Clio Barnes is a fashion influencer living in New York. She lives a glamorous life of networking and events but one aspect of her world is far less glitzy -
she grew up in a house supposedly inhabited by a demon. So when Clio’s estranged Mum dies and leaves this property to her and her sisters, they’re forced to confront the past they’ve all tried so desperately hard to leave behind.
Play Nice is marketed as a haunted house horror but in my opinion, possession is its own beast and definitely wasn’t the star of the show. This is ultimately a story of dysfunctional families and generational trauma with just a pinch of the supernatural.
It’s not elevated horror like Jackson’s Hill House but it’s creepy, it’s fun, and it keeps you from putting it down. This is my first read of Harrison’s and I’ll definitely be looking into her backlist.
I think people will enjoy this if they appreciate the following:
- mixed media narratives
- first person povs
- complicated and prickly narrators
- haunted house/demonic possession vs madness
- dysfunctional families
- books similar to Home Before Dark and How to Sell a Haunted House
Kind thanks to NetGalley and Titan Books for allowing me to read this advanced copy in exchange for my thoughts!

One of my new favourites from this author, I loved the relationship between the sisters and the aspect of the influencer lifestyle. A really fast paced, quick read overall 4 stars.
