to see how they changed up the story to fit the new genre while still keeping the characters themselves. You can clearly see all the characters are there - Kalego is still hating on Iruma but reluctantly helping him, Opera is still a badass who cares deeply about Iruma, and Sullivan is of course obsessed with Iruma and will give him anything he wants. The changes that have been made only push the Mafia theme more and really help to put you in the setting.
There are still some elements that were a little bit confusing (where I think they really wanted to push the crime-underworld and the demonworld comparisons) but nothing that took me out of the story.
This felt like such a random AU but strangely enough it really works and I'm excited to read more about this!

I love Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun already, so reading this spin off was a lot of fun. We follow Iruma-a five year old boy- who gets adopted by the don of the mafia. Iruma has a heart of gold, but how does that work when you are the heir to the mafia? This was a hilarious spinoff. Iruma is as loveable as he is in the original story and the supporting characters are great. I love Opera even more in this spin off as they were Iruma's older brother. I loved how protective they were with Iruma.

In the first volume, we meet Iruma Suzuki, a boy who’s had a rough life under the neglectful care of his parents. But everything changes when his parents sell him to a demon, sending him straight into the demon world. To his surprise, he ends up at a prestigious demon school, where he’s suddenly surrounded by creatures who are nothing like the humans he’s known.
The manga does a fantastic job of building a vibrant, fantastical world and introducing a colorful cast of quirky characters that really flesh out the story. Iruma is an immediately lovable protagonist—his kind-hearted nature and knack for getting into hilarious, often absurd situations make him easy to root for. Even when he’s completely out of his depth, he faces the chaos with a mix of humor, warmth, and just the right amount of luck.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for providing me with an eARC of this book.

Iruma is adopted as a grandson by a mafia don and becomes the heir to the entire syndicate, acquiring new companions and a goal to follow his dreams.
I'm not familiar with the original series but I can totally appreciate the creative desire to want to draw more characters in suits. Following this, I'll definitely pick up the next and the original series as well. Iruma is a refreshingly sweet protagionist with his aim of making sure that everyone has a full belly and sees the good in everyone. Devoted right hand person is one of my favourite things to see in a book and Opera is such a delight, grumpy and violent at first and dedicated to a fault afterwards, something which spills over to the other characters in Iruma's family. It's a really fun read!

So funny and a great adaptation from the original work! Need this to continue as an AU from the Demon School version.

"Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition 1" managed to surprise me and make me eager for all future volumes. As a spinoff to the successful and beloved "Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun," this "mafia edition" strips away enough of the supernatural/demonic world building to make the still-fantastical parallel world believable and recognizable to fans of the main series created by author Osamu Nishi.
The IruMafia Edition is helmed by author/artist Hiroja. The artwork is gorgeous and respectful of the source material. Yet Hiroja found a way to add new layers. Maybe it's the faithful representation of various characters, or those bespoke suits everyone wears, but I was immediately excited to visit an offshoot of the world I first learned through three seasons of the anime.
I loved the story's dark humor, splashes of cuteness, and overall fun vibe. The pacing was good. I never felt confused or like there was an inside joke I couldn't follow. Kudos to Hiroja for writing a spinoff that won't leave a reader scratching their head.
I need more of this world and these characters. I need more sharp suits and Don Sullivan's doting grandpa shenanigans. Just give me more, please!
Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha USA for the review copy!

I already loved the original series and the moment I learned that there was this mafia spinoff I wanted to read it! I'm so glad I got the chance to do it for free and I read it in a single sitting. First of all, the art is gorgeous and the action scenes peppered through the chapters really take advantage of the new artstyle with dramatic poses and crazy angles. Visually, it's stunning.
Plot wise it's also incredibly fun. I don't think it would hit the same with people who are not familiar with the original series, but if you are, it's fantastic. Iruma's characterization is on point and identical to the original series despite this being an AU. In this universe Iruma and Opera meet from the get go and grow up together 🥺 I love them so much.
This volume introduces Sullivan, Opera and Kalego. Clara and Alice are implied to be in the next volume which I will be sure to read.
A very fun read.
5 stars.

Already being a Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun manga fan, I wouldn’t pass up spending more time with these characters. This mafia spin-off did not disappoint.
The best part for me was Opera. In the original Opera is a reserved, refined and sensible character. In this version they are the complete opposite which brough me so much joy.
The artwork is so neat and detailed mirroring the image of a mafia family.
I need more of this, and Volume 2 has Alice debuting, so exciting!

I just loved seeing my beloved Iruma in a different and yet so similar world to the one the main story takes place in. Iruma still has a dotting grandpa (or should I say nono) and Opera is his loyal sidekick. Kalego is serving as always and I have to give points to the mangaka for that. His character is a bit different from what I am used to but I am not up to date with the original Manga, so maybe that's why. He is still getting tortured by Iruma, so I still got a few laughs from him. The drawing and the details were very on point and the story while is just getting started is already entertaining. I look forward to meeting Alice in this new world. He was teased by the end of this book and hopefully we will also see Clara on the second volume. I would definitely recommend the Manga to those who are already fans and since we are introduced to all the characters as if we are not familiar with them, I believe that new to the Iruma(verse fans will also greatly enjoy the book

This was enjoyable spin off of the Ituma series! It was quite hilarious to see my favorite characters playing the Mafia instead of demons! This was definitely a 5/5!

The first volume was amazing. The storyline is amazing because it does take some of concept from Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun. The art style is just beautiful. The detail is magnificent. Because everything is detailed throughout the story, especially the characters. The character designs. I love them so much. And for the story itself, I like the fact that it shows Iruma doing everything he can to make sure everybody has something in this world. And that he is willing to fight for it no matter what. And that he’s gonna have so many people that are gonna gravity to him, and standby side to help him complete his dreams. I cannot wait for the next volume to come out in English.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition 1 by Osamu Nishi was a true delight of a manga volume. As someone who is a big fan of the original series, I had high expectations for this mafia version of it, and it did not disappoint. All the same characters we know and love are here so far, just with a yakuza twist! It was funny and fresh and nostalgic all at once and I loved being back with these characters. Recommend whether old or new fans of this world.

A huge thank you to NetGalley, Kodansha Comics, and Osamu Nishi for providing me with an ARC of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition 1 in exchange for my honest review.
After saving Don Sullivan’s life, Iruma is adopted as the grandson of the head of the Babel Mafia. He goes from struggling in the slums to living in luxury, suddenly thrust into the underworld as part of the infamous Babel Mafia. At just 14, he becomes the family's underboss, and Edition 1 follows his journey as he begins to find his footing in this new, chaotic role.
This manga is an absolute blast, it is lighthearted, fast-paced, and packed with over-the-top characters and laugh-out-loud dialogue. I devoured it in one sitting. The artwork is just as entertaining, with expressive panels that perfectly capture the absurdity and charm of each scene.
Edition 1 mainly sets the stage and introduces the cast, but it does so with flair and energy. I’m genuinely excited to see how the story unfolds in future editions.

Welcome to demon school is one of my comfort animes, I was so excited when i saw this come up on the feed!!! I like that iruma didn't have to wait until he was 14 to experience love and the characters are just as cool as the original series!!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR CLARA!!!!!!

As a fan of Welcome to Demon School Iruma-Kun, this was a great spinoff! It was a creative take having Iruma being the new second in charge of the Babel Mafia family! He's to pure and sweet, meanwhile the rest of the family is dark and brooding. The humorous storyline is still there under all the violence and dreary tones of this storyline. Memorable characters such as Opera and Caligo are along side Iruma as his bodyguard and tutor as he tries to navigate his way into helping run the family with his grandpa.
Overall, it was a really interesting read with a darker tone than the original series. But it still had the charm that won me over when I read the Demon School series! I can't wait to read what happens next and see how the lovable characters that I've grown to love are transformed into mafia members!

". . .Y'know, I think that anybody can be a good person. All you need is a full belly to start." - Iruma
Iruma's too precious and sweet for this world! Somehow, he's managed to survive in the slums and still hold onto his goodness. When he helps a strange old man by tending to his wounds and giving him the last of his bread reserves, Iruma didn't expect anything to come of it. But Don Sullivan, the leader of the Babel Mafia, decided Iruma was to be his grandson!
At age five Iruma is caught up in the whirlwind that is Don Sullivan and the rest of the Babel Mafia. He even gains a gofer named Opera! How did this happen?! Will Iruma be able to hang onto his gentle nature or will it be swallowed up? And did someone say he was to be the next in line for head of the family at age fourteen?!!
First of all! I absolutely ADORE "Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun"! It's a comfort series I could watch on replay, and I could read the manga forever! So, when I saw this, I just had to snatch it up! I love that Nishi still had her hands on this project and approved of Hiroja's work. Nishi even illustrated Iruma and company with suits on! I definitely agree with Hiroja and his love for the cast in suits!
I will say I was a little nervous that things would play out similar to the original series but there's a lot of differences in this series. But my man Kalego still has that same view toward Iruma and I love it! I'm a big fan of Opera and Kalego so seeing the two in suits and more of the main characters made my heart burst! I was laughing a lot with all the chaotic antics going on and the Easter eggs that were presented.
"It takes more than a good heart to be a good boss." - Kalego
Kalego's Iruma's private tutor and though he's harsh, he still conveys things to Iruma. Who gets them but not in the way Kalego was expecting. One of the outcomes to Kalego's lesson had me laughing and excited to see a familiar design surrounding Kalego. Watching Opera and Kalego snipe at each other like a cat and a dog was fantastic. Also, when Kalego was introduced the panel designs were so hot. I may have kept back tracking to really look at my man. . .
There's no language because it is "bleeped" out. We do have violence and bloodshed but nothing too crazy or gory. Opera and Kalego are intense forces to reckon with. They will never say it out loud but the two together in a fight are perfect. The competition and quips at one another only help to increase their danger.
I was utterly dying seeing all the characters in suits! It took me longer to read because I just had to keep flipping back to admire the artwork. Hiroja did a phenomenal job at bringing the old and known characters' back to life with his twists. This spin-off is amazing, and I want to continue reading! The cliffhanger has me hooked even more because Alice Asmodeus is about to enter the chat!!
Enjoy the new take on Iruma-kun and company as all of them don amazing suits and take on the underworld in odd ways that has Kalego needing to remain in bed to process things. Don't forget to give the author some stars!
Thank you, NetGalley and Kodansha Comics!

Before we begin this review, I would like to warn the reader, I have not read Osamu Nishi’s Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun manga, nor have I watched the anime series. So, this will be a review done by someone familiar with the series, but as someone new to the Iruma-kun series.
The lovable Iruma-kun cast is back in an all-new spin-off story! Iruma is dirt poor, but a disgustingly cheery young boy growing up in a city slum. One day, Iruma gives the last of his food to an injured old man, and nurses the stranger back to health, only to find out that the elder gent is none other than Don Sullivan, head of the Babyl Mafia! Sullivan comes back and whisks young Iruma away, and begs the boy to become his grandson. And just like that, Iruma begins his new life as the next in line to lead a gigantic gang of demonic mafiosos in, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, IruMafia Edition!
In this new story, we’re trading the Demon world for a Mafia world, but it keeps the charm that keeps fans coming back for more. The groundwork in terms of the main cast and premise from the original series was built by Osamu Nishi is honored by Hiroja, the manga creator overseeing the script and artwork for this title but does contain more violence, Demon talk (again, no actual demons), and how twisted the Underworld can get. IruMafia Edition’s first volume does find a way to attract new readers by keeping the story at a good pace, but also building momentum for future volumes.
What I have enjoyed about this book is how well Hiroja has written and illustrated how dark and twisted the Underworld could be. In a sense, it shares various similarities to the Demon World when you get down to how it could the power and corruption can entice a person, how much power money, and influence are wielded in this new mafia world. But Iruma is still the same, even as an underboss, and still keeps that positive attitude that he is known for, as for the other characters, Opera was one of the characters that stood out at the beginning, who comes to care for Iruma differently than in the original manga. Sullivan is a lovable character, and Kalego is vastly different than his original counterpart.
Finally, the artwork in this manga is spectacular. Hiroja captured the emotional tones of each character perfectly, even down to their character designs and their suits (Iruma’s outfit is my favorite!) Aside from the action, and comedy, it has good morals and a heartwarming setting, despite being set in a criminal-themed world. I close this review out to say as someone only familiar with the franchise through clips and promotional material for the TV anime, I am impressed by this spin-off title and recommend it for new manga readers and fans of the Iruma-kun series. I look forward to reading the next volume.

Thank you Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. An interesting story premise, characters, and non-stop action. Great start to the series. I’m interested to see what happens next.
